Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Netball

Thank you to Ms Langusch and Ms Dovaston for their commitment in preparing the LIS netball teams in the lead up to the inter-school netball carnival with OLSH International School this weekend. Thanks also to Ms Savitas who has assisted with preparations for accommodation and food. We look forward to a great weekend of netball ahead. Please see the schedule further in the Toksave.

Walking to and from School in Townsite

Parents and carers, please ensure young children are accompanied by an adult walking to and from school. We have had instances where young children have been running ahead and running across the road without looking. Our children’s safety is of the utmost importance.

School Council Meeting

There will be a School Council meeting for members of the School Council on Thursday, 8th August, at 6.00pm.

Screen Time

Many parents are concerned about the amount of screen time their children have children have on various devices. Recent studies have outlined several detrimental effects that too much screen time can have on children and adolescents.  The Australian Institute for Family Studies screen time guidelines recommend:

  • no screen time for children younger than two years.
  • no more than one hour per day for children aged 2-5 years.
  • no more than two hours of sedentary recreational screen time per day for children and young people aged 5-17 years (not including schoolwork).

The links below in the Toksave have more information on the guidelines and the effects of too much screen time.

Term 3 Calendar

Please find the Term 3 Parent Calendar attached below.

If you have any concerns or would like further information on any of the topics in this newsletter, please do not hesitate to make contact with any questions.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

The Batch 3 Work Ready Trainees are in their second week of their eight-week training program. They have already adapted to the new environment at STM and are getting into the routines of the program. PPEs have been issued last week and all Trainees are attending the trainings in full PPE.

All 18 Trainees have successfully completed the Trupla Site Induction program at Camp 2 on Wednesday this week.

A good number of former Work Ready trainees came to STM this week to apply for entry level positions at Newmont. STMC Staff have assisted them to apply for various vacant positions as advertised. We will publish the statistics of how many former Work Ready trainees got jobs in our quarterly reports.

In the next couple of weeks, we will have several guest speakers scheduled to come and talk to the Trainees. We will also have a Mine and Process Plant 'Tour and Talk' coming up midway through the program.

Kind regards,

Mr. David Wengip
