Principal's Report

Hi all,

I hope everyone got to enjoy the long weekend, surviving the very hot weather, and taking time to relax and recharge!

Tomorrow is the beginning of this year’s NAPLAN testing period. Students in grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 all across the country will be sitting the four NAPLAN tests on various days over the next two weeks. These tests will be conducted online as well as on paper (grade 3 Writing test) and look to measure students’ growth over their school lives. Grade 3 and 5 students will be sitting the Writing test tomorrow, the Reading test on Thursday and the Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests next week. If your child is in grade 3 or 5 and will be absent at any stage across the next two weeks, could you please let their teacher know so that we can accommodate catch up tests.

We are excited to be hosting our first Working Bee of the year this coming Friday, the 15th of March. Our working bee late last year was such a success that we have followed the formula and will be holding it after school from 3:30 to 5:00pm. FOS are kindly providing a BBQ for all of the hard workers! A board has been set up with photographs of the jobs that are to be completed; please feel free to come and put your name to a job in preparation for the day. If you are unable to be here on Friday, you are still able to put your name down for a job and complete it at another time that is more suitable for you.

Our grade 3-6 students will be competing in this year’s MMPS Cross Country Trials next Monday. They will be heading down to Dixon Field in Gisborne to test out their long distant running skills in preparation for the District Cross Country competition being held later in the year. Good luck to all of our runners! If you are able to help out on the day (9:30 – 11:30pm) that would be amazing as we need a minimum of 6 helpers to be help supervise along the course.

We have been made aware that a few cases of impetigo (school sores) have risen in the school community. Parents and carers are advised that students should remain home until appropriate treatment has been commenced and that sores that are on exposed surfaces must be covered with a water-tight dressing.

It has certainly already been a very busy term and it will continue to be all the way up until Easter, if you have any questions at all about events coming up or would just like to touch base regarding something, please do not hesitate to come and see me.

Joe.

House Athletics Carnival

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend. I just want to start with how amazing I felt after last Thursday from our House Athletics Carnival. I was extremely proud of how all students behaved and competed on the day. Everyone I saw compete gave it their all and never gave up, but also the encouragement the students gave each other was phenomenal! The enthusiasm that engulfed Dixon Field was contagious and it gave me so much joy to watch. It goes without saying that these amazing school days, where beautiful memories are created, can’t go ahead without the fantastic team behind me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the teachers and support staff that assisted not only on the day but leading up to the event. To the beautiful parents who helped on the day. Whether you were a measuring extraordinaire, a fabulous timer, raking enthusiasts or a fantastic helper with the foundation- 2, your efforts and time do not go unnoticed and I am so appreciative of our school community. Again, A MASSIVE THANK YOU! The students also looked fantastic with their coloured hair and painted faces, thank you to Schools Out for helping on the day. It has been a busy term at MMPS for sport and we aren’t finished yet! Next week, Monday 18th of March, grades 3 to 6 will be participating in the schools Cross Country trials. They will run a course of either 2km or 3km depending on their age and the first 10 students to cross the line first in each race will be selected to participate in the District Cross Country in term 2. Parents, I am sorry but I will need your assistance again with this one. We require the assistance of a minimum of 6 parents to help supervise the checkpoints during the run.  If you are able to assist on the day, please contact either myself or Joe at the school.

Have a great week!

This week in DigiTech

Today in Foundation, it was time to make some noise! music, and as I am not that motivated to bring around an orchestra of instruments, we used Garageband on the iPad to create our own symphonies.

We learnt Keyboards, Stings, Drums (I apologies in advance for that one) and more.

We then spent some time learning about loops and how we can layer these to make some really interesting music.

Click on the link below to hear it all (and see some wicked dancing and just the right amount of head banging)

Working Bee - Friday 15th March

Donations for Fiji - Let's Make a Difference!

Following the success of our, 'Turning Unwanted Stationery into a Gift,' donations at the end of 2023, we are again aligning with the principles of the International Baccalaureate and continuing our commitment to sustainability with an exciting opportunity for those of you planning holiday getaways during the upcoming break.

Travel Donation Opportunity

Thanks to the efforts of Prue Dawson, retired teacher and local resident, who was deeply touched by the generosity of our community, Prue and her family are heading to Bali over the holidays and hope to take some  of our donated items directly to an orphanage during her trip.

If any of you are planning a holiday to Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, Fiji, or anywhere else in Asia, and are willing to take a small suitcase filled with donated items, speak with Amy at the school office to coordinate with Prue and for further details.

Items Needed

  • Stationery Items: Just like before, any extra stationery items, Notebooks, pens, pencils, and other school supplies.
  • Children's Novels & Board Games
  • Linen, Clothing & Shoes: As we gather donations, consider contributing gently used or new linens, clothing, and shoes. Your generosity will provide comfort and warmth to those who need it most.
  • Special Request for Women and Young Girls: The women and young girls of Fiji have specific needs. We are collecting bras, bathers, and crop tops to provide essential items that can make a significant difference in their daily lives.

Why This Matters

  • Your donated items will have a direct and immediate impact on the lives of those in need. Whether it's stationery, books, clothing, or shoes, your contributions will make a difference.

  • Global Reach: By extending our support beyond borders, we are embodying the spirit of global citizenship and reinforcing the importance of helping others, no matter where they are in the world.

Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. Thank you for your continued support.
