Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 6 Newsletter - Friday 22 November 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

K-6 Picnic @ Parsley Bay

I am excited to announce that this year’s end-of-year celebration will be a whole-school excursion to Parsley Bay on Monday 16th December. The park is open to the public and families are welcome to join us for this special day. There will be an opportunity for supervised water play and we are all hoping for great weather to make the most of this fun, outdoor experience as we celebrate another year of learning and laughter together. Permission notes, along with further information, will be shared with parents next week.

Thank you to our P&C

Tuesday marked the final P&C meeting for the year and I want to take this opportunity to thank our P&C for a positive and productive year working together, my first as Principal of Drummoyne. It has been an absolute pleasure collaborating with such a dedicated and enthusiastic group of parents and carers who are committed to enriching our school community.

This year, the P&C has gone above and beyond in organising a range of events that have brought joy to our students and families. From the recent disco to trivia nights, Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations and, of course, our amazing fete, each event has created lasting memories and strengthened our community spirit and benefited all of our students. I’m so grateful for the effort and time our P&C has given to making these events possible and for their support in ensuring our students benefit from the resources and opportunities these initiatives provide.

As we look ahead to 2025, I encourage everyone in our school community to consider being part of the P&C. Whether you can volunteer at an event or attend meetings, your involvement makes a real difference. It’s also a great way to learn a bit more about what’s happening at school from me,  meet other families, contribute ideas  and have a say in activities and projects that benefit all of our students.

Induction Assembly for 2025 Yr6 Leaders

I am looking forward to the 2025 Leaders Induction Assembly on Tuesday. This is a special event where we will celebrate and officially welcome our new student leaders for the year ahead. It’s always a proud moment for both our Year 5 students and their families as they step into these important roles within our school community. I hope to see many proud parents there to share in this celebration of our students' achievements and leadership potential. Please note the early start time of 2pm - Tuesday 26th November.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Sun Safety

We experience some of the highest UV levels in the world, so if we want our children to have a healthy future, we need to equip them with good sun protection habits now. School hours are at the time of day when UV levels are at their highest. It’s vital that we educate our children and ourselves about good sun protection behaviours.

You can protect your child from the damaging effects of UV radiation by applying sunscreen each morning before they leave for school and ensuring they are wearing a sun-safe hat. This is one of the easiest and most effective forms of sun protection. If students forget their hat, they are asked to play in the shade.

Labelling hats is also an excellent way to ensure if your child's hat is lost or misplaced, it can be returned.

Class of the Week - 1/2K

Class 1/2K have been focusing on 'People and Places' this semester. They explored the meaning of a suburb and came to understand how a suburb is planned and developed including the naming of features and places. 1/2K investigated the meaning of place names in the local area and planned out a suburb of their own.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Primary School Sustainability Expo

On Thursday, the 21st of November, Ms O’Dowd took the Year 6 Environmental Leaders on an excursion to the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability at Balls Head Point, Waverton. We were accompanied by students from 9 other primary schools, and the sessions were run by Environmental Leaders from 9 different high schools.

Over the day, we participated in a number of fun and sustainable activities. The first activity was called; Trash to Tunes where we crafted maracas by repurposing items found at home which included: 2 cups, stones, straws, pipe cleaners, balloons, tape and paper. This activity was also a competition and Phoebe was chosen as the winner because of the speech about her environmentally inspired maracas.

Our second activity was called Pots to Go which was planting basil seeds. First we each made a pot out of old newspapers and biodegradable tape, made of a cellulose film and a plant based adhesive. We then filled the pots with soil and finally one of the students from Marsden High School popped in the basil seeds. Fingers crossed that they all grow when we get them home.

The third activity was called the Sustainability Trail and Games where Holly took us on a journey around the Old Coal Loader site where we played Sustainability I Spy. Our task was to find examples of how the Centre was dealing with waste, encouraging biodiversity, reducing water and conserving energy. We got some great ideas to tell our parents about such as: reusing old things, composting in a worm farm and planting native plants to name just a few. Then we used a huge parachute to play a quick quiz game.

At the end of the day, we competed in the Garbage Olympics, which consisted of trivia, pictionary, and an environmental action game. We were encouraged by our High school leaders over the day to do our best while thinking about sustainability and our environment.

Everyone had a fun time, and this was such a memorable and thrilling experience.

Thank you to Riviera's mum, Donna and Phillipa’s mum, Lauren for driving us there and picking us up and a big thank you to Ms O'Dowd for organising this whole excursion! We had such a great time!

3/4S Are World Champion Mathematicians!

Last week, 3/4S set an ambitious goal to become Mathletics champions of the world! With the help of Miss Lucy and Mrs Sole, we aimed to achieve the highest average score globally and reach number 1 on the leaderboard. Miss Lucy researched how to maximise points and explained that it wasn’t just about individual efforts - it was the class average that mattered. Everyone put in their best efforts, starting early in the morning and working hard after school, completing activities and tests, and earning thousands of points.

Our determination and teamwork paid off as we soared past other schools, achieving the highest average score not only in Australia but in the world!

Along the way, some of us earned impressive individual rankings. Jana, Georges, Ayden, and Luis climbed the leaderboard, with some of us making it into the world’s top 20 and even the country’s top 10. Georges even spotted the name of a former classmate from Qatar on the leaderboard! The challenge was tough, and we tackled some of the hardest tests, but our resilience and enthusiasm were unmatched.

Congratulations to everyone in 3/4S - we are now true world champions!

Transition to Kindergarten 2025 - Thank you!

We have been excited to welcome our new 2025 Kindergarten families to school over the past three weeks. Our new students have had the opportunity to meet teachers and hopefully start to feel a sense of belonging at Drummoyne PS. We would like to thank the families and volunteers who generously gave their time to attend and present at our information sessions.

The kindergarten team would like to say a particularly big thank you to the Year 6 Prefects and House Captains. These exceptional students demonstrated outstanding leadership and teamwork in helping to welcome new families and settle students into classrooms. Their kindness, courtesy and initiative was noticed by both families and staff. The Year 6 cohort have consistently demonstrated these skills throughout the year and should feel proud of the positive impact they have on their younger peers.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Peer Support

Over the next 2 weeks, students will be reconnecting with their peer support group as a way to say goodbye to 2024 and discuss the upcoming change in anticipation of the 2025 school year.

There are many transition points in children’s lives. These include starting school, moving from Primary to Secondary school, changes in friendship groups or family circumstances and moving between distance learning and in-school learning. Such processes can involve uncertainty and instability, and they can also be powerful opportunities for learning and growth.

We’re currently using some resources from Peer Support Australia to help guide students through this transition time by reconnecting with their peers and developing understanding and skills in responding positively to change. Research has identified key skills and protective factors that are particularly valuable in times of transition to help lessen the potential negative impact of such experiences. These include positive relationships, self-awareness, effective social and self-management skills and the ability to practice helpful coping skills.

You can support this learning at home by helping your child to describe their experiences and the feelings that they have during transitions. They can cope with change by knowing their strengths and how to use them through strategies such as talking with others, thinking positively and persevering.
