A message from Clare

Good afternoon Families and Friends,

It is so wonderful feeling the positivity, the energy and the joy around this place. Even with the changing weather, our spirits are high as we embark on our learning. It was a very special school assembly in Week 2 when six young people of our school community received their SRC Badges. Congratulations to our SRC representatives for Semester One:

        • Samantha
        • William
        • Tilly
        • Madelyn
        • Evie
        • Hugo

We’re very proud of you. They took on a pledge and are very eager to make their contribution to making St Luke’s the very best school it can be:

Pledge: God, the source of every good gift,
You have called us together as servants to do Your will.
Grant us the light of Your Spirit
To guide us in our responsibilities as the SRC.
May we work together in harmony for the common good.
May we listen to one another in a spirit of genuine respect.
May we encourage one another’s unique talents.
May we approach our decision making
With careful thought.
May we respond effectively to the needs of
others in our school.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

On the topic of Leadership… Our Year 5 children are back out in the community making lovely connections with our local kinders and early learning centres. This week they visited Aurora and buddied up with some kindy kids. We have much to learn from these younger humans and our children love the connections they are making.

Last week, the Year 6 leaders attended the Box Hill RSL ANZAC service at the Box Hill Gardens. It was a moving experience and the children watched with curiosity and wonder at the pomp and ceremony of such ceremonies. Our two School Captains, Chloe and Noah, laid a wreath at the cenotaph. This will become an annual occasion, alternating between representing St Luke’s at the Dawn Service one year and the RSL ANZAC Service for schools every other year.

Website Photos- What can l say but WOW, WET and WILD! The weather was wild but we pushed through it. There were lots of candid shots in the yard at recess and lunchtime. Some children were asked to speak about St Luke’s and they spoke beautifully and are a credit to YOU, their family and to our school. Mark returned this week to do the drone and take a few more outdoor shots. Families will be informed if their child has been selected as a possible inclusion on the website.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:

Julianne Kelly, as our Literacy Leader, has been unpacking UFLI- a research based phonics approach from the University of Florida. The Junior classes will be taking this on board too as the term progresses. As MACS delivers professional learning for schools across the Archdiocese that builds teacher capacity and efficacy around the Science of Learning, our teachers are learning about what resources will support them most efficiently. Our Prep to Year 2 team has introduced TIMS- Teaching for Impact in Maths Series. It follows a direct instruction approach and is research based.

On Tuesday afternoon, St Thomas’, Blackburn joined us for an incredibly stimulating presentation from Shane Pearson who is a speech pathologist. As a therapist in a primary school, he has developed an approach to word reading and spelling called PhOrMeS. This delves into Phonology (sound), Orthography (writing), Morphology (studying the form of words) Etymology (origin and evolution of words) and semantics (meaning of language). It will complement the UFLI program in P-Yr 2 and be a perfect segway for our budding writers from Yr 3-6. Shane will return to work with teachers in the Middle and Senior school classes later this term.

Mother’s Day Breakfast: is ready to go. Invites have gone out, a menu is being formed and all we need are the Mums, their kids and any other special women to join us. Make sure you RSVP with how many are coming from your family… Mum plus children and grandma or special female to schooloffice@slblackburnsth.catholic.edu.au

We also have a Mother's Day stall that will begin at 1 pm on the same day. Thank you to the dads who have volunteered to man the stall. WE still need 3-4 more Dads to volunteer please. Contact me directly at: principal@slblackburnsth.catholic.edu.au if you can volunteer for a couple of hours.

The SACRAMENTS are gaining momentum with a Commitment Mass offered two weekends ago. All candidates and their families were encouraged to attend. Confirmation will occur on Friday 17th May at 6 pm. I would like to thank Nina Grieve and the Senior School teachers- Emily Chlebica, Kathryn Fitt and Rosa Phillips for their wonderful support of our Confirmation candidates. We have a Confirmation Workshop evening this Tuesday, 7th May in the Discovery Centre starting at 7pm sharp, for all Confirmation candidates and their parents. Fr Tony Kerin from St Francis Xavier, Box Hill will visit the children the week before he confirms the children.

That’s it from me. Have a wonderful weekend and see you next week.

Middles Science Incursion

Chemistry Chaos!

Last week the 3/4 classes had a science incursion called “Chemistry Chaos’.  We did lots of different science experiments. One we really loved was a funny popping experiment.

If you would like to do it at home, follow the steps below - make sure you find a safe spot, like outside, as there might be mess and flying corks!

  1. Find a bottle with a cork.
  2. Put some water in the bottle.
  3. Drop in an alka seltzer tablet
  4. Quickly put on the cork.
  5. Stand away from the bottle.
  6. Watch what happens!

We had a fun afternoon being scientists! By Charlie and Clem

Hannah - I liked doing science experiments and learning that there are physical changes and chemical changes. Like when you mix vinegar and baking soda it makes carbon dioxide.

Isobel - I found it interesting watching the physical and chemical changes in each experiment. When we added water to the nappy it absorbed the water and grew!

Alessandro - I liked it when we used pipettes to put water into little plastic bags. The teacher came around=d and added orbeez to the water. We waited and watched them get bigger as they absorbed the water.

Ava - During the incursion we learned that you cannot reverse a chemical change but you can reverse a physical change.

Daniel - It was fun and exciting when I learned about chemistry. I loved it when the test tube lid popped off when you put the aspirin into it.

Florence - I liked to watch the changes when we added cabbage water to the vinegar and water.

Highbury District Cross Country - Friday 10th May.

Two weeks ago we held our cross country trials at St Luke’s and a team has been selected to compete against other schools in our district.

The District cross country competition is fast approaching and  will be held at Mirrabooka Reserve 80-140 Holland Rd, Blackburn South. The competition begins at 9.30am and will run to about 12.30pm.

We welcome parents to come along and watch and support our students. A reminder that we  need permission forms of selected students to be signed in Operoo. If you are available in the morning as a volunteer, your support will be greatly appreciated. Please indicate your availability on the Operoo form and I will then send you more information next week.

The students have been doing a few runs at school as preparation and I would encourage them to do some more running over the next week leading up to the event. Take a rest on Thursday and get a good night’s sleep before the run.

We wish all our representatives all the best.

Highbury District Basketball Competition - Friday 14th June 9:30am-1:30pm at Nunawading basketball stadium.

In a few weeks time, the 5/6 students will begin training for the upcoming basketball event to be held at the Nunawading stadium on Burwood Road. We have quite a few students who play competition basketball so we should have some fairly strong teams. Team selection will be made by the senior teachers and myself. Later in the year, the year 3/4 students will be participating in the Hooptime Basketball competition. More information on this later this term.

I look forward to seeing our students in action on the courts as we have some very talented players.

LOST PROPERTY:

Please check the lost property cupboard in the office foyer if you are missing uniform or food containers.

Term 2 and 3 WINTER UNIFORMS:

Winter uniform -  As the months get cooler, please make sure your child has his/her school jumper EVERY day. Rain jackets should not be worn in place of a school jumper and are for outside use only.

CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER THE BELL OR LEAVING EARLY:

As part of our wellbeing care of children at St Luke's, every class engages in a morning routine at 8.50 am.  This quiet, calm time allows children to gather together in a circle, to greet each other by name, to pray and/or enter into some Christian meditation and get ready for the day.  Please make sure you allow enough time to get your child to school BEFORE 8.50 am.

If children arrive after the gate and student entry doors are locked, parents/carers are required to walk their child/ren to the school office and sign them in on the VPass iPad.

If leaving early (before the end of the day), parents/carers are required to sign their child/ren out on the VPASS iPad.

FOOD ALLERGIES:

Allergic reactions to food… can be harmful to our children. For that reason we ask parents to think carefully about what they are packing in their child’s lunch boxes. Occasionally, something might slip through and once aware, we take precautions to ensure the safety of every child. As stated in the Family Handbook 2024:

We are an EGG and NUT free school due to the allergies of children within our community.  We ask that parents respect this request and the potential harm this could do to children if brought to school.

Thank you for your care and attention to this.

Join the St Luke's Primary School Blackburn South Buy/Sell Uniform group on Facebook to buy/sell uniform with other parents.
