Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 11 Newsletter - Friday 11 April 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Reflections on Term 1

As we come to the end of Term 1, I am pleased to report that it has been a very positive start to the year. Despite some late changes of plan and adjustments to the way we’ve done things in previous years, the term has been remarkably settled. As I walk around the school, I continue to be impressed by the calm, purposeful atmosphere and the strong focus on teaching and learning in every classroom. A huge thank you goes to you, our parent community, for the incredible support you’ve shown – not just to the school, but to your children as they’ve navigated the transition into new classes, new routines and, for many, new friendships. The start of the school year can be a big adjustment and your partnership makes a real difference in helping students feel secure, confident and ready to learn.

ANZAC Day Commemorations

ANZAC Day is a significant occasion for all Australians, and an important opportunity for young people to learn about and reflect on the values of courage, sacrifice and service. At Drummoyne Public School, we believe it’s essential that our students understand the meaning behind this national day of remembrance and acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who served.

This year, our school will be represented at several events: the Five Dock RSL Commemoration and March on Sunday 27 April, the City of Canada Bay Council Dawn Service at Queen Elizabeth Park on Thursday 25 April and our school ANZAC assembly on Wednesday 30 April. We hope many of our families will be able to join us and help us to model the importance of honouring and remembering those who have served their country.

Easter Hat Parade

Our Easter Hat Parade was a great success, with lots of colour, creativity and smiles on display. It was wonderful to see so many families and local preschools joining us to celebrate – thank you to those of you who were able to attend for being part of such a joyful community event.

As we head into the break, I’d like to wish all our families who are currently observing Lent and those who will celebrate Easter a meaningful and joyous celebration. I hope everyone enjoys a restful and relaxing break and I look forward to welcoming students back to school on Wednesday 30 April.

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Greek Easter biscuits

This week at Drummoyne, Greek Language students enjoyed making Greek Easter biscuits called Kουλουράκια. (Koulourakia)

Kουλουράκια (Koulourakia) are butter-based biscuits and come in certain traditional shapes, including a braid, a figure eight, s-shaped 'snake' with two swirls at either end. Koulourakia are traditionally made at Easter time. Families bake them at home during Holy Week and offer some to their friends and families as gifts.

If you decide to make some Koulourakia for Easter, they are best enjoyed with morning coffee or a hot chocolate. Dunking is encouraged!

We wish all families a Happy Easter/Καλό Πάσχα/Buona Pasqua

Debating Report - Term 1 Week 11

This week our two teams debated each other in a practice round, with several students debating for the first time. The topic was, ‘Too much money is spent on space exploration’

The affirmative team, the Frasers, argued that the money could be much better spent if it was put towards global issues such as poverty, terrorism and mental health. They also pointed out that the high failure risk of space missions and negative environmental impacts needed to be considered. Their team line was ‘Waste not, want not!’. Well done Elizabeth 1st speaker, Delilah 2nd speaker, Isaac 3rd speaker and Ashton, team advisor! The Frasers narrowly lost the debate despite putting up a good fight.

The Abbotts were the negative team. They argued that space programs have led to many scientific and technological advances that continue to improve life on Earth. They also pointed out that exploring space could lead to new resources, colonisation opportunities and solutions to Earth’s problems. Their team line was ‘Every dollar spent on space exploration is a dollar well spent!’ Congratulations to 1st speaker Ella, 2nd speaker Maeve, 3rd speaker David and team advisor Hamilton on winning their debate.

Thank you to our chairperson Claire and timekeepers Grace and Aliya, as well as Ms Cantlay who adjudicated.

Violin and Viola Lessons Coming to DPS in Term 2!

We’re thrilled to announce that professional 1:1 violin and viola lessons will be available at Drummoyne Public School from Term 2! A highly experienced tutor from the Inner West Institute of Music will be offering 30-minute lessons on Wednesday afternoons after school.

If your child is interested in learning a string instrument, or you’d simply like to find out more, come along to our Discovery Session in Term 2, Week 2 – Wednesday 7 May, from 8:30–9:30am. The Director of the Inner West Institute of Music, Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich, will be available to answer all your questions. This session will cover everything from lesson costs to how to source and properly fit a violin.

We’re excited to grow our vibrant string program, building on the success of our current string ensemble, which will make its debut performance at the Sydney Opera House in September this year!

For more details or to register your interest in the Discovery Session, please contact Ms Sole  - suzanne.sole@det.nsw.edu.au

ALL THINGS SPORTY

Rugby League PSSA Gala Day

On Monday Ashton and I were selected to play PSSA rugby league at a hugely successful gala day. The Gala Day was held at Cronulla high school where all of the different zones of NSW played against each other in two different pools. Our PSSA team won our first game, lost our second game, and lost our last game in the semi-finals.

Although we might not have won the competition, we still won mentally and we had loads of fun all day. Ashton and I had a really enjoyable time and will remember the fun that we had with our fellow team members.

OFFICE NEWS

Important information if your child travels to school by bus?

From 24 February to 21 March 2025 Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services. It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important? The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
