TERM 1 WEEK 11 -8 APRIL 2024

Principal

Our term is finishing with many wonderful sporting opportunities for students. Students have enjoyed Rugby League, League Tag and Cricket carnivals. Stage 2 and Stage 3 as well as Support Class swimming will conclude this Friday with the final lesson being held at Moruya Pool. Our School Cross Country Carnival will be held tomorrow and we look forward to welcoming parents and friends to this event. Our Cross Country Carnival will be held at school with the event beginning at 11:40am. We hope to see you there.

As we finish our first term of learning for the year I would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday break. Teachers return to school on Monday 29 April and will participate in professional learning focused on curriculum implementation. All students return on Tuesday 30 April. As we head into the winter months please label all jumpers and belongings as these are often lost. As we transition to our new school uniform the new option of black pants as well as the previous grey pants will be accepted. Black pants are available for purchase at the uniform shop however any long black pants will be accepted provided they are free from logos and brand names.

Next term Tracy Scobie will be relieving in the position of Principal at Narooma High School. We wish Tracy all the best for next term. Next term we will also be advertising to fill the position of Stage 3 Assistant Principal. I will keep you updated with further information as it becomes available.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again next term.

Deputy Principal

I write this as Daylight Saving comes to an end for another year and with it the adjustment from waking to dark mornings, to coming home as the sun sets.  It is a reminder that whilst change is constant, we are all capable of adapting.  Schools are dynamic places and I continually see evidence of our ‘adaptability’ in classrooms across the school.  When it comes to our young people, developing the life skills of resilience, flexibility and adaptability are as important as the content of our traditional curriculum.

Term One has been big with so many highlights.  For me these have included:

  • Commencement of dhurga community lessons – such an enthusiastic group of adult learners’ role modelling lifelong learning.
  • Easter Hat Parade in our refurbished Lilli Pilli area - some of those hats were unbelievable, as was the engagement in the event from our school community.
  • Diversity of sporting opportunities for our students from swimming, to AFL, cricket, League Tag and softball.  A huge shout out to our co-ordinating staff, in particular Mrs Finney for her endless organisation of these events.

I am grateful to be part of this school community. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday.

Tracy Scobie

Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2025

Applications for Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2025 open 4 April and close 20 May 2024. You and your school play a crucial role in the process, so please let your school community know about opportunity classes and the application window.

Opportunity classes are an important way for us to support high-potential and gifted students. It's important we let parents and carers know they need to apply for Year 5 opportunity class placement while their children are in Year 4. The tests will be held in designated government high school test centres or other facilities. For more information on what to share with parents and carers, refer to Information and actions for principals of primary schools (PDF 279 KB).

Key dates
  • Thursday 4 April to Monday 20 May 2024 – Applications open for Year 5 entry to opportunity classes in 2025. The application link will be published via Application process on 4 April.
  • Wednesday 22 May to Friday 7 June 2024 – After applications close, principals with students with specific reasonable adjustments will be asked to provide additional information about applicants online via the Selective High School and Opportunity class schools system (SHS and OC schools’ site). School assessment scores are not required.
  • Thursday 1 August 2024 – Candidates sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test.
Resources to help youPlease note: If you suspect that parents and carers are withdrawing their children from school to prepare for the Opportunity Class Placement Test, draw their attention to the School Attendance Policy.

The Information for applicants – procedures and guidelines for placement in opportunity classes in Year 5 in 2025 (PDF 347 KB) also points out that selection committees will not look favourably upon candidates with excess unexplained absences.

For updates and general information about the placement process, refer to Opportunity classes (Year 5–6).

If you have any questions, please contact the Selective Education Unit through the SHS and OC schools’ site messaging feature or email ssu@det.nsw.edu.au.

Your support with the smooth administration of the opportunity class placement process is greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Martin GrahamDeputy Secretary, TLSW

Year 4 Botanic Gardens Excursion - Last week Year 4 were invited to the Eurobodalla Botanical Gardens to explore the flora and fauna. Our Year was split into groups and the students were eager to learn about the importance of plants to humans and the food chain. We had hands on experience in identifying the parts of a plant and were able to look closely at those parts under strong magnifying glasses. The students tried out replanting seedlings so that they could grow into saplings. We needed to make sure that each seedling had enough room to grow in the pot. MPS then enjoyed a botanical treasure hunt where the students were on the look out for plants with particular attributes. We learned many new facts about plants and enjoyed a play in the playground. Thank you for having our students Eurobodalla Botanical Gardens. It was a lovely day.

ANZAC DAY 2024 - FIFE AND DRUM

Dear families

It has been wonderful to have your child practicing and performing in our Moruya Public School Fife & Drum Band.

MPS Fife and Drum Band has been invited to join the ANZAC march in Tuross and perform an item on Thursday 25 April 2024. This is a long standing tradition as our school band has accompanied the ANZAC march in Tuross for over 30 years.

The march begins at Birdwood Circle at 11 am. Please have your child at Birdwood Circle at 10.30 am so we can practice and assemble ourselves for the march. Please ensure your student has their Fife or Tin Whistle and wears their school uniform to the march.

Students are welcome to join with us after the ceremony for a soft drink and a packet of chips at Tuross Club.

Kind regards

Ms Dawson

Fife & Drum Band Coordinator

PSSA Zone Sporting Trials Update

Congratulations to Jessie B and Zara D who have progressed in their PSSA Netball journey. These MPS students will be off to Wollongong next term to trial for the South Coast Netball Team.

Congratulations also goes out to Jamal Furnell-Nye who was successful in progressing to PSSA South Coast Rugby League trials. This will be held next term in Batemans Bay.

We wish all of our representing students the best of luck.

NRL Weyman Legends Gala Day

This week MPS had two teams from Stage 3 representing League tag football and Rugby League football at the NRL Weyman Legends Gala Day in Moruya.

It was a successful day where our students participated in competitive games, and they enjoyed being part of a representative team. Students played matches against local schools and liked playing against teammates from outside of school football.

MPS Cross Country Carnival

The annual MPS Cross Country Carnival will be held tomorrow on Tuesday 9 April 2024. It will be held in our middle session of the day from 11.40 am and will be for students turning 8 this year in year 2 up to year 6.

Families are welcome to come to the school to spectate the event. We hope to see you there.

We would like to thank all MPS families for supporting our students in extending their competitive sporting experience both at school and in competition.

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

walawaani njindiwan

Our wonderful previous students Annalise C and Maddi L from year 6 last year, attended one of our Aboriginal Student Voice meetings to talk to our students about their experience so far in their first term at high school. The girls provided a great overview of things they have done and tips, such as where to go if you get lost. They answered lots of questions. We look forward to catching up with them next term and maintaining our relationship and building our community with Moruya High School. One of our Aboriginal Student Voice students said they really liked that they came back to the school for a visit and to hear all about their Year 7 camp was a highlight.

The community dhurga language lessons started on Wednesday 13 March and have been going strong, with a great turn up. Mrs Boyenga provides a welcoming and supportive environment. So far, we have learnt the Yuin boundary area and groups that make up the Yuin Nation; the research sources for the dhurga dictionary; the 24 dhurga phonemes (language sounds); and some basic greetings such as:

  •        walawaani – ‘safe journey’ A greeting used in meeting and/or parting.

  •          djamaga bumulaga- good morning

  •          djamaga yiribini- good afternoon

Lessons are held every Wednesday from 2.15pm to 3.00pm in the school library. There are still some available spaces, so if you are interested in learning the dhurga language, please contact me.

Our next Yarn Up Afternoon Tea will be on Thursday 2 May 2024 (Week 1 Term 2) from 1.40 pm to 3.00 pm in the Kitchen Garden area. Invitations will be sent home this week.

Have a lovely break!
