Principal's Report

Tuesday 30th May 2023

Hello Everyone,

What a huge few weeks of interschool sports we are in the middle of! Last Wednesday we had our two soccer teams head down to Dixon Field in Gisborne to compete in the district soccer competition. Both teams were made up of students with varied experience but 100% enthusiasm for giving it their all. Goals were scored, passes were made and both teams made it into the play-offs. Well done to all students who participated and a big thank you to Phil Krajewski who coached and supported the teams on the day.

Last Thursday we had one of our grade 5 students, Moser, compete in the Division Championships for cross country. Moser finished 1st in his competition and goes through to the regional competition later on this year. Well done Moser on such a great result, we are super proud of you!

This coming Friday we are sending two netball teams to compete in the district netball competition in Sunbury. It is so wonderful to see so many students raise their hands to be a part of the teams we send to these events. We wish both teams all the best and cannot wait to hear how it goes.

Coming up on the last Tuesday of the term, Tuesday the 20th June, will be our second running of the Lantern Parade. Last year’s Lantern Parade was a huge hit with a large number of students and families taking the opportunity to walk from the school, up Mount Macedon Road and back holding lanterns and looking amazing. If you have any empty milk containers of 2L that you could donate to the school that would be enormously helpful!

Tomorrow our Junior School Council has organised a ‘Wear it Yellow’ day to raise awareness for Children’s Ground, an organisation looking to change the future for First Nations children. Students are asked to wear as much yellow as they can on the day, this can be yellow clothing or a yellow highlight in the form of a head band, bow or socks etc. There will be the opportunity to donate money to this cause, more information on that is included in the information below.

Just a quick reminder to make sure we are being safe in the car park, both as pedestrians and whilst driving. We need to make sure that when walking over to the car park from the school that we remain on the crossing till we have made it to the other side without sneaking up between the gutter and the road. It is vital that we do not U-turn across Mount Macedon road and make sure we are stationary and parked before letting children come to the car. Can I also ask that we make sure not to park in any ‘no standing’ areas, this can limit the vision of the crossing supervisor making it difficult to see when cars are approaching.

If you have any questions, concerns or feedback at any stage please do not hesitate to come and see me for a chat.

Joe.

SEEKING PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Do you know someone that has a little time they could spare to help students learn to be come a Chess wiz?

We are hoping to book in a group of students to attend the Castelmaine Chess Championship in September.  In order to make this a wonderful and exciting opportunity for students it would be great to have a helping hand to teach the ‘tricks of the trade’.

An hour once a week is all wee need and you will be helping along side a staff member.

Have a great week.

Thank you.

Our Well-being and Inclusion Coordinator Olivia Desormeaux is available at MMPS on Monday's and Tuesday's.

Building Resilience: Nurturing Strong and Confident Students

At Mount Macedon Primary, we believe that fostering resilience in our primary-aged students is vital for their overall growth and success. Resilience empowers children to navigate challenges, bounce back from setbacks, and thrive in an ever-changing world. This term, we are focusing on building resilience, with the support of both the Kimochis and Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials.

The Kimochis program supports social and emotional learning, helping children understand and manage their feelings effectively. Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials promotes positive, respectful interactions among students, fostering a safe and supportive school environment.

Resilience is a key attribute that enables students to adapt, cope, and recover from difficult experiences. It is a quality that can be nurtured and strengthened over time through a combination of guidance from both school and home. As parents, you play an integral role in instilling resilience in your children. Here are some practical examples you can engage in at home to support this journey:

1. Embrace a Growth Mindset: Teach your child that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and practice. Encourage them to view challenges as opportunities for growth. Praise their effort and perseverance rather than solely focusing on outcomes or grades.

2. Encourage Problem-Solving Skills: Help your child develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. Encourage them to find solutions to their own problems and make decisions independently. Provide guidance and support when needed.

3. Promote Emotional Regulation: Assist your child in understanding and expressing their emotions in healthy ways. Create a safe space for them to share their feelings and provide tools for managing stress and anxiety, such as deep breathing exercises or journaling.

4. Cultivate Perseverance: Engage your child in activities that require sustained effort and practice. Encourage them to stick with tasks even when faced with challenges or temporary setbacks. This could involve learning a musical instrument, participating in a sport, or tackling a complex puzzle.

By working together—school and home—we can empower our students to face adversity with confidence, maintain a positive outlook, and persevere through life's challenges. Let's equip them with the tools they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to a year filled with growth, learning, and building resilience.

Warm regards,

Olivia Desormeaux

Wear it Yellow Day - National Reconciliation Week

An initiative of Children’s Ground as part of our National Reconciliation Week this year, on Wednesday 31st May, we are encouraging all students and teachers to take part in a yellow-themed casual dress day (this can be wearing your yellow school uniform shirt, a yellow ribbon or yellow socks) to raise funds for a First Nations organisation, Children’s Ground.

The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2023 is ‘Be a voice for generations.’ This theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and play. That is why our school has chosen to participate in Children’s Ground’s ‘Wear It Yellow’ day.

As part of ‘Wear It Yellow Day’, students will engage with National Reconciliation Week learning materials and have vibrant discussions about First Nations culture and history.

We remind students and teachers who take part to donate what you can to Children’s Ground via this link https://wearityellow.org.au/mount-macedon-primary-school . No donations will be collected by the school directly.

For more information on Children’s Ground, head to https://childrensground.org.au/

MMPS Update by School Reporter Harriet

Hello everyone and welcome to week 6!  What a very energetic week we had last week! Happy National Reconciliation week!

Last Wednesday some students went to District soccer. We hear that it was lots of fun, even though we didn’t win. There were a couple bumps and bruises but we hope they recover quickly! A big thank you to the teachers that organised and went to the event as well as the parents that helped out on the day. See below for some photos.

Division cross country was held on Thursday. Moser was the lucky person who got to represent our school. He reported that it was hard, tiring and he had some nerves because there were 80 amazing runners. But Moser made us proud by getting first place! He will now go on to regionals.

This week is National Reconciliation week. The theme for 2023 is Be a Voice for Generations.  For me this means being a positive role model and working towards equality for all Australians.  We will be commemorating National Reconciliation week by holding a casual clothes day on Wednesday.  Wear Yellow Day will help support “Childrens Ground”, an organisation dedicated to ensuring equity for First Nations children.

On Friday we will have District Netball, there will be a selection of students will be playing at Boardman Stadium in Sunbury . They will have a fun day of playing netball against a number of schools in our area.

Have a good week everyone,

Harriet

Digital Technology at MMPS

For the past few weeks, Grade 2/3 and 4 students have been working on their Hollywood epic movies, but as Mrs Hyland didn't give me the $5,000,000 budget I requested for this project, we are just making the trailers for the planned movie instead.

Just like a good movie, movie trailers have all the things we would expect; action, drama, a sweeping soundtrack and... zombies?

Next week we will be learning how to make some special effects, add a touch of editing, and hopefully, we can have a viewing soon.

In the meantime, you can have an early screening of one of the trailers by watching the video below... (warning: contains zombies and 8-year-old boy acting...)

National Simultaneous Story Time

Last week on Wednesday the whole school participated in national Simultaneous Story Time. This is an Australia-wide group reading and literacy event, where schools, libraries and other institutions gather school-age children together to read the same chosen picture book at the same time. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an important campaign held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

This year the story book chosen was The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young and Heath Mckenzie. The students all really enjoyed the story and and thought the message of "don't compare yourself to others" was an important one.

Lantern Parade - Milk Bottles Required

Our much anticipated Lantern Parade is coming up on Tuesday 20th June, and the children will be starting to create their lanterns in Art. They will be working on them over the next few weeks leading up to the Lantern Parade. Could we please ask every child bring in an empty 2Lt milk container like the one pictured below. The bottle must be: translucent, clean and ideally have labels removed. Students that are away or not here on the day of the parade are still required to bring in a bottle as they will be working on them progressively over the next few weeks in Art activities.

Thank you.
