How lucky am I
Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts, gifts and best wishes over recent weeks after sharing my decision to retire. I will always remember the generous spirit of the Drummoyne community, the faithful support of the school’s leadership team, and the wonderful teachers and staff of DPS.
At Tuesday’s assembly, I asked the children if they had heard of Winnie-the-Pooh, created by the famous English writer and poet, Alan Alexander Milne and there was a very positive response.
In one of Milne’s books, Winnie-the-Pooh says, ‘How lucky am I, to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.’
I told the school assembly on Tuesday that I have been as lucky as Winnie-the-Pooh as I have worked in some wonderful schools like Drummoyne PS and with many wonderful students, teachers and parents over these past 47 years, and it is hard to say goodbye!
In my time at DPS, I have presented many farewell certificates to students who have left the school and now it’s my turn.
Just as in past assembly talks, the lesson I’m going to remind myself is that life is full of endings and beginnings. Sadness about what’s ending but excitement about new friends and new adventures.
In a conversation between Winnie the Pooh and his best friend Piglet, Piglet says, “when you wake up in the morning Pooh, what's the first thing you say to yourself?”
“What's for breakfast?” said Pooh.
“What do you say, Piglet?”
“I say, I wonder what's going to happen that’s exciting to-day?” said Piglet.
My hope is that now and, in the future, each morning, every DPS student will wake up, and like Piglet will ask, what exciting things they are going to learn today.
It has been a privilege to serve as your Principal over the past 8 years and as I embrace new adventures, I will be truly grateful for all that I have experienced and learnt at Drummoyne Public School.
