Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 10 Newsletter - Friday 4 July 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Term 2 Reflection

As Term 2 draws to a close, it's a great time to pause and reflect on the many rich experiences our students have enjoyed this term – both in and beyond the classroom.

In addition to the wonderful teaching and learning taking place each day, our students took part in a wide range of opportunities that supported their wellbeing, confidence and connection to each other. These included the Healthy Harold visit, Peer Support program, Reconciliation Week activities, spelling bees, public speaking competitions, inter-school debates and PSSA gala days.

We also saw students thrive on the sporting field at our Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals, explore healthy lifestyles through our Healthy Eating incursion with The Root Cause, experience life on the land during the Kindergarten farm excursion and our Stage 3 students spent a memorable few days full of learning, fun and friendship in Canberra as they deepened their understanding of civics and citizenship. The term ended on a high note with our Winter Soirée – a fantastic celebration of the musical talent in our school and a lovely way to bring our community together.

Winter Soirée Wrap-up

And  what a spectacular night it was! We were absolutely thrilled by the incredible turnout at our very first Winter Soirée in its new format. The evening was packed with energy and talent, highlighting the enthusiasm of our students and the strength of our music and band programs. A heartfelt thank you to you, our wonderful school community – from grabbing extra chairs to topping up the bread rolls, and most importantly, cheering on our young performers with such warmth and support, your attendance and enthusiasm made it a night to remember for our students.

Apologies to those who missed out on a (perfectly cooked!) sausage – we completely sold out, which is a great problem to have. Rest assured, we’ll be ordering plenty more for the Summer Soirée later in the year. Fair warning: it might be time to brush up on your Christmas carols!

Special thanks go to Suzy Sole for coordinating the evening and leading many of our exciting new ensembles. Thank you also to Mr Neufeld for his work with the ukulele group, Ms Buchanan for preparing the Stage 1 choir, Ms Xenos for directing the Stage 3 choir, who gave a brilliant closing performance, and Ms Champion for preparing the Stage 2 choir so thoroughly – it was a pleasure for me to step in and conduct them on the night!

We’d also like to thank Phil, Mikayla and Kevin from Directions in Music for their fantastic work with both our Junior and Senior Bands – their support and expertise are helping our band program go from strength to strength.

On that note, it's not too late for your child to join any of our music groups for Semester 2 and I hope to see more students taking advantage of the wonderful opportunities on offer at our school.

Looking forward to Term 3

There’s so much to get excited about in Term 3! We’ll kick things off with NAIDOC Week celebrations (actual NAIDOC Week is in the holidays) , including hands-on art workshops with Taleena Simon, an Aboriginal artist from the Boomalli Gallery in Leichhardt. Education Week is just around the corner too – and yes, on top of our usual Education Week assembly and open morning, we’ve got something fun planned for parents with a Taikoz drumming workshop! There’s the always-colourful Book Week parade, Year 4 heading off to camp at Stanwell Tops, and some big performances on the horizon with our choirs, recorder and string ensembles set to take the stage at the Sydney Opera House and Town Hall. And of course – the FETE is coming!

These kinds of events are more than just fun – they help our students feel connected, confident and proud to be part of our school. I can’t wait to see everyone back on Tuesday 22 July for what’s shaping up to be another amazing term.

Regards,

John Nguyen

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Festival of Choral Music Rehearsal

On Tuesday, 1st July, the Stage 3 Choir journeyed to the Salvation Army Hall to prepare for their upcoming Festival of Choral Music at the Opera House.

The choir sang beautifully for hours on end, and represented Drummoyne with pride. They are an asset to our school, and have worked extremely hard to ensure they are sounding fantastic for the Festival. Well done, Stage 3 choir!

Jacqui Hill & Maria Arruzza

Stage 3 Overnight Excursion to Canberra

Our Stage 3 students had many wonderful learning opportunities last week on their 3-day excursion to Canberra. Students engaged in role plays at Parliament House, learned the voting process at the Electoral Education Centre, visited the Museum of Democracy , and valued the opportunity to engage in the 'We Will Remember Them' Program at The Australian War Memorial. Interactive activities were also enjoyed at Questacon and the National Arboretum. These high-quality educational sessions were the culmination of history studies for students this semester.

Thank you to our accompanying teachers, Amanda Champion, Jacqui Hill, Elyse Mooney, Orla Page and Leah Pegler for their supervision, care and sacrificially leaving behind their families to support this wonderful learning opportunity.

While each of our students benefited from the rich learning,  the additional benefits for them were significant. Teachers observed new relationships being made and existing ones deepen. Our school values of respect and responsibility were seen day and night. Resilience was noticed when students used their initiative to seek support, face their uncertainties, and with teacher guidance, demonstrate the perseverance required. Overnight excursions provide the opportunity for students to reflect on their developing maturity and celebrate their many successes. Students should be proud of the way they cared for each other. Throughout the trip, they were complimented for their respectful behaviour and willingness to share their learning with the educators.

Thank you, parents and carers, for your support and for partnering with us. Wonderful memories were created for our senior students.

Stage 3 Assistant Principal

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Our Year 6 students at Drummoyne PS have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. As part of their study, students participated in many educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program is an Australian Government initiative that provides financial assistance to support students’ on-site learning about national democratic, historical and cultural institutions in Canberra. By visiting select locations in Canberra, DPS qualified for the $30 rebate, which is allocated on a per student basis.

Peer Support

The 'Moving Forward' peer support program has concluded at the end of Term 3, marking a significant milestone in our efforts to foster resilience among students. Throughout the term, participants engaged in various activities designed to enhance their coping skills, promote positive relationships, and build a supportive community. The program not only encouraged students to share their experiences but also equipped them with practical tools to navigate challenges effectively.

As we reflect on the accomplishments of 'Moving Forward,' we celebrate the growth and connections formed among students, laying a strong foundation for their continued personal development.

CAPA

Winter Soiree

Our Winter Soiree was a spectacular celebration of student talent and creativity, showcasing performances from our Junior and Senior Bands, Recorder and String Ensembles, The Dukes (our ukulele club), and the Stage 1, 2, and 3 Choirs. It was a full house - the biggest music event we’ve seen in years!

A special mention must go to Mr Nguyen’s sausage sizzle, which was such a hit it completely sold out! We’ll be sure to double the supply for our next event. Thank you to all the wonderful families who supported the fundraiser. Every sausage sold helps raise much-needed funds for our CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) department.

Thank you again to all who attended and supported the evening. It was a joyful celebration of the arts and a great reminder of the talent and energy in our school community.

Suzy Sole

Assembly Star

This week’s Assembly Star is Olivia D from 3/4R. She played “The Busybody” by Sheila Nelson on the violin. Olivia is part of our DPS String Ensemble who will be playing at the Opera House in September this year.

OFFICE NEWS

Student Safety Reminder – Use the Kerbside Door

We’ve noticed an increasing number of students exiting vehicles from the road-side door during drop-off and pick-up. This is a serious safety risk, and we want to avoid any accidents.

Please help us keep all students safe by ensuring your child always enters and exits the car from the kerbside door. A few extra seconds of care can make all the difference.

Thanks for your support in keeping our school community safe!

Lost Property

With the recent cold weather changes students are taking their jackets on and off throughout the day and many are ending up, unclaimed, in lost property!

Office staff have been endeavoring to return items to students where the owner's name is clearly marked but many items have no name or the name of a student who has left the school.

Please clearly mark your child's hats, jackets, lunchboxes etc and encourage them to be responsible for their belongings.

Thank you

Enrol Younger Siblings for 2026 Now!

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
