Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Dear Families

Yesterday the staff were led in a professional learning day aligned with the MACS Vision for Engagement document. Together as a team we engaged in professional learning with MACS Team Teach trainers to support staff in continuing to create a positive school culture, response to student behaviour, as well as promoting staff safety.

Team Teach is an accredited professional development program built on proactive behaviour support, with a strong emphasis on relationship building, de-escalation, and minimising risk. It centres on practical, preventative strategies and offers a structured, respectful response to incidents.

Training equips staff with:

  • Practical strategies for supporting positive student behaviour

  • De-escalation and risk reduction techniques

  • Restorative processes following incidents

  • Clarity around relevant legislation and MACS policy expectations

The Vision for Engagement document and Team Teach align well with our

SJB School Wide Expectations for positive behaviour.

SJB School Expectations:

At SJB we:

  • Care for each other

  • Are Responsible Learners

  • Move and act safely

  • Look after property and the environment

Welcome Mrs Chantelle Santamaria

We warmly welcome Mrs Chantelle Santamaria to SJB as a classroom teacher on Mondays and Tuesdays with Mrs Amanda Heidenrijk. Chantelle replaces Ms Melissa Lynch who concluded her time at SJB last Friday.

Chantelle is an experienced teacher with a wealth of expertise in the junior school and MACS Vision for Instruction.

Mental Health in Primary Schools role update

We thank Mrs Franca Paduano for moving into the role of MHiPS leader. Franca and Melissa Lynch have worked closely throughout the year and have attended professional learning together in the areas of MHiPS and Respectful Relationships. Franca will move to a full time allocation for the remainder of the year as she takes on the MHiPS role with her Learning Diversity Role. We thank Franca for sharing her ongoing support and commitment to learning diversity and student wellbeing.

Onsite School Parking - Kiss and Go Conclusion

As we settle into full access to the school and reflect on movement, parking and Kiss & Go  the following changes will commence from Tuesday 19th August. Kiss and Go will no longer be in operation due to the very small number of families using this option. Families will return to using the two pick up bays on the Selman Ave parking side as a Kiss & Go option.  The carpark on Forest Road will reopen for families to park and walk students to and from school. After school supervision by SJB staff will occur in the lower areas of the car park to assist with safe movement of students.

Families are reminded that all students are required to be accompanied by an adult when moving to parked cars or to the oval to play after school. For safety purposes at no time are students permitted to move to cars or the oval without a parent or guardian.

We are most fortunate to have new spaces for children to learn and access both indoors and outdoors. We ask families to please support our students in remembering that garden beds are areas that are out of bounds. This provides the plants with the opportunity to establish and maintain garden mulch in its designated areas.

The playground behind the portables is located on parish land which is also an out of bounds area. We ask families to remind their children that this area is strictly not to be played in at any time.

We look forward to many wonderful times ahead with our new learning and play spaces.

St John the Baptist Art Show - Save the Date

The Biennial St John the Baptist Art Show will be held in the school hall this year on Wednesday 17th September 2:30 - 4:30pm and Thursday 18th September 5:30 - 7:30pm.  We warmly welcome families to celebrate the artistic talents of all our students. This is a wonderful community event that celebrates our students' creative expression through their artwork.

Mrs Renee Armstrong continues to work tirelessly with all students in preparation for the Art Show. We are most excited and looking forward to celebrating our students amazing efforts.

At the conclusion of this year’s Art Show a number of the students' work will be on display at The Hut Gallery and Burrinja Centre. We thank Renee for her passion, dedication and support of our students in preparing this wonderful event.

Cold and Flu Season

As we return to school for Term 3 we commence in the heart of Cold and Flu season.  We ask families to take time to discuss with students how to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing as well as how to wash their hands.  Preventing the spread of winter illnesses benefits all in the community.

A number of families have contacted the office to inform us of student illness. We thank families for ensuring unwell students are able to recover at home and return to school well. We remind families in the event that your child is unwell please keep them at home to rest and recover.

Term 3 Optional Parent/Teacher Interviews

At St John the Baptist we strongly value our partnerships with our families and the importance of open communication.  To continue our strong partnerships we have introduced an Optional Parent Teacher Interview in Term 3 on Tuesday September 16th. The Optional Parent Teacher Interviews may be booked by families or requested by your child’s class teacher, should they feel that it is important to meet with you.

Interviews will be able to be booked through our new booking system - School Interviews site.

Families are reminded that should you have a PSG for your child that this takes the place of the Parent/Teacher Interview.

MACSSIS Surveys

A significant and formal way in which we engage and gather data is through MACSSIS, the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys.

MACSSIS is a set of surveys that have been built specifically for Catholic schools in Melbourne by the Learning Services team at MACS, in partnership with researchers at Learning First and in wide consultation with principals in our schools.

MACSSIS surveys will be emailed home this week to 70 randomly selected families.  We ask that you look out for an email from ORIMA research which will contain the link to access the survey.  Your login details will be sent in a separate email from our school.

Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – MACSSIS is a key data source so please take the time to complete the survey so that the thoughts and opinions of our whole school community can be used in guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.

If you would like more information, please contact the school.

Year 3/4 Camp

This September our Year 3/4 students will attend an overnight camp at Camp Briars through Belgravia Outdoor Education. The camp will be held in Week 8 of the term with the students departing on Thursday 11th September and returning on Friday 12th September.

This is an exciting time for our students as they prepare for their first school camp.

Families will have received an Operoo form to complete in preparation for camp.

Year 3/4 Excursion to the Melbourne Museum

On Monday 11th August, the 3/4 classes went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum to explore the topics from our Inquiry unit this term, which is Geography. We visited the Dynamic Earth, 600 Million Years, and the Forest Gallery. The students read information, asked questions, and took part in hands-on experiences that helped bring their learning to life. A highlight of the day was weighing themselves to work out what they would be worth in gold .This was an activity everyone especially loved! After exploring the museum galleries, the students also watched the IMAX movie Our Beautiful Planet, which gave them an amazing view of the Earth and the importance of looking after it. The students had a fantastic day and really enjoyed this wonderful experience.

Father's Day

The SJB Father’s Day Stall will be held on Tuesday 2nd September from 9am.  Families are now able to purchase tokens for the Father’s Day Stall through Flexischools.

Further information will be shared in the coming weeks as our terrific P & F team plan and prepare for this year’s Father’s Day Stall.

Save the Date: This year’s SJB Father’s Day Brekkie will be held on Friday 5th September from 7:30am.  We look forward to welcoming our Dads and special people to celebrate our Dads and the important role they play in our students’ lives.

Tuckshop Closed - Friday 5th September

The tuckshop will be closed on Friday 5th September as this will be the Father’s Day Breakfast. This is a significant event that our wonderful tuckshop officer Tracey Walker oversees. To run the community event and tuckshop in one morning is significant. We will therefore pause tuckshop on this day.

Footy Day - Friday 19th September last day of Term 3

To celebrate the end of another terrific term of learning and work we have scheduled Friday 19th September as Footy Day.  The students can come in their footy colours from any football code for the day. We look forward to a fun day of activities, as well as a special Footy Day lunch.  Further information will be shared in the near future.
