From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 2!

Professional Learning

During Week 1 we held 2 School Develpoment Days incorporating professional learning for teachers focusing on High Potential Gifted Education (HPGE). Teachers investigated the HPGE policy and explored ways to support our HPG students.

This term, we continue our focus on improving academic outcomes for students in mathematics. Teachers are working together, supported by Mrs White, our Assistant Principal Curriculum and instruction, to examine student results and to ensure all students are taught at their point of need.

This week we welcomed a group of teachers from 2 local schools to watch our teachers in action, delivering explicit teaching in mathematics. Congratulations to the teachers & students in 1/2 Bandicoots, 3/4 Kookaburras and the Year 5 Emus for demonstrating such outstanding teaching and learning. Our visitors were very impressed!

Enrolments

This term we have welcomed a number of new families to our school. As of Monday, our student numbers will reach 140. Thank you to all the parents and carers who continue to promote Telopea Public School and Public Education to families in our local area.

Thank you

A huge shout out to the P&C and all the parent volunteers for a very successful election day BBQ & cake stall and Mother's Day Stall. Both events were a huge success!

Thank you also to all the mothers and family members who joined us for a lovely Mother's Day Breakfast. It was wonderful to see this event so well supported and to meet lots of new mums. Thank you also to Miss Pip, who always works tirelessly to ensure these events can happen for our school community.

Reporting to parents

From Semester 1 2025, we’re introducing updated school reports. The new format has been developed by the NSW Department of Education in response to feedback from parents and educators to make reports easier to read and understand. Your child’s report will still show their progress across all subject areas. Teacher comments will appear in English, mathematics and the general comment section, in line with department policy. The general comment for Kindergarten also covers all other key learning areas including, creative arts, HSIE, PDHPE, and science and technology. A new achievement scale and descriptions are included to provide a clearer picture of your child’s progress. Semester 1 reports will be released to families during Week 10, Term 2. We welcome your feedback or questions about the new report format.

Parent–teacher interviews remain an important way to discuss your child’s progress and achievement in more detail. Thank you to the parents and carers who came along to the formal interviews at the end of Term 1. Teachers are of course, always happy to meet with parents and carers throughout the school year to discuss issues concerning your child. Please phone the school office to arrange an appointment time should this be required.

NSW Public Schools Student Survey

In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.

Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.

Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which will be sent home, and return it to the school. Further information about the survey is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss

Celebrating student learning

Congratulations to these students who have achieved a learning goal and have proudly shared this achievement with Mrs Dooley in the Principal's office this month.

Telopea Public School Facebook Page

The official Telopea Public School Facebook Page is now live. The purpose of this page is to inform, inspire and engage our school and local community and to share good news stories about our school. Students with permission to publish may be featured on our Facebook page as well as in our school newsletter.

Our school community are invited to view and like our new Facebook page and to share this with family and friends. Please note, our main form of communication with families will continue to be Audiri and School Bytes for official notifications.

https://www.facebook.com/TelopeaPS

All users of our Facebook page are reminded that we follow the Department's Social Media guidelines:

Social media is a great community building tool, and a place where we can communicate important messages, and the great work our students do every day.

We encourage parents to be considerate when engaging online, and to ensure they are acting in line with the NSW Department of Education Official School Rules of Engagement.

Role modelling positive online behaviour ensures our students can develop as responsible digital citizens. The School Community Charter is a great reminder of the responsibilities parents, carers, educators and staff have to ensure our learning environments are supportive.

If you see something online that raises concern, please reach out to the school or alternatively report the content if it goes against the community standards of the platform. For more information on how to report content, please visit the eSafety Commissioner website.External link

Please reach out to the school if you have questions or concerns.

Student Attendance

Did you know...

Parents & carers must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unexplained on the student's record.

Congratulations to these classes with the best attendance in recent weeks:

Week 1 - Year 1 Quokkas & Year 1/2 Bandicoots

Week 2 - Year 6 Emus - 100% OUTSTANDING!!!!

What's Happening Year 3/4 Wombats

The Year 3 -4 Wombats are working to be their best. The 3-4s loved reading the DET text, the ‘Thing About Oliver’ where they looked at story patterns and character’s point of views.

They researched and wrote wonderful speeches on ‘Space’ objects which linked to the English and Science syllabuses. Using palm cards, they presented wonderfully. They also created spectacular creative art pieces to accompany the speeches. Ms Michie has been so proud of them all.

The Wombats have practised and played modified Newcombe ball. They have been learning to work as a team, follow the game rules and to practise sportsmanship and resilience. Well done, Wombats!

Lastly, the Wombats have had the fabulous opportunity to work with the non-profit organisation, Story Factory where they created imaginative stories about pixies and power which were edited and published. The class and Ms Michie would like to thank Story Factory for their creative writing programs, the time and effort put into teaching and learning, and the volunteers for their time and dedication, including the gregarious storyteller, Jerry. We love Story Factory!

Sports T Shirts have now been re-stocked!

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

Election Day Wrap Up

Thank you to our wonderful school community for all the support we received for our Election Day Fundraiser. We raised in excess of $1,000 for the school gardening program through our democracy sausage sizzle and cake stall.

Thank you to everyone for the delicious donations for our cake stall and to our wonderful volunteers who helped on the day or in the lead up to the event: Kellie Darley, Fiona Daugherty, Violet, Lilah, Reanna-Lee Dempsey, Victoria Govers, Abekan Kigbo, Alice Knight, Helen Larosse, Arianna, Amina, Stephen Lee, Veronica, Keith Marshall, Holly, Freya , Ewan Marshall, Janelle Parker, Autumn,Tarina Popham, Robert Smit, Kavini Sureshan, Arsheya, Amy Wymark, Scott Wymark, Mackenzie and Zoe.

A special thank you to our Vice President Jess who personally put in a lot of time to organise the event from start to finish and to Mr BBQ himself - Keith Marshall for kindly offering to be there for the duration of the event so we could run a democracy sausage sizzle for the hungry voters.

Mother's Day Stall

Thankyou to Suzy Alejla, Noraini Azmi, Reanna-Lee Dempsey, Victoria Govers, Paije Loramo, Jessica Lee, Paletina Lemi, Tarina Popham and Ghillian Sullivan for volunteering over multiple days to help prepare all the gifts for our mothers day stall. Your efforts ensured our wonderful students had an abundance of beautiful gifts for their special mums. We will decide where the funds raised will be used at our upcoming meeting on 21 May.

Next P&C Meeting 21 May

Our next P&C general meeting will be at 6:30pm Wednesday 21st May in the conference room.  These meetings are a great opportunity to put forward your thoughts and ideas for future events, help decide how funds raised should be redirected back into the school, and raise issues/ concerns you'd like to discuss. This month's meeting will include a discussion on how to utilise funds raised at our recent mother's day stall and planning for our athletics carnival lunch pack. If you haven't yet joined the P&C, why not come along to a meeting and find out more about us.

If you cannot attend feel free to email us at telopeapspandc@gmail.com and we can raise your items at the meeting or reply to you.

Warm regards

Schools as a Community Centre

Dear Telopea PS and SaCC Communities,

Welcome back for Term 2 . While the cooler weather is upon us the term has commenced with warmth and great community spirit burning brightly.

The recent Mother's Day Breakfast a buzz of chatter, friendship and community connectedness. It was certainly a pleasure providing the opportunity for our parents and carers via the TPS Breakfast Club program.

Breakfast Club is provided FREE for all TPS students every Monday and Thursday 8:30am-8:50am. Toast, cereal, breakfast milky drinks and breakfast bars are always available. Cheese toasties, fruit smoothies and fresh fruit offered when available.

Recently I have attended some professional development opportunities. The Children's Book Council of Australia launch of the newest region....Western Sydney. The opportunity to network with like minded people interested in promoting reading with children was a blast. I am hoping to connect with the group through the SaCC Project.

In addition I have been learning about the Department of Education Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and how to use the framework to assist children and their families in Belonging Being and Becoming. The practices of the EYLF are adopted through the SaCC Supported Playgroup.

Please contact me directly if you have children in the birth to five years age range to enquire about SaCC programs and initiatives.
