Term 3 Week 5 Newsletter - Friday 23 August 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Book Week Parade

This week, we celebrated Book Week at Drummoyne. Cultivating a love of reading in our students is so important and can be quite difficult, especially in today’s age of screens and streams. With this in mind, it was fantastic to see our school community come together at Monday afternoon’s Book Week Parade to celebrate books and reading. The effort that so many of you put into creating your child/ren’s costume/s was amazing to see and to have so many of you come to the parade really made the celebration special. A special shout out to our brilliant teachers who, as always, went to the depths of Mordor in their efforts to join our students in the fun and celebrations. If you weren’t able to make it on Monday, please enjoy looking through some of the photos included in this week’s newsletter. A special thanks to our teacher librarian, Mr Neufeld, for his fantastic organisation and MCing skills as well as our resident photographer, Nina.

‘Mad Food’ Incursion

Our students participated in The Mad Food Science Incursion this week. This healthy eating program was run by Certified Instructor, Suzanne Burke, who helped our students to  learn about food, how it can make them feel many different ways and how what we eat can impact the planet.

We have organised for Suzanne to return to our school in September to lead a parent seminar prior to the September P&C meeting on Tuesday 17/09 at 6:15pm. Further information in regards to this seminar will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Fete

As I have watched the tombola jars pile up in my office over the last few weeks,  it would be remiss of me not to say how humbling it is to see the time and energy that the parent community has put into preparations for our fete on Sunday. A special thank you goes to the Fete Committee, whose tireless efforts, creativity and meticulous planning have been remarkable. I am excited to see the joy and excitement this day will bring and I look forward to celebrating with you all.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

The Mad Food Science Incursion

This week our students participated in The Mad Food Science Incursion with Certified Instructor, Suzanne Burke from the Root Cause. Like true scientists, the students were given the opportunity to make predictions, participate in experiments and evaluate their findings.

One of the agreed highlights was how good the banana, strawberry and spinach smoothie tasted even though it was green. The students also learnt about food packaging and how to read labels. She addressed the importance of a balanced diet and how food impacts the way we feel.

To wrap up the session, Suzanne showed images of food packages littering our environment and the students problem solved how this may be impacting our planet.

A free parent seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, 17 September at 6.15 - 7.15pm in the school library. To find out more go to https://vimeo.com/677949133/7106ec9d16

Focus on the Olympics

Today Angela Farrell came and talked to us about her life in the Olympics.

Number 1, she talked about sailing that she was in front looking for if there was any wind.

Number 2, she only did one year at the Olympics.

Number 3, she talked a little bit about running as well. Then, guess what? She came 5th!

By Christina T 1/2M

Today, Angela came to my classroom. She was in the Olympics.

My favourite thing that she said was about the boat ride. She only had a break one day a week. She also has the same name as my neighbour. She did running and sailing.

By Antonia C 1/2M

Today my class was lucky enough to listen to an ex-Olympian, Angela Farrell, who told us all about her Olympic career.First, she showed us her four medals and told us about the people on the boat. Secondly, she told us about her diet and how she got to Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Dear Parents and Carers,

During Term 3, students will participate in the Check-in assessment. The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.

Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.

  • The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 students during Weeks 6, 7, 8 & 9.
