Term 1 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 28 March 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

National Young Leaders Day

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure, along with Ms Russ, of accompanying our prefects to the National Young Leaders Day conference at the ICC. It was an inspiring day where students heard from a range of leaders in their fields, including Olympian Emma McKeon.

The highlight for me, however, was hearing Catherine (Katie) Laga'aia speak. After a rigorous audition process (which she shared with us in detail), Katie was chosen to play Moana in Disney’s upcoming live-action movie remake of ‘Moana’ - a truly incredible achievement. I was especially proud as I was Katie’s Year 6 teacher at Nicholson Street Public School. It’s not every day you get to say you taught a Disney princess (although, I must admit that I have been doing this quite a lot of late)!

The day was a fantastic reminder that anything is possible for our students and I know our prefects walked away feeling just as inspired as I did.

School Photos – Thank You!

A big thank you to our parent community for ensuring our students looked their best for school photos today. Your support is always appreciated! A special shout-out to Mr Roche for his seamless organisation of the day - coordinating schedules and keeping everything running smoothly is no small task and he did a fantastic job. Photos can still be ordered via  https://www.theschoolphotographer.com.au using the code, X2042EL54D.

Sporting Success at Drummoyne

It’s been great to see our students making the most of the many sporting opportunities available at Drummoyne, from the morning AFL clinics over the last few weeks to the lacrosse program, which kicked off this week. I’d particularly like to recognise some of our older students who have trialled for and made representative teams through the Public Schools Sports Association (PSSA). Congratulations to:

🏀 Isaac, David, Jake, and Eliza for making the zone basketball teams

🏉 Charles and Ashton for making the rugby league team

🏈 Ella for making the Metropolitan East AFL team

A huge congratulations to our high-achieving sports stars

Regards,

John Nguyen

Harmony Day Celebrations

On Friday March 21, Drummoyne Public School celebrated Harmony Day, and what a day it was!

The day began with an assembly highlighting our school’s cultural diversity. Our students from Kindergarten, Stage 1 and Stage 2 presented us with a beautiful song ‘Orso Bruno’, a rendition of “Brown Bear’ in Italian.

Our Guest speaker, Mr George Manolakos spoke to us about the importance of cultural heritage, and of his own experiences living in what he described as two worlds. His Greek world and his Australian world. We thank him for such an inspiring and entertaining talk!

Stage 3 Greek students summed up or assembly with a dazzling performance symbolising the unity and multiculturalism in Australia. The students danced the traditional ‘Hasaposerviko’. Each student bearing a flag of a different nation, that has shaped and developed what we know today as multicultural Australia. The performance ended with a display of the word’ Harmony’. The very essence of what we live each day.

Students continued the day, participating in craft activities from various nations and cultures. They enjoyed learning the meaning and reasons behind these customs, as well as listening to traditional music from that culture. These activities will be displayed in our corridors for all to enjoy!

We look forward to yet another year of Harmony at Drummoyne!

NSW Premier's Spelling Bee

Once again Drummoyne Public School will be entering one junior and one senior student into the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Finals.

We have a proud record of our students spelling their way to outstanding results in the Regionals, with every student selected achieving a top ten place, including two second places in consecutive years. 2017 and 2019 saw DPS represented at the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee State Final, held at the ABC Television Studios, in which Adrian and Darius finished in the top five, respectively.

Will 2025 be the year of another state finalist?

Look out for further details on how to enter, at the beginning of Term 2. In the meantime, you can start practicing by getting your hands on the official 2025 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee word list at: https://artsunit.nsw.edu.au/program/nsw-premiers-spelling-bee#word-lists

The password can be obtained from the School Office, students' classrooms or from Mr Sutton. Please direct all enquiries to Mr Sutton.

Attention all Snowsports enthusiasts

Miriam Johnston, mother of Evelyn in 5/6C, has expressed interest in getting a team organised to compete at the Interschools Snowsports Championships to be held in Thredbo in July.

The Interschools Snowsports Championships is a series of snow sports competitions where students compete for their school as part of a team or as an individual in any of nine discipline events.

The competition is open to school students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Much more detailed information is available at https://cdn.revolutionise.com.au/site/u9vgetvblyf9dlji.pdf

If you are interested, could you please let me know before the end of next week, Friday 28th March. Registrations for the Championships need to be finalised by the end of April and we have holidays coming up. My email is leah.pegler@det.nsw.edu.au

Please note that whilst we may enter a school team, parents will be responsible for transport, accommodation etc for the duration of the event.

OFFICE NEWS

Important information if your child travels to school by bus?

From 24 February to 21 March 2025 Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services. It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important? The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

*Marginal Increase to Our Canteen Menu Prices *

In response to rising operating costs in 2025, the P&C have reviewed and approved a modest price increase to some items on the canteen menu. This change will take effect from Term 2, 2025, with most items seeing a small price increase of between 50c to $1.

Despite the adjustment, our menu remains an excellent value, with sandwiches starting at just $3. Additionally, popular items like frozen fruit and Quelch sticks will remain at their current prices, so that students can continue to enjoy these treats for just 50c to $1!

We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your continued support of the canteen.
