Principal's Report

Tuesday 11th July 2023

Hello Everyone,

It’s hard to believe that we are in Term 3 already. It was lovely to welcome the children back yesterday and to hear all about their holidays. This term is a busy one (I know that I say that at the start of every term!). I returned from my trip at the start of the holidays (I had a wonderful time) and one of the first things I did was to come up to school. I missed you all!! I’d like to thank Joe Flynn for doing such a great job of replacing me and the staff who supported him so well.

We have our annual production, scheduled for the end of the term. This year it is called “Winding Jamboree”. Auditions will be held over the next two weeks and rehearsals will start shortly after that. I love production – it reminds us all how important the creative arts are as part of our curriculum. Every year we are amazed at the level of singing, dancing, performing talent that we have at the school. One of our past students, Liv Jacobson is currently appearing in the musical “Midnight: The Cinderella Musical which is on at the Comedy Theatre. To see our students achieve their dreams is one of the best parts of being a teacher/principal.

On the same note, I’d like to congratulate Billy Hooker who has been chosen to represent Australia in the Under 10 baseball team “Aussie Drop Bears”. Billy heads off to Indiana in the USA soon, to play in the Cal Ripken World Series. AMAZING!! There is an article about Billy in this newsletter. I know that we all wish him good luck and a wonderful experience in achieving his dreams.

Over the holidays we had solar panelling installed at the school. This panelling is a direct result from all of the hard work put in by our school community at the fete last year. This will make the school more sustainable and will help offset our large energy bills – so it is the gift that will keep on giving to the school for many years to come. Thank you to every one of you who worked so hard to raise this money, it has made a difference!!

We also had some plumbing work done, the heaters serviced, the staff toilets repaired (this was a large job as the screed under the floor had disintegrated). It was a  hive of activity here!

We have had a large number of enrolment requests for students to attend the school in 2024. It is lovely that so many parents want their child to come to our school, but given the large number, I have made the decision that we will not be taking any students from outside of our catchment area, unless the student is eligible to attend (has a sibling at the school). Please make sure that you submit an enrolment form if your child is attending in 2024 so that we can finalise our numbers. Next year, it seems that the school will have slightly more students than our preferred cap of 125.

I’d like to welcome Cathy Kean to the school. Cathy is replacing Geni Krajewski, who has taken Long Service Leave for the term. A significant handover process took place to ensure continuity for the children, and we as a staff, are supporting Cathy to settle into our routines and expectations. Please contact me if you have any concerns or feedback that you would like to share.

Please feel free to drop in and see me at any time.

Trish

From the Office

Hello everyone,

We hope you all enjoyed the school holidays and were able to have a good rest. We welcome back Mrs Hyland from her long service leave this term, we missed her joyful, enthusiastic and supportive presence whilst she was away, but we are glad she had an amazing holiday in Europe.

Just a quick reminder this week that Absences are to be reported via the school phone absence line, or through the school office.

The Japanese ShowKo Incursion is coming up next Tuesday 18th July, this is now on QKR! so we appreciate if you could please jump on and action as soon as you are able to.

Our annual school production will be held in term 3. Audition scripts have been given to our grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 students. The production is usually performed at the end of the term, so if you are away on holidays at that time, or a large portion of the term, please let us know so that we can work the students roles around this. We will be sending more information home about production soon, and please watch this space for production news throughout the term.

Have a lovely first week back, and we look forward to an exciting and busy term 3.

Building Resilience: Nurturing Strong and Confident Students

This term we are continuing to expand our understanding of how to best nurture confident, resilient students. To support families, here are some resilience focused conversation starters which can help facilitate open and honest discussions at home.

Embrace a Growth Mindset: What made your brain grow today?

Encourage Problem-Solving Skills: What challenge or problem did you work on today?

Promote Emotional Regulation: What is your favourite way to feel calm?

Cultivate Perseverance: What are some responsibilities you have right now?

Lantern Parade

The Lantern Parade was held on in the last week of Term 2, and what a great evening it was.

The students all enjoyed a warm yummy supper of soup, hot dogs and hot chocolate, before starting their parade up Mount Macedon towards the Trading  Post and back.

The students were super excited to showcase their lanterns and the weather held out with a crisp but clear night. Perfect to showcase their creative lanterns which all told a unique story. Have a look below at some of the students parading with their lanterns.

Student News

One of our Grade 3 students Billy is a very talented Baseball player, and  has returned in term 3 with some very exciting news.

During the school holidays, Billy played for the NSW Sea Dawg’s Blue 10U’s at the Down Under Winter Classic tournament, at Surfer’s Paradise Baseball Club on the Gold Coast.

The opening ceremony was on the 1st of July at Sea World, and the games commenced on Sunday 2nd of July - 6th of July. The finals we’re played on Friday 7th of July and Billy’s team were runner’s up (finished 2nd). Billy was the only 10U Victorian at the tournament. What a great result.

The closing ceremony was at Movie World on the 7th of July also.

Then on Saturday 8th of July, it was announced on social media that Billy had been picked as 1 of only 13 kids to represent Australia & play for the Aussie Drop Bears at the Cal Ripken World Series 10U, held at Crown Point, Indiana, USA. Games will be live streamed around the world.

This is the first year the DUWC has had a 10U category at their event & the first time they’ll be sending them to the USA. What exciting news this is for Billy and what a fantastic honour it is to represent Australia! Well done Billy, a huge congratulations, we are all very proud.

Below are some pictures of Billy, his team and some of the fun things he got up to on the Gold Coast.
