Newsletter 30 May 2025

Principal's Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to our Newsletter for Week 6. As we head into the colder part of the year, can I remind all parents/carers that students need to be in school uniform. If you are unable to purchase a school jacket/jumper, please ensure that the jacket/jumper your student is wearing is black. Please refer to our school website for more details around school uniform.

MALENY SHOW HOLIDAY TOMORROW

Can I remind everyone that this weekend is a long weekend due to the Maleny Show Holiday. I am looking forward to watching our Band perform tomorrow at the Maleny Show!

Regional Trials

Congratulations to Rhylan for representing the district at the Regional Rugby League Trials. What an amazing achievement to be selected to represent our district!

Critical Friends Network (CFN)

We hosted the Critical Friends Network within the Glass House coalition last week.

Once a term the CFN team visits a school (one school per term), conduct learning walks in classrooms with students, inspect their learning/bump it up walls, and then conference with the group to give the host school feedback around their next steps in teaching English. Not only does it give the host school valuable feedback, but it also is a wonderful opportunity for others to observe best practice in other schools. We received great feedback from other Principals, Middle Leaders and Teachers which will help to inform our next steps.

School Supervisor Visit

Martin Leach, our School Supervisor visited our school this week. He was very impressed with all the work we are doing around Curriculum and Pedagogy. He said we are doing all the right work not only with teaching & Learning but also with well-being and behaviour management. Thanks to our teaching staff for your hard work and dedication you show each and every day.

Financial Audit

On Wednesday & Thursday last week, our school was involved in a Financial Audit. Financial Audits are conducted in every QLD school, in the same year they have a School Review. This audit looks at financial, excursion, medication and all whole school processes, in order to give us feedback to drive school improvement. We received a glowing report with the highest rating (Self-managed). A huge thanks to Colleen who prepared our school well for this audit.

Farewell to Chappy Mike

Chappy Mike has successfully gained a music co-ordinator’s role within the church. We farewelled Chappy Mike last Tuesday on Assembly and also at a special afternoon Tea for staff and parents on Friday afternoon. We wish Chappy all the best for the future. We are currently working with Scripture Union to recruit a new Chappy.

Rock & Water

Our school hosted a Rock & Water PD for teachers across QLD last Thursday & Friday. A big thank you to Rachel who catered the entire event. The presenters stated that they have facilitated PD all over the country and the quality of the food that Rachel provided was exceptional. Well done Rachel.

P&C / Volunteer’s Afternoon Tea

We held a special afternoon tea today at 2:00pm in the library to thank all our wonderful P&C and volunteer’s. I would like to thank the P&C for all their hard work over the past year. You have really made a difference to our students, teachers and school.

Thank you!

We would like to thank Barry Family Butchers for donating meat to our Kitchen Garden program.  The students loved their Shepherds pies.  We'd also like to thank Dianne from QCWA Beerwah Country Kitchen for volunteering her time each week in SAKG

Have a wonderful long weekend!

HODC Report

English units

This term students have been learning about how to:

· Read, view and comprehend informative texts

· Create informative texts about know topics and topics of interest

Students are beginning to create their informative texts. In years 4-6 this includes a multimodal text that uses digital technologies. In the weeks that come, I will be sharing some of the amazing texts we are seeing across the school.

Incursions and excursions

We have some very exciting incursions and excursions coming up.

We look for incursion/excursion opportunities that value-add to our curriculum delivery in the school. Upcoming ones include:

Term 2, Week 7 and 8 – Interschool sport (soccer). Year 4-6.

Term 2, Week 10 – Life Education – Healthy Harold. Prep to Year 6

Term 3, Week 2-6 (1 hour per week) – Performing Arts. Prep to Year 6.

When we have details confirmed for each of the incursions/excursions, they will be released through consent management on QParents.

Life Education – Healthy Harold was sent out on QParents on Tuesday 13/5. This program costs $7.50 and is subsidised by contributions from our wonderful P&C. Students participate in a module that is age appropriate and linked to their Health units of work. The name of the module each class is doing is on the consent form and more information about them is available on the Life Education website.

Performing Arts – In week 9 of term 3 we will be holding our school concert. In the lead up to the concert, students participate in a Performing Arts unit (dance and drama) that culminates in the performance of their piece at the concert. To assist our delivery of this curriculum, we will have a qualified dance instructor from the local area, Keely, visiting each class for a series of incursion. These incursions will be during weeks 2-6 of Term 3. Consent and payment information will be sent out via QParents.

Mathletics

Our amazing P&C has provided funding for all students to have access to Mathletics. This is an excellent online resource which students will get a login for. They can get assigned tasks from teachers as well as access mathematics games (once set tasks are completed). It also allows teachers to monitor student progress across all of the tasks they complete.

As students complete activities and tasks, they will receive points with certificates generated as different stages. Mr Deady will monitor progress and hand out certificates at different points throughout the term.

Mathletics will be available for access at school and at home. Students will receive a login card from their teacher when they’ve been registered. Because it is on a third-party server and they store information, we require consent to add your child. The information that is stored (and not publicly available) is:

· Name (first and last)

· Year level and class name

· School name

· County, state

· Student responses to tasks (this information allows for teacher monitoring)

This consent is on QParents for approval. Please login and approve or deny this permission. For those not yet on QParents, a paper copy of the consent has been sent home with your child.

Because we have to manually enter each student onto Mathletics, there will be some delay between completing the QParents consent and students being able to access the resource.

Please contact your class teacher or Mr Deady if you have any questions about Mathletics.

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

Guidance Officer

Is your children getting enough sleep?

Sleep deprivation can add up over time; an hour less each night can equal a whole night by the end of a fortnight. Help your child by establishing regular bedtime routines and sleep patterns. There is no one way to help your child become a good sleeper, but every child can become a better sleeper with the right support.

Just like adults, children and teenagers may need more or less sleep than their friends. Children aged six - nine years need about ten to eleven hours of sleep a night; once they reach the age of ten - twelve years, they will need about nine to ten hours sleep and as an adolescent they will need between eight and nine hours of sleep. Of course, there will be times in their lives when they need much more than this: recovering from an illness, a day in the sun, a particularly active day or a late night.

It is easy to recognise the signs of overtiredness or lack of sleep in others; irritability, short-temper, emotional, limited concentration, frequent blinking and yawning, general lack of energy and a tendency to rub the eyes. If your child is suffering from sleep deprivation it can affect their performance at school. They will have difficulty retaining new information and will struggle to complete the simplest of tasks. They will ‘tune out’ when instructions are given and spend a great deal of time ‘day dreaming’ instead of doing their work. This can cause them to fall behind in their work and sometimes be asked to complete it in their own time.

Weekly Focus & Student of the Week/Month

Simultaneous Story Time

On 21st May our school participated in the Simultaneous Story time.  Mr Bowden read the book "The Truck Cat" to our Prep - 2 classes.  In Australia 2, 204,658 students participated and our school was one of 16 632 locations that read the book on this day.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the challenge students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language and additional languages, and are encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts.

This year Beerwah State School student will once again have the opportunity to participate. Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement.

The Challenge starts on 6th May.

For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they are required to read or experience the number of books indicated below:

  • Prep to Year 2—read or experience 20 books.

  • Years 3 to 4—read 20 books.

  • Years 5 to 6—read 15 books.

Experiencing a book includes classroom or at home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to.

The requirement for Year 5 through to Year 9 students to read 15 books rather than 20 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read.

Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability.

P&C Report

P&C Meetings

Meetings are usually held on the third Monday in the month (during term time). The June meeting is scheduled for Monday 16th June at 6pm in the library. We would love to see some new faces, everyone is welcome, there is no pressure to join, just come along and see what’s happening in your child’s school, meet our small but caring team and have a chat with some like-minded people. Or just come along to see what happens at a P&C meeting, maybe you’ve always wondered…. Now’s the time to find out!!

Volunteering

Did you know: Volunteering makes the impossible possible.

Honestly, there are some things that just can’t happen without the help of school volunteers. Many events and projects require parent involvement. Volunteers mean more hands to work alongside students during a seasonal craft.  Volunteers mean more manpower at evening events when staff aren’t required or able to stay. Volunteers mean these kinds of events and projects can happen. For example: if we don’t have volunteers, our children won’t have a school disco.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends, they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

Facebook Page

We try to keep our Facebook page very active with all our notices here along with the Audiri app.

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. It’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification. We’ll also share our tuckshop specials and any meal deal information, so if you don’t see the posts, you might miss out!

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C.

Just find our page and like us to start following. BSS P&C Facebook page

Events & Fundraising

If you have any ideas for new fundraising initiatives, come along to our next meeting to share them. Alternatively, you can email P&C anytime on pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Student Disco

A student disco is scheduled for Wednesday of week 10, however this cannot happen without enough volunteers to run the catering. You don’t need to be a P&C member, but if you’re not a parent, you will need a BlueCard. We will be providing the catering for students (hot dogs, drinks & lolly bags) for the afternoon/evening event,

and we need help with sales and service. It’s a great opportunity to give back to the school and see you child have an awesome time with their friends at the annual school disco.

If you have a couple of hours to spare in the afternoon on Wednesday 25th June, please get in touch, either speak to the friendly ladies in the school office or email pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au for more information and to register your interest.

Entertainment Book

The P&C receive 20% of the purchase price for each Entertainment membership sold. There are always specials on the website so check it out today, it could save you $$$ off hundreds of venues and attractions. Have a look at their website: www.entertainmentbook.com.au for current offers. Don’t forget to find Beerwah Primary P&C Association as your referral so we receive our contribution.

Book Club

The latest book club orders will be delivered once they have arrived at school, then the next issue will soon be with your child. The best way to order is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office.

An extra bonus is that the school receives 15% of all order values to purchase books for our library. Books are such a wonderful addition to any child’s life and there are some amazing prices in the book club.

TUCKSHOP

Do you have time on a Friday to help out for a short time? Are you able to assist in the tuckshop? We need your help! It’s not a job for one person, and even 20 minutes will be a great assistance.

If there is a need to cancel the tuckshop for any reason, notifications will be sent out ASAP and we will postpone until the following week. Please be patient as we work through any issues which may arise. As the tuckshop is run purely by volunteers, sometimes life gets complicated, and we have to swap things about at the last minute.

This term we are offering some delicious favourites and hearty meals as the weather starts to cool down.

The weekly special will be sent out on Audiri each week, along with updates on Facebook. Ordering must close at 6pm sharp on Qkr each Thursday as our volunteers need to shop and prepare. Orders will be prepared for first break Friday. Ordering is only through the Qkr! app, and must be before the cut-off.

If you have ideas or suggestions for meals or inclusions, please get in touch. pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

UNIFORMS

School uniforms are available from The School Locker in Maroochydore.

Ordering is online or in-store, it’s so simple and convenient. Plus, by setting up your free Student Advantage Membership online, you will access special members pricing where applicable.

If you don’t have this information, look at the school website for details.

If you are uncertain of the size you require, one of each size of polo shirt and dress will be available in school to try on. Appointments need to be made in advance, please email janie.bssuniformshop@gmail.com to arrange an appointment.

The P&C have some second-hand uniforms available for sale at drastically reduced prices depending on the condition. Contact Janie at the above email address if you would like to have a look at what’s available.

If you have school polo shirts and dresses that are too small, or if your child is leaving school, please drop in your uniforms to the school office as we will happily re-sell to another family who can use them.

With limited volunteers and fundraising opportunities, this is one avenue that will help all families, and the P&C Association.

QKR

Did you know that Qkr! Can be accessed from any web browser? If you prefer to use a computer or tablet or unable to download the app, simply go to https://qkr-store.qkrschool.com/store/#/home and set up your Qkr! account to access school payments, uniform shop, and tuckshop ordering.
