Lismore South Public School Newsletter

Term 2 Week 4-7

Principal Message

We are excited to roll out the Sentral for Parents app. All families will have received an email giving you instructions to register. The next step will be to load the app on your phone, log in and put in your child's specific access key. Please look out for an email from bounce@messaging.sentral.com.au titled Lismore South Public School.

The Sentral for Parents app will allow families greater access to school information in one location. It will be easy for parents to explain absences, see the school calendar, access permission notes and message your child's class teacher directly. Please feel free to visit the office if you have any difficulties loading the app.

Kind regards,

Larissa Polak

The Resilience Project

Throughout 2023, we are working closely with The Resilience Project to support the wellbeing of our school community.  Our Partnership Program consists of online presentations and weekly lessons for students, professional development for staff, and Parent & Carer Hub (inc. digital presentations) for our parent and carer community. This program is an important part of our school’s effort to look after the mental health of our community.

View the first parent/carers presentation of the series here:

Part 1: Meet Hugh and learn about The Resilience Project - https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

In this presentation, Hugh shares a personal experience about his sister's battles with mental illness. Note: This video contains a story about an Eating Disorder that may be triggering. Please consider this before watching. For mental health resources and support information, visit The Resilience Project’s Support Page.

The Goanna Academy

Greg Inglis presented the MIND ED mental fitness program at Lismore South Public School over 5 sessions. Stage 3 students had the opportunity to listen and learn about Greg's lived experiences in conjunction with both simple physical and mental exercises that can improve mental health outcomes among users. The course focused on:

● Mental health awareness (training and tools)

● Engaging students in conversation about mental health

● Identifying support services

● Engaging in help seeking behaviour and tools to alleviate stress

Greg Inglis’ Goanna Academy is the first accredited & Indigenous-owned mental health education provider in Australia. His mission is to help end the stigma surrounding mental health and improve social capacity to identify, talk about, and manage mental health for all Australians, in particular at risk groups such as Regional Males, Youth, and First Nations communities.

GRIP Leadership Excursion - 2023 Theme: We Lead Everybody

On Thursday 18th May, Stage 3 visited Southern Cross University. Across a full day of presentations discussions and games, students learned how to be an "Others First' leader, through focusing on hearing the opinions of others, helping with the little things, fostering happiness and demonstrating humility.

Walker Learning

The K-2 classrooms have been busy during the morning session, three days a week, engaging in play based learning. Staff participated in a three-day intensive professional development with a focus on embedding this approach into our weekly learning timetable. Students in K-2 engage in play based learning that is directly linked back to what the students are learning in all key learning areas. Students are deeply engaged in their investigations and thoroughly enjoy their "Walker Learning" days. If any families have clean recycled items, our K-2 classrooms would love to take them off your hands. For more information about Walker Learning please visit: https://earlylife.com.au/walker-learning/

Congratulations Cruz

Meet our Lismore South legend Cruz Robinson.  He was selected into the North Coast PSSA Touch football team and recently travelled to Sydney for the NSW State trials.  He played his best, giving his all when he was on the field.  We had the pleasure of watching online some of the games where Cruz and the North Coast boys play against a couple of other teams.  All the Year 5/6 students were so excited for Cruz, cheering him on. Cruz's highlights from his experience were: meeting famous players, stepping past 3 players in opposition and making friends from different schools.

PSSA Knockout Netball

On Monday 15th May, 9 students competed in the PSSA Netball Knockout competition. We arrived at the courts and quickly realised that our opponents, Lismore Public School, were quite a bit taller than we were. We didn't let their height, or the impending rain dampen our spirits.

After a quick warm-up and our team captain Tash winning the toss, we eagerly took to the court. In the first quarter, Tahlia, Amelia and Tash were kept busy in defence while Ellie and Peyton desperately tried to get the ball back down to our attackers, Mia and Ariel.

In the second quarter Nevaeh and Dakota came on with plenty of energy, running around the court attempting to make intercepts and bringing the ball back down to our end. By the third quarter the girls had settled in and were much more familiar with where the various positions could go and how to find space on the court, passing the ball around much more confidently and trying their hardest to keep it in our possession.

At the final whistle, Lismore Public came away with the win, however all the girls showed great sportsmanship and finished the game with smiles on their faces. Thank you to the parents who helped with transporting students to the courts and to the girls for showing such determination and enthusiasm.

Preschool News

Our families had a lovely time last week celebrating Mother's Day and engaging in all the activities with their children. Both the children and their guests left with big smiles on their faces and love in their hearts.

It is exciting to be able to invite our families onsite to celebrate special events together and we look forward to hosting more events throughout the year and rebuilding our connections with community after a challenging couple of years.

Over the next two weeks we will be respectfully acknowledging National Sorry Day (26th May) and Reconciliation week. We will be discussing with our children the importance of recognising our histories and strengthening our resolve to repair and strengthen relationships as we continue to embrace an inclusive future. We look forward to honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through collaborative art pieces that represent both our Preschool groups, the Buninge (Echidna) and Ngumaal ( Goanna) jarjums.

Don't forget preschool photos for the Ngumaal (Goanna)  jarjums  will take place on Thursday 25th of May so please remember to send in your photo envelopes next week. Please ensure your child arrives to school on time and in your preschool shirt if you have one. The Buninge (Echidna) group will have their photos on Tuesday 13th of June.

Ramp Safety

We have continued on with this focus this week as we are still having children displaying unsafe behaviours on the ramp and whilst entering and leaving the school grounds. Please continue to support your children to walk up and down the ramps and stay with you when arriving and leaving the preschool. Educators will also continue to support this learning in the classroom. Additionally if your child is riding a bike or scooter to school please be safe and remember to wear a helmet and walk the bike or scooter once inside the school grounds. Thank you for your cooperation.

Hats and water bottles

This is a gentle reminder for families to please send your child with the tools they need each day to have a positive day. A broad brimmed hat and a water bottle filled with water is a must every day. Please also remember to pack spare clothes and a jumper as the weather is starting to get cooler. Please make sure all items are clearly labelled with your child's name.

Preschool is the best time to teach your child skills that they will carry on through their schooling life so get your children involved and support them to pack their own bags with the listed items above. This will teach them to take responsibility of their belongings and teach self help skills which they will need once they get to big school.

P & C News

At the Lismore Gemfest, 20th & 21st May the P & C hosted a food stall as their major fundraiser for 2023. The Lismore Gem & Lapidary Club kindly offered this opportunity to the school for a second time due to its success in 2021.

The team would like to thank all of the parents, carers, students, grandparents, former students and parents, and community members who were able to assist over the weekend. A special thank you also to our local suppliers including Hutley Bros Butchery, Nimbin Bakery, Farmer Charlies, and Woolworths Bakery who were extremely supportive and accommodating with orders and deliveries.

The weekend was a great success and it was fantastic to see so many new volunteers become a part of the team. All of whom are warmly invited to join the Gemfest Volunteer Celebration following the next P & C Meeting at 5.15pm at the Lismore Heights Sports Club on the 14th June.

Raffle ticket sales were launched for the 2023 signed Melbourne Storm team Jersey kindly donated to the school by Kerry-Anne Cox. Tickets are still available for purchase at the school office for $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00 and will be drawn at the school assembly early next term.

Thank you for a wonderful term.
