Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 20 September 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Regional Athletics Carnival

Drummoyne Public School was well represented at the regional athletics carnival, earlier this week, with 16 of our talented students representing both our school and the Inner West PSSA. This is an incredible achievement, reflecting the dedication and hard work of all our team members. A special congratulations goes to Olivia Doughman and Jake Luciano who have both qualified for the state level in their respective events, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination. Additionally, our Senior Boys Relay team, Isaac, Sam, Xavi and Cameron, not only won their event but also secured their place at the state carnival. Well done to all of our athletes for their amazing efforts – you’ve made us all very proud!

‘Simplifying Feeding your Family’ Parent Workshop

A big thank you to all the parents who attended the ‘Simplifying Feeding Your Family’ workshop on Tuesday evening. As a school, we are committed to supporting our students’ wellbeing and are very aware that a healthy diet plays a crucial role in promoting not only physical growth but also in positive learning behaviours and mental health. By working together with parents, we hope to continue to foster healthy eating habits that support our students' development and overall happiness.

NSW Public Schools State Dance Festival

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the NSW Public Schools State Dance Festival and, even though I am not a dancer myself, I was still absolutely blown away by the powerful performances and the level of talent on display. In particular, I was left feeling incredibly proud of Aydin Dizdar, who performed as part of the Boys State Dance Ensemble, and inspired by the skill, creativity and dedication of students across our public schools. It was a magical evening that highlighted the richness of the arts, and diversity of experiences and opportunities, in our education system.

On that note, I am excited to be heading out again next Thursday night to watch our Stage 2 Choir perform at Sydney Town Hall as part of the Primary Proms, another DoE Arts Unit initiative.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Last Day of Term for Students

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Learning Support

In the early weeks of next term, we will be holding end of year review meetings with families for students who currently have a Personalised Learning and Support Plan.

At the start of the year, one of the changes we made which was well received, was inviting parents and carers to meet with members of the Learning and Support Team, executive staff and class teachers. As planning for 2025 commences, it is important that we celebrate the gains academically, socially and emotionally this year while being open to  transition planning needs. Please keep an eye out for communication in relation to this upcoming meeting.

On the topic of transition, planned opportunities to support students with the impending change will occur in a number of different ways in Term 4, however building on the success of our Term 2 Peer Support Program we plan to hold additional Peer Support sessions using the resource 'Great Transitions'.

Each of these sessions, led by our Stage 3 leaders and facilitated by staff will help students of all ages prepare for change by connecting with their peers and developing understanding and skills to respond positively to change.

Class of the Week - 5/6H

Class 5/6H have been exploring volcanoes in science and discovered that for over five centuries, volcanoes have captivated artists as a subject. After studying various examples of volcano-themed artwork across different styles, we were inspired to create our own interpretations.

Student recount

When I was doing public speaking I was so nervous but I was so excited!

Thank you to all the people who encouraged me. It was pressure but to have that as an experience in my life was amazing.

Everyone did so well and I was so proud of myself and so were lots of people in my family.

It was a big achievement for me - I loved it. This is one of the things I will never forget. It's a great memory. All my friends were there to help me be my best and I was!

Kindergarten Excursion to Berry Island Reserve

Last Friday Kindergarten went on an adventure to learn about Aboriginal Peoples' connection to Country in our local area. The educators from the Koori Kinnections program led us in a range of interactive activities at the beautiful Berry Island Reserve, which has been a treasured fishing, hunting and camping site for Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years.

The students had a wonderful day.

  • Sam from KB said, "I loved seeing the ochre painted on my friends."
  • Jess from KB said, "I liked seeing all the trees."
  • Bertie from KN said, " I liked doing the walk and listening to how you can use the different plants."
  • Finn G from KW said, "I loved when I saw a termite's home."
  • Matilda from KW said, "I loved the bush walk."
  • Ayana and Elliott from KN both loved, "climbing on the rock and going around the mountain."

Healthy Heart Talk 1/2M

Today, Sharnee (Phoebe's mum) came to our classroom.  She is a EP (exercise physiologist). That is her job. We had a talk about how fast people's heart beat goes. Did you know that a kid's heart beat beats when exercising at 150! Sharnee told us these things to keep our heart healthy:
  • quiet time reading
  • water
"Water is really good for us", she said. After that we did PE, remember the heart beat things, well we did that. We ran, skipped, had a break, so we can cool our hearts down.

Pheobe

Miss Noach is a very good person. She is like a doctor, but she is an Exercise Physiologist.

Alex T

We were lucky enough to have a special visitor.  Sharnee told us that exercise is really important. She works for an Exercise Physiologist which is like a sport scientist. She told us how much our heart beats in rest it pumps 80-90 and when we are doing exercise it pumps 150 times. You also have to drink water. Thank you for reading.

Lost Property

Have you been wondering where your child's expensive all weather jacket/batman jumper/ sequined cardigan got to after the last mufti day? It was probably in the lost property box, but with an enormous amount of other items so your child couldn't find it, even if they did try!

We would love to return things to their owners. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, Gillian & Simon E, everything with a name on was returned last week. They have washed all non school uniform items and these are now ready to collect. Please get in touch with the office if you recognise any of these items to arrange prompt collection.  The remainder will be donated to Anglicare at the end of the school term.

And remember, please label label label everything!
