The Brush Telegraph

Week 7 – Term 2, 2023

Message From The Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

COVID-smart MEASURES

While the community continues to live with COVID-19, NSW Health has advised that the unpredictable nature of the virus will continue to present a health risk to the community, especially during the winter months while other respiratory illnesses circulate.

As a response, our school will continue to operate with our baseline COVID-smart measures in place throughout this term to minimise transmission while prioritising student and staff wellbeing. These include a combination of layered safety measures such as:

  • Staying home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms. Students and staff are advised to stay home until they are well, even if they have a negative COVID-19 test result.

  • Boosted day cleaning of high-touch areas in our schools.

  • Strongly encouraging up-to-date vaccinations for our students and staff, including COVID-19 booster shots and flu vaccinations for anyone eligible.

  • Maintaining natural ventilation with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use.

  • Continuing to provide RATs and other hygiene products to our school community, free of charge.

On behalf of our school, I want to thank you for your support in helping to keep our students, staff and community safe.

SCOTTISH FESTIVAL

Thank you to all the parents and community members that supported the P&C stall last weekend at the Scottish Festival. The funds raised support our students and school. We appreciate all who gave up their time and energy.

NAIDOC Activities Day

Our school is excited to announce our upcoming NAIDOC Week celebration. On this special day, students will have the opportunity to rotate through various activities including arts and crafts, storytelling and games. We are fortunate to have some Indigenous members of the community volunteering their time to share their knowledge and skills with our students. Our NAIDOC Activities Day will be held sometime in Week 10. Students will be advised when a date has been confirmed.

3/4B Happenings

Students in 3/4B have been engaging in math lessons with a focus on measuring length. They have really enjoyed the hands-on learning activities which have included:

  • measuring areas of our playground using trundle wheels;
  • measuring the flight distance of paper planes;
  • measuring static jumps using metre rulers.

The paper plane with the longest flight was made by SJ with a distance of over 20 metres. The longest static jump was achieved by George with a measurement close to 1.8 metres. We have enjoyed having our math lesson outside in the beautiful weather.

In English, 3/4B have been studying the book Sophie Scott Goes South. The book tells the story about a young girl's adventure to Antarctica. Students have been creating informative texts about an ice breaker ship, The Aurora Australis. They have enjoyed creating sketches of the ship to support their writing.

Thank you

Annual WBPS Athletics Carnival

A fortnight ago, WBPS experienced a wonderful athletics carnival bathed under a beautiful late autumn day. The 8 to 12 year olds participated in a traditional athletics day with 100m, 200m, 800m, shot put, long jump and high jump activities. The 5 to 7 year olds enjoyed fun tabloid activities and a 50m sprint. The 5 to 7 year olds will have a small assembly, under the Cola at 2.55pm this Thursday afternoon,  8 June to receive their ribbons for the 50m sprint. The primary carnival presentation date will be announced when trophies are received.

Taree Eisteddfod

Infants Choir

Last Tuesday 30 May, 36 Year 1 and 2 students travelled to the Manning Entertainment Centre to represent Wingham Brush at the Taree Eisteddfod. They were the largest group in the Infants Choir section and they received a third place overall. They looked absolutely spectacular in their choir shirts and their singing and behaviour matched. The adjudicator described the performance as confident, enthusiastic and an enjoyable rhythmic presentation. Mrs Hayes was very proud of the children who have been dedicated and practising hard all year. She said their voices are very sweet and expressive and she loves the way they tell the story of the song. Congratulations Infants Choir.

Senior Choir

The Senior Choir performed two songs at the Taree District Eisteddfod on Wednesday 31 May. They were the smallest group on the day but were well received by the audience and judge. They received two awards: Highly Commended and the Encouragement Award. Congratulations!

PSSA Netball

Round 1

Wingham Brush Public School took on Wingham Public School in an exciting game of netball, with both teams showing fairness, honesty and courage. Wingham Brush won with the score being 24-4. Congratulations girls.

Round 2

The Senior Netball Team took on an experienced Pacific Palms PS team in Round 2 of the PSSA Knockout. While the girls didn't get the result they wanted, they should be very proud of the resilience and determination that they showed. Well done.

PSSA Basketball

On Monday 22 May, the Wingham Brush PS basketball team travelled to Saxby's Stadium in Taree for round 1 and 2 of the PSSA basketball tournament. The first game we played against Wingham Public School and the score was 42-4 their way with David scoring our points. After the first game the girls' team from Wingham PS asked if our girls could help to fill in for them because they were short on players. Of course we said yes! In that game Wingham PS was defeated by Old Bar PS. The second game The Brush played was against Old Bar PS and this time we were much improved and showed great team work to compete the entire game, with the score finishing 44-24. David, Marlie and Bailey scored the points for us. Overall our team had a great day and we showed improvement each game. We had lots of fun!

PSSA Knockout Soccer

Wingham Brush PS played against Wingham PS on Monday 29 May in the State PSSA Knockout Soccer Competition.

The boys played their hearts out and had wonderful moments that gave the parents reason to cheer. Unfortunately they were soundly beaten on the scoreboard. Credit to the Wingham PS boys as they were humble with their win. The boys' quest is over.

The girls game was a tighter tussle with our opponents scoring the first two goals. As the game progressed, our running game came to the fore and they manufactured some goals to match Wingham PS at 3 all with 5 mins to go. Late goals were kicked by Maddie M and Marlie M to take out the win 5 to 3. The girls will now play against Cundletown PS. It will be their home game.

Fathering Project

Wingham Brush Public School held another successful Fathering Project event on Wednesday 31 May. Brandon Swan (Crossfit Games athlete and recent Torian Pro Team Winner) was the special guest; he took the group through a simple yet effective workout and spoke about the positives that being active has had on his role as a dad.  Thank you to those who came along and took part.
