ZIG ZAG Public School

As Term 2 draws to a close, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what has been 11 weeks of rich learning experiences and memorable achievements.

As a new member of the Zig Zag Public School team, I have been incredibly impressed by the high quality of teaching and learning programs, the positive behaviour and commitment of our students, the strong support of our families, and the wide range of extracurricular opportunities available to our children.

This term has been filled with exciting experiences. Our students had the opportunity to prepare for and perform in a dance production, experiencing what it is like to be part of a large-scale performance in front of a big audience. We've had our Cross Country and Athletic Carnivals. We have also celebrated students and teams representing our school at district, regional and state sporting competitions.

Students have embraced creative problem-solving through our Game Changer program, working together to solve real-world challenges that impact our school. Our Stage 3 students have also been involved in designing and building solar-powered cars. They have nurtured vegetable gardens, developed their cooking skills, welcomed visits from Responsible Pets, participated in an Aboriginal Languages program, and enjoyed engaging performances and educational presentations.

Term 3 is shaping up to be another exciting and busy term. We are excited to be offering a breakfast program in Term 3 with the support of local businesses. This program is to ensure all students start the day with the energy they need. Some families need extra support, some families are in such a mad rush that breakfast is an after thought and some children are on a bus for an extended amount of time. Whatever the reason- a fueled body helps the brain to focus and we think this will be a great addition to the supports already in action at Zig Zag!

We are looking forward to welcoming 21 new enrolments for 2027 as they begin their transition-to-school activities. Puffing Billies will commence in Week 2, running every Tuesday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. We will also welcome staff from Lithgow High School, who will be supporting our students as they prepare for the next stage of their learning journey.

Public Education Week promises to be a highlight, with plenty happening on Thursday, 7 August. Mid Term, we will also host our Book Fair and Book Parade, while the P&C has organised some fantastic fundraising events, including the Christmas in July Trivia Night and the annual Pie Drive.

I am also looking forward to our annual trip to Sydney later in the term - stay tuned for more details!

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank all of our families who attended the recent parent-teacher interviews. We were delighted with the outstanding attendance and greatly appreciate the wonderful support shown for our cake stall Stage 3 Excursion fundraiser.

I wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break. I look forward to welcoming all students back for the start of Term 3 on Tuesday, 21 July.

K/1 students have been exploring the concept of mass by comparing objects and identifying which are the heaviest and the lightest.

In phonics, they have enjoyed learning about the /j/ sound and celebrated their learning by making a tasty jelly treat.

In Music, students have been learning to maintain a steady beat and are developing their understanding of tempo through the use of percussion instruments.

In 1/2 Waterworks, students have been learning different ways to collect, analyse and interpret data. They have explored how data can be used to draw conclusions about the chance of something happening. Students thoroughly enjoyed collecting data on the class's favourite party food (pizza, ice cream, doughnuts or fairy bread). We concluded that 1/2 Waterworks was 50/50 on having ice cream or pizza at our class party, while having doughnut or fairy bread was unlikely.

For an end of term treat Year 3/4 competed in a Geograhy Kahoot on their computers revising the states and capitals of Australia.

They have also been learning Mapping skills in Geography this term.

After enjoying a fantastic netball clinic last week, the students in 4/5 have been putting their new skills and knowledge into practice during games together.

They have been developing their throwing and catching skills, which they have been refining in PE, while also learning the many rules of the game. There has been lots to remember, but even more fun along the way.

Year 5/6 have been exploring the exciting world of podcasting! They've learned about the purpose of podcasts and identifying their intended audiences. Working in pairs, students created their own podcast plans on topics they’re passionate about. Now, they’re beginning to bring their ideas to life by recording their podcasts using Google Vids.

We harvested some pumpkins and have planted some winter veggies. The kids have also been busy cleaning up areas of the school and getting beds ready for more planting.
