Principal's Updates

Swimming Carnival

Last Friday our fantastic swimmers competed at our annual swimming carnival which was held at Merrylands aquatic centre. Congratulations to our wonderful swimmers, who all had a great time at the carnival and swam their best. Good luck to those students who have qualified for the Zone PSSA carnival which will be held on Wednesday 5th March.

Parramatta Eels Blitz

This morning the Parramatta Eels visited our students as part of their season launch. The players spoke to the students about showing respect for yourself, to others and spaces they learn, play and live in. Our students asked our guests thoughtful questions such as ‘What was your journey to becoming a professional footballer?’ ‘How do you feel before playing a game?’ ‘What does it feel like to win?’. Thank you to all our students for being wonderful audience members who displayed respect to our visitors.

Ramadan: A Time for Reflection and Community

As we approach the holy month of Ramadan, we would like to take this opportunity to recognise its significance for many of our students and their families. Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It encourages compassion and gratitude, fostering a deeper connection to one another and our shared values.

We understand that some of our students may wish to engage in prayer during this special time. A prayer room will be available at lunchtime for students who would like to pray.

If you have any questions or need further information, please feel free to reach out to Mrs Rana.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and reflective Ramadan.

Iftar Dinner

This year we also invite all families to join us on for our Iftar Feast to be held on Thursday 13th March from, 7 – 8:30pm in the school hall. The school will be providing a range of juice and soft drinks. We ask that all families please bring a suitable halal dish to share. Last year was such a success, we look forward to seeing as many families again.

K-2 Assistant Principal Updates

Early Stage 1 Learning

Early Stage 1 students have begun phonics based lessons where they are being explicitly taught decoding and encoding skills. This phase of learning is about connecting the sounds (phonemes) to the matching letters (graphemes). Decodable Readers Australia introduce letter-sound correspondences in a sequential order that enables early word building (using common consonant and short vowels first and then progressing from simple to complex). Please see below some of our student work samples.

Works Samples

Stage 1 Learning

Stage 1 students have been engaging with the text 'Our Island' by the children of Gununa to develop their writing skills. Students have learnt how to use nouns, verbs and prepositional phrases in their writing. They are beginning to learn about and write recounts. Students have enjoyed reading and engaging with the text to develop their understanding of why authors use literary techniques and devices in their writing. Please see below some of our student work samples.

3-6 Assistant Principal Updates

Building Independence in Learning: The Gradual Release of Responsibility in Years 3-6

In Years 3-6, the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model helps students become more independent in their learning while still receiving the support they need. Here’s what it looks like in practice:

  • I Do (Teacher: Show Me) – The teacher leads the lesson by modeling how to complete a task. For example, the teacher might demonstrate how to solve a math problem, read a text, or write a paragraph. Students watch and learn the steps needed to complete the task. This phase helps students understand the process before they try it themselves.
  • We Do (Teacher and Student: Help Me) – The teacher and students work together to practice the skill. For example, the teacher might ask students to solve problems as a class or discuss the text together. The teacher offers guidance and support, helping students if they get stuck. This phase helps students apply what they’ve learned with some assistance.
  • You Do (Student: Let Me) – In this phase, students are expected to work on their own. They now have the skills to complete tasks independently, but the teacher is still available to provide feedback or help if needed. Students show what they’ve learned by solving problems, answering questions, or completing projects on their own.

Throughout this process, students gradually take more control of their learning. Some students may need to move back to earlier steps if they need extra practice. By the end of Years 3-6, students will be more confident and independent in their learning, ready to apply their skills in different subjects and situations.

5/6T Learning Figurative Language

This term, students in 5/6T have been learning about figurative language, including similes, metaphors, and personification. These tools make writing more interesting and help students to better understand literature.

Similes compare things using “like” or “as” (e.g., “as brave as a lion”), metaphors make direct comparisons (e.g., “the classroom was a zoo”), and personification gives human qualities to non-humans (e.g., “the wind whispered”).

By using these techniques, students can make their writing more creative and clear. This helps them become stronger readers and writers, using vivid descriptions to engage their audience. Check out their fantastic simile work in the photo below!

5/6T Similes

Mathematics in 4/5S

This term, students are strengthening their understanding of place value, a fundamental concept in mathematics. Using tools like MAB blocks, number charts, and hands-on activities, they are learning how digits change in value depending on their position. A strong grasp of place value helps students confidently tackle addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, building a solid foundation for more advanced maths skills!

Mathematics in 4/5S

Writing in 4/5S

This term, 4/5 Silver is diving into narrative writing, focusing on key elements such as orientation, character development, and plot structure. Understanding these criteria helps students craft engaging stories while strengthening their overall writing skills. By exploring different storytelling techniques, they enhance their creativity, vocabulary, and ability to express ideas clearly—essential skills for success in English and beyond!

From the Office

RPS Preschool Enrolments for 2025 are now open.

General Guidelines

Public preschools enrol children for one year only, the year before they start school.  Children can enrol from the beginning of the school year if they turn four years of age before 31 July that year.

Priority is given to:

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children
  • children living in low socio-economic circumstances
  • children who are unable to access other early childhood settings due to financial hardship

The Principal will then offer enrolment in the following order:

  • children living within the school's catchment area
  • children living outside the catchment area but have siblings at the school
  • other applicants

For further information, please go to the NSW Department of Education link below:

Enrolment in a public preschool (nsw.gov.au)

Our office staff are happy to be of assistance with any further questions or with the enrolment process.

Change of Details

Please contact the office by email rydalmere-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au if there has been a change to any of the following to your child/children's details:

- change of address.

- change of email.

- phone numbers - mobile or home/work.

- change of emergency contacts.

- Additional/change of medical circumstances

Lost Property

Our PBL expectations of being Safe, Respectful Learners support our students in taking responsibility for their own belongings at school including jumpers, hats, lunchboxes and drink bottles.

To support your child and the school in maintaining lost property to a minimum level we ask that parents or carers clearly label all items brought to school with your child's FULL NAME.

The most common items to lost property include jumpers and hats, lunchboxes and drink bottles, and personal treasures. Students have access to lost property during the school day to search for misplaced possessions. When possible, labelled items in the lost property will be returned to students. Due to the limited space for lost property, unlabeled and unclaimed items are regularly disposed of.

Lost property is located at the front of the office.

P&C Report

We’ve had a great start to the year with our first general meeting held a couple of weeks ago. In our first meeting, we agreed that our 2025 fundraising efforts would focus on the purchase of home readers for our K-2 students, as well as continuing to raise funds to upgrade the playground equipment.

We welcome everyone to attend our next general meeting, where amongst other items, we will finalise the date for our major fundraising event in Term 4.

Please note that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been rescheduled to 6:30 PM, on Monday, 17 March. The regularly scheduled general meeting will follow the AGM at 7:00 PM, as planned. Both meetings will take place in the School Library and online via Teams. The Teams link will be shared prior to the meeting.

Volunteers Needed for Meet the Teacher BBQ – 5 March

First up, some fantastic news: ten of our amazing women have stepped forward for the election jobs opportunity. (Way to go, ladies! 🎉) They'll be hearing more about next steps very soon.

Here's something that made our hearts smile – our English conversation group had a wonderful adventure at Ermington Library on February 24th. For five of our participants, it was their very first time stepping into a local library, and they didn't just visit – they walked out with their very own library cards! Talk about opening new doors (and books)!

Now, splash into this exciting update: our learn-to-swim program, run together with Parramatta Aquatic Centre and Royal Life Saving, is making waves! It's absolutely heartwarming to see our families conquering their fears and discovering their inner mermaids and mermen. And here's a little secret we can't keep – more funding is on the horizon! If you're from a multicultural background, over 3 years old, and want to learn swimming, keep your eyes peeled for a free 10-week program coming in terms 2, 3, or 4.

Mark your calendars! We're celebrating International Women's Day on February 28th, and we've got something special planned. Thanks to the generous folks at Officeworks, our ladies will be unleashing their creativity with pre-outlined canvases, paints, and brushes. Who knows? We might discover the next Frida Kahlo among us!

And for all our tech-curious ladies out there – we're teaming up with Boronia Multicultural to offer free Artificial Intelligence sessions. They're happening on three Tuesdays (March 4th, 11th, and 18th) from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Spots are still available, so reach out to Seetha to secure your place in this exciting learning journey.

Come join us – there's always something new to learn and someone new to meet at the Hub!
