From the Principal

We are now well into Term 1 with all students and classes settled into teaching and learning programs each day. It has been a busy term so far, both in and out of the classroom. Last week, we enjoyed a visit from Cathy Brennan, the Executive Director of Metropolitan North Public Schools. Cathy had the opportunity to tour the school grounds, visit some classrooms and talk to teachers and students. She was so impressed with our school and commended us on the positive, engaged and enthusiastic learners she saw in every classroom. A special thank you to Matias & Amber, our Vice Captains, who did a wonderful job welcoming Cathy and telling her all about how we inspire excellence at Telopea Public School.

Telopea Public School upgrade

Last week we hosted a community information session with Schools Infrastructure on the Telopea Public School upgrade. The design plans for our new hall were on display, with an opportunity for community members to ask questions related to this exciting development. Thank you to all who were able to come along. For those who could not make it, the posters are on display in the office foyer. Please feel welcome to come and have a look. Community members can also stay updated on the progress of the development, by visiting this webpage:

Student Success

Congratulations Pippa & Youssef, our School Captains, who are representing our school on the Director's Student Representative Council. On Monday this week, they attended the first meeting at James Ruse High School, along with other school leaders from our network of schools. They had the opportunity to discuss issues that matter to them and to contribute to the shaping of future directions for our public schools.

Our Year 6 student leadership team spent a day at the Department of Education office in Parramatta as part of a student leadership development program. Thank you to Mrs Tadros for accompanying them and congratulations to our student leaders for their conduct and in embracing this opportunity for leadership development.

Another congratulations goes to the 11 students who represented our school at the Zone Swimming Carnival last week. It is so wonderful to see the progression of our students into the representative levels of the various sporting programs. Two years ago, we sent 1 student to the Zone Carnival. To have 11 students qualify this year is a wonderful achievement for the school. Congratulations Telopea!

Student Attendance

A reminder as we head into the last month of Term 1, about the importance of attendance at school every day. Our whole school attendance rate currently sits at 90.1%. At our school we strive for at least 95% attendance for every student to maximise learning and life outcomes. Where possible, parents and carers are encouraged to schedule appointments and travel outside of school hours. Please reach out to me, or the class teacher if you need assistance from the school in improving your child's attendance rate. Keep an eye out soon for an exciting end of term attendance challenge.

Harmony Day

Harmony Week is an annual celebration that recognises diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

At Telopea Public School we will be celebrating Harmony Week on Wednesday 18th March 2026.

On this day, students are encouraged to wear some orange accessories (eg: t-shirt, hair ribbon, socks etc) together with their regular school uniform, to represent social communication, mutual respect and support for cultural diversity. Students may also wear traditional, cultural or national dress to celebrate and share their heritage.

On the day, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of culturally diverse activities such as language, games, art, music and food.

We look forward to celebrating diversity and unity together on Harmony Day.

School Photo Day

Our Annual School Photo day will be held on Wednesday 1st April 2026.

You can now view packages and place an order online via https://telopea-p-nsw.msp.photos/Photos/

Orders must be placed prior to the photo day.

Please note that if your child does not have permission to publish as a preference at school, students will not be included in any group or individual photos. If you wish to change your preference, please contact the school office.

Celebrating Our P&C and Getting Involved in 2026

Dear Parents and Members of our School Community,

On Wednesday 4th March we recognised P&C Day. I would like to sincerely thank our wonderful P&C for their dedication, generosity and hard work throughout last year. Their commitment to our school community continues to make a meaningful difference for our students.

In 2025, the P&C raised over $7,200 for the school (expenses not removed from this figure) and successfully secured a $4,500 grant to support the development of an outdoor classroom in our school garden. They also advocated for improved road safety, funded new library books, fruit trees and a greenhouse for the garden, and provided valued support for the Year 6 Market Day and Farewell. These achievements reflect an enormous amount of volunteer time, collaboration and care for our school.

Looking ahead, the P&C’s 2026 fundraising focus will support environmental and sun-safe initiatives within the school, the continued development of our arts and music program, the purchase of new books for the library, and building connections with local organisations and businesses to support the growth of our school.

Events such as our upcoming Hot Cross Bun Meal Day and Mother’s Day Stall, along with the ongoing Breakfast Club program on Monday and Thursday mornings, rely on the generosity of volunteers. I warmly encourage families to consider joining the P&C and volunteering to help with these activities. Whether you can assist regularly or occasionally, every contribution is valued and appreciated.

I hope you’ll consider getting involved with our P&C—it’s a wonderful way to meet other families, stay connected with school life, and play an active role in enriching the experiences we provide for our children.

Thank you again to our dedicated P&C members for all that you do to strengthen our school community.

Warm regards,

Erin Dooley

Student success

Congratulations to the students who have visited the principal's office in recent weeks to celebrate the achievement of a learning goal.

Student Attendance

At Telopea Public School, we strive for excellence in student attendance to maximise learning and life outcomes for all students. The school will communicate regularly with you about your child's attendance. Congratulations to these classes with the best attendance this term:

Week 2 - 5/6 Emus

Week 3 - 5/6 Emus

Week 4 - 1/2 Quokkas

Week 5 - 4 Kookaburras 99.5% - HIGHLY COMMENDED!

Week 6 - 1/2 Quokkas 98.88% - HIGHLY COMMENDED!

Zone Swimming Carnival

Ten students proudly represented Telopea Public School at the Merrylands Parramatta Zone Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 4th March. All students tried their best, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and supporting one another throughout the day. Many achieved personal best times and showed great improvement from last year. It was a wonderful achievement for all involved and a great day enjoyed by everyone.

Leadership Orientation Day

The Telopea Public School leadership team attended a Leadership Day at the Department of Education building in Parramatta, alongside seven other local schools. The day centred around the theme of leadership and provided students with a range of engaging and interactive experiences.

Throughout the day, students explored what makes an effective leader and participated in activities designed to strengthen their own leadership skills. They collaborated with peers from other schools, took part in team-building challenges, and enjoyed a variety of fun, hands-on tasks.

A true highlight was hearing from guest speakers - players from the AFL Giants - who shared their insights about leadership, teamwork and resilience. They answered thoughtful questions from students and even joined in with some of the activities, making the experience even more memorable.

Overall, it was a fantastic day filled with learning, connection and plenty of fun.

Clean Up Australia Day

Thank you to the Telopea Public School Student Representative Council for organising a successful Clean Up Australia Day event. Our school is looking so tidy and loved. Well done to all the students who took part in this event and for pledging to keep our school beautiful every day.

NRL League Tag Gala Day

What a fantastic time our students had at the League Tag Gala Day! Each class was split into teams to join in a fun and competitive game of League Tag, using the skills developed in our clinics last year. A huge thank you to the NRL for hosting this free event and giving our students another opportunity to develop fitness and teamwork skills through fun.

NRL League Visit

Another shout out to the NRL and the Parramatta Eels team for including us in the School Blitz earlier this term. We enjoyed a special visit from some 1st grade NRL players who spoke to the students about wellbeing. They discussed the importance of physical wellbeing through keeping active, eating nutritious food and getting plenty of sleep. They also spoke about mental wellbeing through staying connected to culture, having positive relationships and using emotional awareness. The students also had the opportunity to ask questions of the players to understand more about their journey into first grade NRL. The visit was engaging, inspiring and lots of fun.

Student Voice

On Monday 9th March, we attended the Carlingford Network SRC meeting at James Ruse High School with Mr Hird, the Director of the Carlingford Network of Schools. We learned about how different schools manage their leadership teams. Each student got to talk about their school and ways in which they can improve. We enjoyed meeting other students, getting new ideas and having the opportunity to have our voice heard. We are looking forward to the next SRC meeting in Term 2.

Library News

This term we have been celebrating our diversity and some of the different cultures we have at Telopea Public School.

We have created an Acknowledgement of Country with our Aboriginal students and read books learning about culture and country.

We have then celebrated Chinese New Year by making colourful lanterns and reading Mr Kwok’s Kite.

We also celebrated Ramadan by reading The Very Best Doughnut by Fatima Abdel- Fattah and making colourful mosques.

Please remember to assist your child to return books each week so that they can continue to read at home.

Thank you

Garden News

Our garden is in full swing and students are working hard to get our autumn and winter garden beds ready and seeds planted. We filled a new garden bed ‘lasagne style’, layering cardboard, sticks, compost, green waste and new soil, ready to plant our new seedlings. The highlight of the term so far has been the Bunya nut lesson and tasting. We all learnt about Bunya Dreaming and got to taste the delicious nuts which Mrs Andonenas prepared. We have harvested bananas and decided that they are the best bananas we had ever tasted! We are also practising to pause, observe and be mindful and aware of our surroundings. Students observed (without touching!), a lot of mushrooms growing on the mulch in the garden and observed the seasonal changes such as the dew on the plants in the morning. Everyone is working so hard and enjoying being back in the garden!

Schools as a Community Centre

Dear Telopea PS and SaCC Communities,

Welcome to March....now we've settled into Term 1 Telopea SaCC has much to report.

Sing Rhyme and Story Time

Delivered every Tuesday 9:45am in the SaCC rooms. Bring morning tea and enjoy social and play time afterwards.

Tuesday 17th February we celebrated the Chinese New Year, the year of the horse. We shared the story Maisey's Chinese New Year book on the big screen, we enjoyed learning a new dance CNY Kungsi and of course distributed red envelopes with money (chocolate money) to the parents/carers and children.

Do you know what this tradition symbolises?

The red envelope symbolises good fortune, joy and celebration, prosperity and protection from evil spirits. The money inside represents blessing for prosperity and success, wishes for health and longevity and transfer of luck from the giver to the receiver.

Supported Playgroup

Join us for playgroup every Friday 9:45am to 12:00noon in the SaCC rooms. Bring a piece of fruit to share for morning tea.

Playgroup is the perfect place for you to spend quality playing and learning time with your children birth to five years.

Baby Play and Connect

Join our community with your baby up to eighteen months every Wednesday from 10:00-12:00 in the SaCC rooms.

Recently we have been learning about the importance of spending quality time, reading and talking with your baby. Babies are so clever and rely on their primary caregivers to teach them life skills. Babies and young children learn through play, by watching their peers and through adult role modelling. Neuro connectors like dopamine (reward, motivation, pleasure), serotonin (mood, sleep, well-being), acetylcholine (memory, muscle movement), glutamate (learning and memory) are essential to 'connect brain cells that allow thinking, feeling, moving and remembering. In short, you are your child's first teacher..... spend quality time talking with, reading, playing with your baby.

School Uniform

Students are encouraged to wear the correct items of uniform each day including the school hat. Please see the photos below for acceptable uniform items of clothing during summer. The uniform shop is open on Wednesdays from 8:30am for purchasing. Alternatively, parents can place orders through the School Bytes Parent Portal.

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

School student travel information for parents and students

School Travel Passes

Applications are now open for 2026 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2026.

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply for a new card or update their existing card as soon as possible. Students who receive a notification that their School Opal card is expiring need to re-submit their details.

If a student has lost their School Opal card, they will need to apply for a replacement cardNote: a new card will not be issued if an existing School Opal card is updated online – you must submit a replacement application if a School Opal card is lost.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Terms of Use

Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.

This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.
