Term 2 - Week 2 (5th May 2023)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Respect

We value others, their property, the environment and ourselves

Gospel John 14:1-12

This Sunday’s Gospel shows Jesus explaining to His disciples to not be worried or upset about His departure. He encourages them to believe in God and believe in Him. There are many rooms in His Father’s house and Jesus is going to prepare a place for them. Jesus tells them He is the way, the truth and the life, no one goes to the Father except by me. The theme of being present and being absent is very strong in this gospel. The discussion about Jesus and the Father being one is part of this theme. Jesus is God present in the world. God has come to dwell among the people. When Jesus speaks of preparing a place in the Father’s house, it is a reference to preparing the disciples to ‘live’ in God; to dwell in God just as God has dwelt in the people.

Constable Care

Constable Care came to St Mary’s on Tuesday and conducted two different performances for our students. It was fantastic to see how all the children related to the topics and how they will go about being better citizens in our community.

Alphabet of Awesome Science

The Alphabet of Awesome Science excursion on Wednesday was a fantastic opportunity for the students of St Mary’s. Even the trip to Cummins Theatre was exciting with a police escort followed by a greetings from local shop owner as they passed. The students’ behaviour was outstanding and we even had a picture with the stars of the show!

Thursday Morning Run Club

Thursday morning run club started this week with close to 30 students participating in activities and a running session. Thank you to all the parents that attended to support their child with this initiative. Looking forward to more students attending in the coming weeks.

Principal’s Message

We are now in Week 2 of the term and we have noticed some students making significant progress by building upon habits and routines. These include completing all homework tasks to the highest standard, reflecting on the day’s experiences, reading aloud to an adult or being read to and practising number facts.

Sharing stories helps your child’s development in many ways.

Reading and sharing stories can:

  • help your child get to know sounds, words and language, and develop early literacy skills.
  • learn to value books and stories.
  • spark your child’s imagination and stimulate curiosity.
  • help develop your child’s brain, ability to focus, concentration, social skills and communication skills.
  • help your child learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make-believe’.
  • help your child understand new or frightening events, and the strong emotions that come with them.
  • help your child learn about the world, their own culture and other cultures.

Sharing stories with your child doesn’t mean you have to read from the book.

Just by looking at books with your child and talking about them, you can be a great storyteller and a good model for using language and books. Your child will learn by watching you hold a book the right way and seeing how you move through the book by gently turning the pages.

Reading stories with children has benefits for grown-ups too. The special time you spend reading together promotes bonding and helps to build your relationship with your child. https://raisingchildren.net.au

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,
