Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Introduction

Dear Families,

One of the most wonderful aspects of St John the Baptist School is the sense of community. The support, care and friendship our families provide to one another along with our school is truly special and something for all to be proud of.

We currently have a wonderful sense of community and social justice being demonstrated through Amelia B and Hannah B as they fill key ring orders while raising funds for Caritas. Last year with the support of their family the girls made scrunchies that were equally well supported. It is wonderful to see such a great sense of social justice in action.

Next weekend we have the SJB Family Camping Weekend at Warburton. At this time we understand there will be over 100 members of our community enjoying a weekend away together. We wish everyone a fabulous time away together.  A big thank you to the Davies, Amey & Brady families for their work in creating such an event

On the weekend we had many volunteers attend Saturday’s Working Bee to keep our Naturescape, grounds and school looking sensational.

We would like to thank the following families for their wonderful sense of community and support of St John’s;

Burns, Serrao, Mahoney, Hall, Dutton, Croning, Hendricks, D’Silva, Simmons, Fus & Vesey

We sincerely appreciate the time, expertise, generosity and wonderful sense of community that is continually demonstrated throughout SJB. Thank you.

Thoughts and Prayers for Father Thomas

Our thoughts and prayers are with Father Thomas and his family as they come to terms with the passing of their father, Kuruvila Kumbuckal. Father Thomas and his family are taking comfort in knowing that their dear father is resting peacefully with our Lord after a period of illness. Father Thomas has flown to India to be with his family at this most difficult time. May our prayers provide Father Thomas with strength and comfort throughout this time.

2 Timothy 4:7-8

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

Working Bee

On Saturday afternoon we were most fortunate to have a number of our community come together to provide their time to maintain our beautiful playground naturescape. We were then most fortunate to be joined by many families to maintain and care for other aspects of the playground.

Our focus for this day for the morning included:

  • Spreading mulch in the playground

  • Spreading sand in the sandpit

  • Clearing cobwebs

  • Weeding the naturescape area

  • Trimming some lower branches on the trees  (small branches)

  • Laminating Mathematics resources

  • Open Days for 2027 Prep Children

Prayer Services - Thursday 2 April

Parents and friends are warmly invited to attend one, or more of our Holy Week Prayer Services.

This year, we will lead our community by following in the steps of Jesus' journey and remembering this important part of our Catholic faith and tradition.

Our students will use scripture references and role play as they re-enact the last week of Jesus' life. There will be opportunities to listen, pray and reflect as we walk together. We will commence from the base of the ramp alongside our church and complete our walk at the outdoor amphitheater situated in the new playground.

    Hoping you can join us.

Introducing “The Village Circle” – A Community Gathering – Hosted By Brooke W

As parents, many of us know the feeling that raising children was never meant to be done alone. It truly takes a village — yet in our busy lives, that sense of village can sometimes feel missing. As one of the parents in our school community, I would love to help create a small space where families can connect, support one another, and build that sense of village together. From this idea, The Village Circle was born. The Village Circle will simply be a relaxed and welcoming gathering for parents from our school community. It’s a chance to chat, share experiences, make new friendships, and support each other through the beautiful and sometimes challenging journey of raising children. Young children are warmly welcome to come along and play while we connect. There’s no pressure, no expectations — just an opportunity to build a stronger sense of community and support among the families in our school. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy being part of, I’d love for you to join me (and my daughter Elora-4yrs) for a cuppa on Fridays. Because parenting is easier, and far more joyful, when we do it together.

MACS Creative Arts Exhibition – You’re Invited!

We warmly invite all families to attend the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Creative Arts Exhibition as part of Catholic Education Week.

This year’s exhibition celebrates the theme “Christ Beside Me: Walking in the Footsteps of Saint Patrick.” Students across the Archdiocese have explored ideas of faith, courage, community, and the presence of Christ in our everyday lives through their creative work.

Our school is proudly represented in this wonderful exhibition, with collaborative artworks from Years 1&2, 3&4, and 5&6, as well as Susie Dow, who graduated in 2025. These pieces were inspired by the natural beauty of the Dandenong Ranges and Ferntree Gully and were originally created for our school art show. It is exciting to see our students’ work included alongside over 500 artworks from more than 90 primary schools and 30 secondary colleges.

The exhibition officially opened on Sunday, 15 March and will remain on display until Saturday, 21 March.

We encourage all families to visit the exhibition and experience the incredible creativity and faith expressed through the artworks. It is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the talents of our students and the wider Catholic school community.

We hope to see you there!

SJB Mother's Day Stall - Seeking Community Talents to Promote

Last year we had a wonderful response from families in the community sharing their talents with homemade Mother’s Day gifts for our Mother’s Day Stall. These gifts were all beautifully made and were greatly enjoyed by all. This year we have had some lovely offers of candles, home grown plants and homemade cookies.  We warmly welcome additional homemade gift ideas for our Mother’s Day Stall.

We would love the chance to recognise the talents of our community whilst contributing to a wonderful day. If you are interested in contributing please email the office at office@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au by Friday 27th March. Your details will then be passed on to the P & F Mother’s Day Stall team.

Harmony Day - Friday March 20th

This year we will celebrate Harmony Day with a prayer service to be led by the Year 1/2 level.  Students may wear cultural dress from their cultural background, the colours of the flag of their cultural background or a touch of orange on this day in celebration and recognition of Harmony Day. Students may choose to wear from the options outlined above or their school uniform.

    SJB Family Camping Weekend

We warmly welcome all families to come together for a weekend of fun at the annual SJB family camping weekend.  Whether it is cabins, caravaning, camping in a tent, the aim is to include all.

We would love to see everyone who is able to join.

For communication purposes families attending are encouraged to scan the code below. One of our team members will then communicate with the group in preparation for the weekend.

    NAPLAN

This week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

The NAPLAN assessment tasks consist of the following assessment tasks:

    • Reading

    • Writing

    • Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)

    • Numeracy

NAPLAN is one aspect of St John the Baptist’s assessment and data collection used to monitor student progress and growth.  NAPLAN data is used in conjunction with school based data, student work samples and anecdotal records. All of this information is reflected upon in the planning of learning and teaching, as well as assessment and reporting.

We ask families to support our students as they prepare to undertake NAPLAN by encouraging them to give it their best.  This is all we ask of any of our students when entering all tasks.

Community Gift - Yamaha Baby Grand Piano

A member of our local community has made contact with our school with a most generous and sentimental offer. Rachel has reached out to offer her family’s Yamaha Baby Grand Piano to a family who are able to give it a good home.  The piano has significant sentimental value to her and she would love to see it go to a family who will enjoy it.

If you are interested in giving the piano a new home please email the office.

Wishing all our students and families a wonderful week.
