TOKSAVE - Week 7 Term 3, 2025

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

Exam Preparation

Next week the Grade 8 students will sit their third mock exams to identify areas of focus for teachers and students to work on as we approach exam time. The Grade 10 students are busy working to improve areas of improvement identified through their last mock exams.

Students will continue their regular Saturday sessions from 8.30am-10.30am for the next two weekends. Grade 10 Holiday Remedial lessons will run for 2 weeks of the holidays from 22 September to 3 October. Grade 8 Holiday Remedial will run from Monday 29 to Friday 3rd October. It is very important the students attend and are on time for these classes. Ms Yip will send home a letter outlining the timetable for holiday exam preparation sessions.

Change to Term 3 Calendar

With the Governor General and the National Executive Council declaring Monday 15 and Wednesday 17 September as public holidays in commemoration of the 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations, the last day of term 3 for LIS will change from Thursday 18 September to Friday 12 September.

Students will attend school on the morning of Friday 12 September for a dress rehearsal of our Independence Day celebrations and then go home to rest from 11:00am. All students will then be required back at school to put on face paint and bilas (teachers will advise each class of times). A note for those participating in the bilas parade will go home outlining instructions for those students.

Please note that due to limited parking townsite families are asked to walk to the celebration. Parents from out of town are asked to park across the road from the LSSC.

Please also note with the changes to the school calendar, student folios will now go home at the start of term 4 with Parent / Teacher Interviews postponed to term 4, week 2. Thank you all for your understanding on these matters.

Swimming Carnivals

Thanks to all the parents and carers who supported our annual swimming carnival. The students' enthusiasm and participation was great to see. Thanks to Miss Judith for organising the swimming carnivals and to all teachers and parents who facilitated the swimming lessons. Both carnivals were full of excellent performances of swimming and great sportsmanship.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

Due to the busy end-of-term with our Independence Day celebrations, Parent / Teacher Interviews will be held on Monday and Tuesday afternoon of Week 2. Student portfolios will be sent home in Week 1.

GEM Chats

GEM Chats are a part of our Wellbeing program (The Resilience Project) that we are implementing this year. They are based on each of TRP's attributes - Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. Teachers use them in class and we encourage families to find time at home to also do some GEM chats.

GEM chat consists of 2-5-minute activities that can be done at any time that suits your family. They are a great way to get students thinking about GEM outside of school time and importantly, they practise strategies regularly to improve their mental health. Each week, there is a different GEM chat in the toksave. I encourage all parents and carers to find time to discuss these together with your child/children.

Friday Assemblies

Parents and wantoks are welcome to join us each Friday at 8.10am for our Friday assembly. This week, it was the Swimming Awards assembly and next week, it will be the Music assembly.

Kind regards,

Ms Langusch.
