Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 2 Issue 4

Principal's Message

I would like to extend a massive congratulations to Year 2, Room 4 who recently “signed” a song about the alphabet. Auslan is our new language at Newman Primary School this year and to such young students so confident signing this song was incredible. Well done to each one of you!

Congratulations to everyone who has been receiving a merit award. You all continue to work hard each day and impress your teachers. You all should be immensely proud of yourselves. I would like to send out a massive thank you to our P&C who continue to provide and serve the morning tea for your celebration! If any parents would like to jump onboard and put your name forward to provide a treat for assembly, please reach out to our P&C. Your help in this area will be appreciated.

We have been very busy since our last newsletter. We had our whole school Colour Run. This afternoon was filled with colour, smiles and laughter. A massive thank you to BHP who came along to assist throwing the colour at our students. I am sure most of the workers were enjoying this way too much!!!!

We have had a visit from Foodbank Nom who did cooking with 4 of our classes. Parents, all the students were little chefs. Cutting, mixing, cooking and doing the dishes. This was an unbelievably valuable experience for all students involved.

We held our Cross-Country event for students in Years 1 – 6. Such an enjoyable day. Participation was voluntary and most students decided to run. Fantastic sportsmanship and resilience were displayed throughout the morning. Well done to Parnka who now have their name on the new shield.

All reports K-6 will be emailed using the email address we have on file. If you wish to have a hard copy, please email newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au so I can ensure these are downloaded for you. Please note, the link you will be emailed is only ‘live’ for four weeks, so you will need to download your child's reports for future reference.

Student reports will include an attendance comment which clearly states the WA Education Department’s view on the impact of student attendance on learning. This percentage is based upon student attendance at the end of Week 7, Term 2. The following wording has been adapted from the Department documents and all teachers will be using this in student reports.

96 - 100%

<N> should be commended on <p> exemplary attendance. This has provided <o> with optimum learning opportunities this semester.

90 -95%

<N> has had satisfactory attendance this semester.  This has given <o> the best opportunity to be a successful student.

80 -89%

<N's> attendance of less than 90% has placed <o> at risk of not accessing optimal learning opportunities and meeting <p> educational potential.

0– 79%

<N's> attendance of less than 80% has placed <o> at high risk of not accessing the optimal learning opportunities and meeting <p> educational potential.

We know many families have been helping to promote reading through the Premiers Reading Challenge. As a school we are using this medium to focus on the importance of reading. If you have not done so, I encourage you to sign up and share the joy or reading with your family. If you need assistance or would like the classroom teacher to help sign in, please contact them. Reading is one of the biggest predictors of success for our students and we are proud of what our readers have achieved already with the challenge.

As a school, we still have some upcoming whole school events. Two of these events include open invitations to our parents/carers and wider school community. The first event on 25 June being our whole school learning journey. All classrooms will be open from 5:30pm - 6:30pm. I encourage you to come along and look at the fantastic work that has been happening in your child's classroom. Please note this is not a time for parent interviews. A separate time will need to be negotiated with the classroom teacher. Our P&C will be cooking up a storm with a sausage sizzle. These will be available to purchase for dinner from the school canteen. Keep an eye out for information coming out soon.

On Thursday 3 July, NPS will be celebrating NAIDOC. Keep an eye out for additional information coming home soon about these 2 events!

We still have 2 busy weeks to go until the end of term. The teachers will be keeping our students working hard right up until the very end. You will then get your 2 weeks holiday. Time to relax and unwind.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very safe, upcoming term 2 holiday break. Enjoy the time with your family and keep them busy!

See you all back at school on Monday 21 July 2025.

Foodbank WA nom! Schools Incursion

“Foodbank WA nom! Schools Incursion.

On Wednesday the 11 June and Thursday the 12 June, Rooms 1, 2, 21, and 22 had a nom! Schools incursion. They learnt about healthy eating, did a fun nutrition education activity, and cooked up a storm! All four classes cooked a few healthy and delicious recipes together, and all the kids got to sit with their classmates to enjoy a feast of their tasty creations! They showed good interest as we discussed food and nutrition, excellent team working and cooking skills, and bravery to try new foods with their peers.

Students were all given recipe books to use at home, and we are looking forward to what they make next with their awesome cooking skills!

If you want to know more about Foodbank WA, go to https://www.foodbank.org.au/?state=wa for more information. “

Positive Behaviour Support

It is hard to believe we are nearly halfway through the year. A lot has happened with our Positive Behaviour Support over this last semester. Some major events to note are

-        Getting our new signs in the Quad

-        Having our first and second whole school rewards

-        The introduction of our Positive Behaviour Support skits at Monday Parade

-        Many individual and class rewards given

This is only a small peek into what has happened over the semester. It has been wonderful to see the students showing our three core values at inter-school and whole school events showing how wonderful our students are.

Here are our expected behaviours for the upcoming fortnight:

Weeks Five and Six expected behaviour: “We treat others with kindness.” This falls under the value of Show Respect.

As of the end of Week Two, our school has earned a total of 8386 tokens:

Be Responsible: 2315

Show Respect: 2106

Strive for Success: 3965

If you have any questions about Positive Behaviour Support at Newman Primary School, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.

Thanks for your continued support.

Wishing you a wonderful and safe holiday and see you in term three.

The PBS Team

ELP 0-3 Program

Newman Primary school runs an on-school site Early Learning Program for children and families aged 0-3.  This program targets children’s readiness for school by offering a coordinated approach to engage children and their families with important services and early intervention to address areas of developmental concern.

Come down to Newman Primary Room K9 in the Early Childhood area on Thursday and Friday from 8:00am - 10:00am to meet Miss Lisa Mahoney and learn about the importance that language plays in your child’s developmental journey.

This program is proudly sponsored by BHP and there is no cost to families who wish to attend.

Attendance and Absences

Newman Primary School transitioned to a new system, all Attendance SMS messages will now come from a new contact NewmanPS.

The new system will notify parents, guardians, and caregivers of unexplained absences or late arrivals.

The new system started on the 4 June.  It will send parents an SMA on their mobile phone when their child is marked absent without an explanation.

Parents should delete the old Absentee SMS number to avoid confusion.

Parents will get this SMS with the link if their child is marked absent without explanation.  Parents should use this link to add attendance about their child's absence.  Please note that the link will be valid for only 48 hours.  Do not reply to this message via SMA as the school will not receive this.  The school will receive your response via the link provided.  Ensure the phone is connected to an internet data plan or has WIFI access to use the hyperlink.

If your child is absent again without prior explanation, parents will get a new one-time link.

If parents do not use the link provided, they can notify the school of their child's absence via telephone or email (newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au).

If you have any questions regarding the Attendance SMS Communication, please call 9154 3900.
