Monday 5th February 2024 Term 1 Week 2

From the Principal

Welcome to 2024!

Welcome back to school for a fantastic year! I would like to welcome all new and returning families to our school for 2024. A particular welcome to our new Kinder families and those who have joined our school for the first time. We are looking forward to having a fantastic year, sharing the learning journey with you and your child. We have lots planned for this term including school photos, swimming carnivals and a welcome BBQ for families next week.

Classes and teachers and support staff:

Our classes have been finalised for the year and students met their teachers and new classmates today. Our teachers spend a great deal of time to get the mix of personalities right for a class group and I thank them for their time and effort in designing the best classes possible. If your child is not in a class with their best friends, we encourage them to build their resilience and develop new friendships, as they will continue to do throughout their life.

Our fantastic support unit has had a makeover and will now go by the new “SHINE”. We cannot wait to see those wonderful students SHINE in 2024.

We welcome Mrs Emma Moses to WBPS in 2024. Mrs Moses will be working with students and teachers to support the enrichment of High Potential and Gifted students (HPGE).

Communication:

Communication is very important to our school. If you need help with something or have a question, there are several ways you can contact us.

For general enquiries:

Call the school office on 49488129, visit the office during school hours or email warnersbay-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

To speak with your child’s teacher:

Email them through the Sentral parent portal or call the school office and leave a message for them to contact you. Please note, teachers are in class all day and on duty at recess and lunch times. While they will be prompt in replying to you, please understand that they may not be able to contact you back immediately.

You have a concern about your child:

In the first instance, contact your child’s teacher. If you have further concerns, please contact the Stage Assistant Principal as listed below.

Kinder – Mrs Parsons

Stage 1 – Mrs Burr

Stage 2 – Ms Hamilton

Stage 3 – Ms Patrick

Support Unit – Mrs Ward

If you have significant concerns, please contact the school office to speak with me.

Phone/ smart watches:

A reminder that students who bring phones to school need to drop them off at the school office on arrival for secure storage during the day. Students can then collect them as they leave each afternoon. If your child has a smart watch, they must be on School Mode during the school day or handed in to the school office for safe keeping. If a student is found using their phone or smart watch (other than to read the time) during the day, the device will be confiscated until the end of the day.

Competitor’s Swimming Carnival:

Our zone qualifying swimming carnival will be held this Thursday at Swansea Pool. Those students who are attending should be at school by 9:00am for departure to the pool. We will be holding a carnival for all primary students later this term.

Exciting News - The Resilience Project

The Resilience project (TRP) is launching in 2024 at WBPS. This is an engaging whole-school well-being program which aims at creating happy and resilient students through teaching the GEM principles…Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. The students will learn about researched-based practical strategies that will help develop their emotional intelligence and overall well-being. More information will be sent out this term explaining how you can help at home and be a part of this valuable initiative.

Library News

2024

2024 is looking like a very busy year in the library here at WBPS.

The Principal’s Reading Challenge

The Principal's Reading Challenge will again replace the Premier’s Reading Challenge with it beginning on Monday of Week 3. Students can still complete the Premier’s Challenge but will be responsible for entering their own reading directly online and notifying me to ensure I validate the entry in August. Any questions about the recording of books for the Premier’s Challenge can be directed to me in the library.

The Annual Book Parade

The Annual Book Parade, combined with Education Week and Grandparents Day, will be held in Term 3 with more information to come.

Book Fair

Our Book Fair is happening in Week 7 Term 4.

Author Visit

Our visiting author this year is the amazingly talented author and illustrator, Sami Bayly. Information will be shared closer to this event in Term 3.

Book Club

Book Club Issue 1 closes on Wednesday, 14th February. All orders will be processed after the closing date and will be sent home with students as soon as they arrive at school, normally late the following week. Scholastic encourages parents/carers to place orders via their Loop Ordering System (Loop) but payments can also be made through the school’s office.

We are still waiting for the printed copies of this issue to arrive at school but it can be viewed online here. Once the physical copies arrive, all students will receive theirs.

All commission from Book Club sales goes towards new books for the library collection which all students can borrow.

Finally a reminder that all students who did not return books in 2023 have had borrowing privileges suspended until the book(s) are returned. Students also require a library bag for borrowing each week.

A Message from Newcastle Transport

Welcome back to another school year.

Newcastle Transport school services for 2024 resumed Tuesday 30 January in line with the Department of Education 2024 term dates.  We have pulled together some important information to ensure a smooth return to school:

Information for parents and students

Parents and students can plan their trip to school by following these three easy steps:

  • Visit http://newcastletransport.info/plan-your-trip/school-services
  • Type your school name into the search field
  • Select your school bus route to download the PDF timetable
  • For parents and/or students that have questions about school services or need help planning their trip, they will need to contact our Customer Service Team on 131 500, or use our customer portal on our website at newcastletransport.info, so we can get in touch immediately.

    Tap on and off

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind schools and parents to encourage school students tap on and tap off when using school bus services. This data is important in determining the school bus services provided to schools and low patronage could prompt a review of the service.

    New to the school bus?

It’s important that school children have confidence travelling to and from school by bus. This includes not only when on board but getting to the bus stop and getting off the bus. Check out some resources and tips we have designed to educate students about travelling by bus at https://newcastletransport.info/primaryschools/

We look forward to working with you to get students to and from school safely in 2024.

    Warm regards,

    The Newcastle Transport team
