Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 4 Newsletter - Friday 24 May 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

2025 Kindergarten Enrolments

Enrolments are now open for Kindergarten 2025. If your child turns 5 before July 31 2025, they are eligible to start school next year. To help us with planning, we would appreciate if our local-area enrolments could submit their applications as soon as possible. Please spread the word about our wonderful school and community and let your friends and neighbours know that the process for 2025 enrolment is underway.

Debating

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of accompanying one of our Stage 3 debating teams to their debate against Leichhardt Public School. Despite not coming away with a win, I was very pleased to see our students showcase their critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills. A big thank you to Ms Jacqui Hill for providing our students with this opportunity and for the time and effort she dedicates to preparing our debating teams for these debates.

Representative Sport

I have also been proud to see many of our students put their hand up to take part in some of the representative sport opportunities available to them at Drummoyne Public School. We have had Stage 3 students trial for PSSA zone and regional teams with three of our students making it into metropolitan AFL teams and driving down to Albury this week to compete against regional teams from across the state. We will also be sending students to trial for touch football and soccer teams in the coming weeks and, just this Tuesday, we had two teams of students attend a netball gala day at Heffron Park in Maroubra. Finally, good luck to our Zone Cross Country representatives who will be proudly representing our school at the Inner West PSSA carnival at Campbell Park on Wednesday. I hope to be able to make it down there to cheer our runners on.

Reconciliation Week Assembly & Activities

We have some very exciting activities planned for our students next week for Reconciliation Week (27th May - 3rd June). This week serves as a dedicated time to reflect on and acknowledge the rich cultural heritage and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, promoting awareness and education about the significant contributions they have made to Australian society. Throughout the week, our students will take part in various activities and discussions to learn about the importance of reconciliation and the need to build meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and recognition. Later in the week, we will also be welcoming Aunty Theresa to the school to run some Reconciliation Week activities with our students based on this year’s theme, “Now More Than Ever”. I look forward to welcoming many of you to our special whole-school Reconciliation Week assembly on Tuesday 28/5 where we will be officially presenting our new Acknowledgement of Country to you, our school community.

Regards,

John Nguyen

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu, colds or coughs are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of our 3 values.

  • Thomas P-L - 1/2J

Week 4

This week in the Peer Support session, children will be focusing on the importance of support networks and the role that friends play in each other’s lives. Debating Team Report

This week Drummoyne debated against Leichhardt Public School in our first round, with a win for the negative team. The topic was ‘All schools should be coeducational.’

The affirmative team, the Lyons, were the away team, with Isaac N as 1st speaker,  Ava A as 2nd speaker, Theo K as 3rd speaker and Oliver B as team advisor. They argued that being in a coeducational setting improves social skills and prepares students for the real world. They also discussed gender bias and gender stereotypes. The Lyons drove their case home with a compelling team line, ‘Enhance all in Co-ed’s call’. Congratulations to all four students for their outstanding teamwork,

The Hawkes were the home team. As the negative, they focused on the fact that not all schools should be coed as it is a matter of choice. They pointed out the advantages of single sex schools, discussing improved student outcomes, reduced gender stereotyping, tailored teaching approaches for different genders and general wellbeing. The Hawkes’ compelling team line was ‘Use your voice for freedom of choice’. Congratulations to 1st speaker Shireen R, 2nd speaker Aria S, 3rd speaker Aydin D and team advisor Maeve O for a  great debate.

Many thanks to Mr Nguyen and Ramona Spiteri for providing transport. Also, thank you to our chairperson David, time keepers Eme and Keira and meeters and greeters Sophie and Sophia.

Netball NSW Schools Cup Gala Day

On Tuesday 21st May, 20 Stage 3 students attended Netball NSW Schools Cup Gala Day at Heffron Park in Maroubra. It was a fantastic day with the students developing their skills each game and showing a huge improvement in skill and teamwork over the course of the day! We had 2 teams of 10 with a mix of boys and girls in each team. They played 4 games each and had similar results.

The Green team won 2 and lost 2 with one loss being a very close match with only 2 goals in it. Sophie 5/6C said “it was intelligently fun” and Hayden 5/6C said “it was fantastic to learn how to find space on the court!”

The Red team also won 2 and lost 2 with lots of fun had across all the games! Shireen 5/6H said “it’s a great experience and fun to be out playing with your friends”. Theo 5/6O said “It was a great day and I learnt that bounce bounces are good to use in the circle”. Delilah 5/6O said it was really fun and made me want to play more, maybe even join a weekend club”.

During the day Netball NSW were scouting for boys to join a male training camp to build their skills to trial for the State team! Congratulations to Luca 5/6H, Henry 5/6C, Kieran 5/6O and Hayden 5/6C for being picked! Goodluck at the training camp and remember to keep having fun with netball!

A big thank you to Amber and Eveyln for volunteering to come and help manage the teams on the day - thanks for withstanding the cold wind all day!

I can’t wait to do it all again next year 🙂
