Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

Our assessment and reporting phase of the semester is well and truly underway with our Semester 1 report cards sent home via your personal email address on the last day of this term. Please register your email address with the front office as soon as possible, if not already completed via your enrolment forms. We are always happy to supply paper copies of your report cards. Please let the front office staff know directly. If your family requires your child’s report card to be emailed to two adults in the family, please also let us know.

As always, our teachers encourage you to make an appointment with them to discuss your child’s learning. This can be organised directly with your class teacher at a mutually convenient time.

I’m really disappointed to report that we have had an increase in break ins across our school, mostly on the weekends. If you see suspicious activity in or around our school grounds, please call the police. This is incredibly important as we enter the school holidays. Our cleaning team are often cleaning up vapes and alcohol that has been left in the school grounds before our students arrive for the day. I’m sure you all join me in thinking that Beaudesert State School children deserve their school to be looked after by our community.

This term we have seen as increase in incidents of online bullying and harassment in the upper school via social media, particularly Tik Tok, Facebook and Snap Chat. It is against the law for students, usually under the age of 13, to have access to this social media content and the decision falls to the parent to remain actively supervising their child and to cease access. Students do not have access to these platforms using school devices. Bullying and/or harassment via social media is to be reported to the police, however, in the event we have any bullying or harassment that occurs in school, please report to your class teacher. Our annual ThinkYKnow program, recently completed in Term 1 this year, in conjunction with the Australian Federal police and our local police station, helps to raise awareness of using social media safely when they are of age, but we need our parents and community to continue to raise awareness and set boundaries on its usage at home.

As we near the end of the term, it is timely to remind our community that we do not tolerate physical or verbal aggression in any form at our school, between any parties who are here. Our students are always taught to solve problems with their words and to seek assistance from an adult where required. It is never appropriate, nor is it tolerated, that a child is physically hurt at our school. Please help us by reiterating this message at home.

A reminder that our school day begins at 8:40am and finishes at 2:50pm. Please ensure your child arrives to school on time to maximise learning and to notify the office on 5540 1111, not teacher, if you are running late for pick up.

In Term 3, our local Show Holiday will fall on Monday 14th August. There is also a Pupil Free Day on Friday 1st September. Our school will not be open both days.

In conjunction with Camp Australia, I am really excited to announce that our school will be providing holiday care via Camp Australia for the June/July school holidays. This is called the ‘Rocketeers program’. The operation times will be 6.30am - 6.00pm and the cost to families will be $58.00 per day, however, with the maximum CCS applied this can be reduced to $8.73 per day depending on each family’s personal circumstance. All Beaudesert State School students are most welcome to attend. Further information will be released via Camp Australia in the coming weeks.

I am seeing increased amounts of students bringing toys to school. Please remember, that toys are not permitted at school as they are often lost, stolen or broken. This also includes stuffed toys, trading cards, specifically Pokemon and sports trading cards. Our teachers are encouraged to confiscate these items and bring to the office for parent collection at the end of the school day.

A reminder that all mobile devices must be signed in at the front office upon arrival to school. This includes, but not limited to, iPads, mobile phones and watches with the capability to ring and/or take photos, regardless if this mode can be switched off prior to coming to school. The devices are safely stored and are easily collected from the office at the end of the day. If you need to contact your child through the day, you can do so by contacting the front office.

Our school continues to have confirmed cases of COVID and Influenza. All staff and students who are symptomatic must remain at home until well. I understand this contradicts our messaging around attendance and every day counts, however, I’m sure you can appreciate the need to maintain a healthy school environment for all. We ask that you return your child to school as soon as they are well again to minimise the disruption to their learning. We ask that all families avoid non-essential time off school so that we maximise learning every day. The below diagram outlines the impact on a student’s learning when they are absent.

Thank you for a wonderful Term 2. Please enjoy your winter school holidays and we will see all our smiling faces again when school returns on Monday 10th July.

2024 Prep Enrolments

We are now looking at Prep 2024 enrolments, if you have a child or know someone who has a child born between 1 July 2018 - 30 June 2019 enrolment forms are available at the school office or online at https://beaudesertss.eq.edu.au/ . Attendance

This year attendance has improved but there is still a lot of improvement that can be made. Students need to be coming to school every day to ensure that they are receiving the best education possible. I understand that we are now entering cold and flu season but please contact the school if your student is absent, this can be done via text message, email or a phone call.  Congratulations to the Year 6 cohort who are leading the way with attendance this year.

The winning class will be having a pizza party at the end of term

The attendance data for the year to date is currently at 89.41% it would be amazing if by the end of the term the data was above 90%.

NAIDOC Showcase

NAIDOC Week

Each year, South East Region hosts a NAIDOC Week exhibition to showcase the great work done by schools within the region, to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives within the classroom and school community. Beaudesert SS has participated in this showcase for the last few years and we will once again be creating a booth to proudly display our work in this area.

The exhibition is being held at Gainsborough SS this year and is open to the public from June 13-15. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

DATE CLAIMER: Beaudesert SS will be holding a special parade to celebrate NAIDOC Week and the achievements of our Indigenous students on Wednesday 14th June, starting at 1.45pm. Parents and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Senior School Classroom Reports

Year 3

Year 3 students have really enjoyed their integrated English, HASS, Media Arts and Design & Technology units. They have learnt lots of interesting facts and listened to and written stories about soldiers and the Australian diggers. The students also enjoyed learning about all the different types of celebrations, and understood the importance of commemorating events. The students were very intrigued about the idea of conscription and many thought it was not fair on the young men, their families or communities, however, they enjoyed designing their own conscription poster on PowerPoint, manipulating technology to make their posters stand out at the same time making sure they were incorporating period features.

Mr Pellinkhof organised a wonderful excursion into town too! He took all of the year 3 students and their teachers on a historical walking adventure to the local cenotaph and Harry’s Haunt museum. It was a fantastic morning, across two weeks, and all the students really benefited from the experience. They came back eager to continue their English writing on a retell from the perspective of a soldier based on a book, Anzac Biscuits by Phil Cummings

Mrs Wallace also came on board and integrated her Design and Technology unit. The students learnt about modern and traditional technologies for food production and technologies, needs and opportunities, the making of Anzac biscuits, safety, and sustainability.

A terrific end to semester two!

Year 3 Teachers

Year 4

4A

We have had a huge Term and have worked very hard. We took inspiration from our very own artist, Miss Stacie and created a story about our Mununjali totems. We have also created some matching artwork, and even got a special visit from Aunty Jerry where we got to share our story with her and hear about the importance of respecting our Elders and their knowledge.

Assessment has been in full swing lately and we have written some really disgustingly awesome chapters for our Twit’s novel. Our editing skills have really improved and the text specific vocabulary we have used is terribly gross, and perfect. Check out the chapter ‘Glass Eye Gone Gooey’ from one of our amazing Authors in training.

We have been measuring everything in sight for Mathematics this term, from the length of our desk, to the weight of a sharpener, to how many right angles we can find in our classroom. We have also enjoyed science experiments with 4B recently and investigated weathering and erosion on various landscapes. In HASS, we compared rules and laws, and have thought about games we could create with rules that would be fair to a group.

4A have taken on the role of Eco Warriors for our school again this term. We are proud to say that we are filling the bins for containers for change more and more, and we continue to work hard helping clean up across the school.

The countdown is on for camp next term! Can’t Wait!

4B

What a busy and jam-packed term it has been!  I want to thank my students for their hard work and motivation across all their subjects these last few weeks!

In English have been reading Roald Dahl's The Twits and have enjoyed writing a new chapter from the perspective of Mr or Mrs Twit, playing a prank on the other.  Students have used similes, alliteration, direct speech and a range of sentence structures to capture the reader.  We have proudly read aloud to 4A and to each other for peer feedback.

In Mathematics students have been learning about three-dimensional shapes and their properties.  They have learned the difference between regular and irregular two-dimensional shapes, can name and measure different angle types and demonstrate lines of symmetry.

In Science students are learning about the rock cycle and the effects of weathering and erosion.  They have enjoyed making predictions and conducting experiments on different types of environments.

In Art students have been introduced to artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.  They have used different mediums to create artworks and understand the difference between realism and abstract pieces.  Students are very excited to be creating a Mununjali artwork to reflect a story written collaboratively as a class.

Year 5

Throughout Term 2, students have been learning about space and the solar system as part of our Science unit. This started with a visit to the Starlab dome earlier this term, to engage students and build foundations for the topic. As part of our class lessons, the learning included identifying the planets and other celestial bodies in space, discussing the early and ongoing exploration of space, and exploring technologies designed for use in space that we now use on Earth in everyday items. Students have really enjoyed this learning and had fun researching information and creating displays to share their knowledge with their classmates and teachers. We anticipate they will be able to transfer this learning when completing their assessment task over the next week.

Friday afternoon activities – over the last semester, students have enjoyed participating in a variety of activities on a Friday afternoon.  This has enabled students in Year 5 to engage with students in other classes and participate in activities such as sport, art, boardgames and technology.  Students have enjoyed spending time with their peers from other classes, and look forward to the activities.

Reminders about before school - please remind your child about being in the right place before school each day. Students are to drop their bags off to the designated bag racks outside their classroom.  It is important that they then move directly to the undercover area where they will be actively supervised. Students should not be outside classrooms prior to the 8:40 bell.

Looking forward – In Term 3, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to take part in an excursion called Eureka Gold Rush.  This excursion will take place in week 9, but students need to start planning their costume for the day as dressing up gives a more realistic feeling to the times of the gold rush and enhances the experience on the day.  Some character suggestions include: teacher, baker, general store keeper, blacksmith, entertainer, coach driver, squatter, digger, assayer, banker, claims officer, tent maker, butcher, sly grog shop owner, trap (constable, sergeant), governor.

PLEASE NOTE:  NO BUSHRANGERS – also NO hire costumes as both the children and the costumes may get quite dirty on the day.

Year 6

The majority of year 6’s have just enjoyed a fantastic week at Tallebudgera Beach Camp. They tried their hand at kayaking and bush walking, braved the waves and body boarded at the beach, were flung around on a toboggan behind a boat, tested their team skills with multiple problem-solving tasks and were trapped inside an escape room!!

It was a great time to see students blossom into leaders and being responsible for their learning as they faced challenges and personal discoveries as they explored their world.  We enjoyed morning beach walks where we watched the sun rise and climbed to new heights…literally on the leap of faith at Paramount rock climbing.  We were welcomed by Uncle Steve, an Indigenous elder, and told special stories about Gowonda and how the headlands were created.  Many students reported that they were so appreciative of being able to go on this camp and experience all the fun, take home treasured memories and enjoy the great times that we all had there.  It was definitely a huge highlight for both students and teachers and we can’t thank everyone enough for making it happen.

Needless to say, they arrived home Friday weary and craving a home cooked meal or a Zinger burger!!!!

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

Another term is quickly flying by. Some of the highlights over the past few weeks include:

Chappy Week – a massive thank you to all those who helped celebrate Chappy Week. What a privilege it is to support our school community.

Year 6 camp – I love joining the year 6 students and staff each year on the Tallebudgera Beach camp. We had the most perfect weather and it was great to see the students grow throughout the week and the big smiles on their faces throughout the activities. Well done year 6.

Bella Girls groups – we have run two Bella Girls groups this term with the help of Mrs Blake and Mrs Morgan. It has been so lovely seeing the girls enjoy coming each week, learning how to embrace who they are and seeing them develop good friendships. We are looking forward to our upcoming lunches.

All Stars Friendship – Tuesday afternoon is lots of fun with a group of Year 4 students for our All Stars Friendship group. So far this term we have looked at the values of friendship of; being inclusive, listening and forgiving.

Staff vs students – Always a highlight is our staff vs students matches. Last year one of our school leaders, Hayden, started what I am sure will be an ongoing annual competition between the staff and the year 6 students. Our first battle was in t-ball, and I am happy to say, the staff did not disappoint, and we came home with a convincing win. Next up is touch footy in week 10.

HOPE Cooking – we have been busy in the kitchen this term, cooking ANZAC biscuits, biscuits for our mums, quiche, brownies and cheeseburger sausage rolls.

Holiday Kids Club – coming up this holidays is the annual Holiday Kids Club at Beaudesert Baptist Church. Run during the first week from 9 to midday, the program is free and you can register using the QR on the below flyer.

Thank you for a great term! I hope you all have a wonderful school holiday break in a few weeks time.

The Arts

Performing Arts:

This term our Year 4-6 students in their Performing Arts classes have been composing their own disco-inspired songs. Armed with keyboards, percussion instruments, and the innovative GarageBand software, these young musicians have delved into the strong beats and funky rhythms that defined the disco era. They have experimented with sound combinations to create their compositions in order to capture the essence of disco.

Senior Dance Team:

In week 6 Senior Dance Team debuted their first performance of the year on parade. This particular dance was choreographed by two of our year 6 students, Madison and Kaidence, well done girls! The team has done a great job rehearsing every week in their own time. We are now working on a new dance and are still accepting new members. Stay tuned for performances later in the year that will feature Senior Dance Team, including our annual Arts Night in term 4.

Junior Dance Team:

We are very excited to announce our Junior Dance team has grown in the last few weeks after our first performance of Sunflower on parade in week 5, and new members are welcome to join. You will be able to see our Junior Dance team in performances throughout the year, including Arts Night. We are currently working on our next performance that is being choreographed with the help of some of our talented students!
