Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

Our Learning Journey held last Wednesday was extremely well attended and, from all reports, enjoyed by those who attended.  I do wish to share a massive amount of gratitude to all the staff (especially teachers) who gave so much time and energy to the preparation of the event.  In order to gauge feedback from the community, and make the event even better moving forward, could you please complete the brief survey via this link:

Learning Journey - Community feedback

We certainly enjoyed Book Week last week – the Library looked amazing with special thanks to Mrs Macintosh and those who helped out prior to the week and during this period. The Book Fair and the themed dress-up are always enjoyed by our students.

Finally – all the very best to all our students for the athletics event this week.  Based on training and the House “spirit” on show, I am expecting a highly competitive couple of days.

www.hawaiian.com.au/shopping-centres

To be in the running, please make your child’s voluntary contribution payment by 1st November 2023.

Winners will be drawn in Term 4 at the Assembly on November 17th, 2023.

Lost Property

Everyone loses things now and then.  When students lose something, they can go to the Makuru block wet area, near room 2, and look for it in the Lost and Found.  The three lost property boxes are presently overflowing with lost property.

Putting names on jackets, hats, and other personal possessions will make it easy to find them and return them to students. Items that are not needed for school, especially valuable ones, are best left at home.

Spare Parts Puppet Theatre - Blueback

Thanks to some generous sponsorship from the Hawaiian Group, our Year 2 to 5 students will be privileged to watch the Spare Parts Puppet rendition of Blueback on Monday. September 11. The Spare Parts team will visit our school on this day and so there will be no charge for this opportunity.

Blueback is a production adapted by Peta Murray from the book by Tim Winton This is one of Tim Winton’s most personal and quintessentially Western Australian stories, Blueback depicts the life of a young boy, Abel, and his mother, their relationship with the environment and their desire to protect and preserve the natural habitat of the place they call home.

Book Fair and Book Week

Last week students and staff were celebrating Book Week "Read, Grow and Inspire".  It was great to see all the fabulous costumes at the book week Dress-Up day last Thursday.

Thankyou staff, students and parents for supporting the Book Fair Celebration and we managed to raise a generous $930 that will go back to the school in the form of wonderful books.  A big thank you to Mrs Lockhart for helping Mrs Mackintosh throughout the week with book sales and assisting in the library.

Colouring Competition

The winner of the Kindy to Year 2 colouring competition was Leon H in PP Blue and Hannah M in Room 7 who won the Year 3 to Year 6 competition.   It was very difficult for Mrs Rudd and Mrs Murdock to choose from so many outstanding entries.  Congratulations to all students for their terrific colouring in efforts!

Book Cover Competition Winner

As part of this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge, Ava C in Year 4 redesigned a winning book cover for Wolf Girl by Anh Do.  At our most recent assembly, she was awarded an iPad and a special recognition pin!

Congratulations Ava!

Our Feathered Friend

A young bird entered the Makuru wet area through an open door on Tuesday morning and could not find its way out.  Thomas and Mrs Algar safely removed the lucky bird from the Makaru block later in the day.

As some baby birds are already leaving their nests, there are two important things to remember:

  • If you see a fledgling, do not pick it up. It's parents may reject it. It needs a week or so to learn to fly higher to safety.
  • Adult birds will swoop to protect a fledgling or nest area where birds are about to jump. Just keep your head down and move away from a swooping area.
  • Hope Group

What’s been happening…. A few more seedlings were planted around the greenhouse.

A group, from Room 6, has planted vegetables in one of the kitchens raised gardens and prepared another bed for potatoes with Mrs Burgess.  We made some more fire bricks with scrap paper.  Some of the Zig Zags kids have been preparing to sell the aloe vera plants with Brea.    Mrs Richards had the Eco Faery come in and reminded us about how to eat sustainably.  Mrs Rowlands sent off the plastic bags and we now have a new battery box which is just for batteries used in school.

    Health and Hygiene

    Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve.

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a students at our school who are immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

    Wellbeing Officer's Chat

Hi everyone, my initial observation of Glengarry Primary is 'Wow, they know how to co-operate with each other!'

This morning two older classes, in double line formation, were walking towards each other, on the same path.   One class stopped and changed course ever so slightly so that the other class could continue walking without changing rhythm.   No words were said.  Co-operation!

I've been watching three female students painting a mural.   One is painting high, one is painting low and the third is drawing the next part of the mural.   Co-operation with a deadline!   We all love the work colleague or friend who says 'Sure,  I can help you with that!'    It doesn't mean it is always easy to cooperate.  Sometimes we have to allow others ideas to take flight whilst our idea is parked for next time.

A community without cooperation is unhealthy.   Great to see it happening at Glengarry in so many ways.   Congratulations parents, caregivers, teachers and staff!
