National Reconciliation Week begins on the 27th of May and runs until the 3rd of June. This week marks two important events in our year as Australians and begins immediately after National Sorry Day on May 26th. National Sorry Day is a time where we apologise for the poor choices of past generations in the treatment of Aboriginal people. It is an opportunity for us to appreciate the contributions of the first Australians and to acknowledge that decisions of the past have had great negative effects on the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Extending this apology is an important step in the process of reconciliation. May 27 is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum in which more than 90 percent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples the right to vote and have a say in the government of the country. June 3 marks the anniversary of the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title – the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation. The theme for 2023 is Be a voice for Generations.
On Tuesday, St Mary's School attended Mass in the Church to honour Mary Help of Christians. Thank you to the Year Three/Four Class for doing a wonderful job at leading the Mass. It was wonderful to have some parents and parishioners in attendance.
Throughout the week we have noticed students and staff engaging more readily in educational activities when we incorporate more time towards wellbeing. Spending more time in prayer, outdoor play, colouring in and a free dress day has resulted the St Mary’s community being more active in their learning.
National Simultaneous Storytime was on Wednesday and ‘The Speedy Sloth’ was well taken on by the students. Thank you to Mrs Discenza for all your efforts in organising the day and to the Year Five library monitors for doing such a fantastic job of presenting the story.
We invite students from Kindergarten to Year Six to uncover great mysteries through the world of books for the Premier's Reading Challenge. The challenge is to log 12 or more book titles during the challenge. This year we have new and more extraordinary prizes for our readers. The 2023 challenge runs from Monday the 8th of May to Friday the 8th of September 2023.

This is an important part of giving our students, parents and teachers a voice in improving the way we operate at St Mary’s School. We cannot stress the value of taking time out of your day to provide us with feedback in building a better school community, now and in years to come. All the information you need to complete the questionaire is in Audiri (Skoolbag).
65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis Day was on today and the students enjoyed wearing free dress and finding out more about Cystic Fibrosis. We were able to raise $192.55 from our free dress day. Thank you to everyone who bought in their gold coin donations, purchased a rose or a wrist band or wore red to raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. Thank you to the White Family for helping raise awareness for such an important cause!
Faction Cross Country will be held on Thursday the 1st of June for the Pre-Primary to Year Six students. Please refer to Audiri (Skoolbag) for further information from Mrs Crees.
The Year Four/Five students presented a very entertaining assembly item which reflected on the discussions they have been having in class about the social and physical changes that have occurred over the last 80 years and how this has impacted on our overall health and fitness.
The feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the visit of Mary, the Mother of God, with the child Jesus in her womb, to her cousin Elizabeth. The visit took place when Elizabeth was herself six months' pregnant with the forerunner of Christ, Saint John the Baptist. This feast is celebrated on Wednesday, the 31st of May.
Family Friday is on this Friday, 2nd of June and everyone is welcome to attend.
