Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Dear Families

Last Wednesday our School Advisory Council gathered for the first meeting of the year. The meeting celebrated the work of the SAC in 2024 and discussed a number of aspects of SJB.

One aspect discussed at the SAC was the introduction of the St John the Baptist School Expectations with a focus on positive behaviour for learning. This has been a significant emphasis at St John’s which has seen the building of relationships and a great response from our staff and students. The emphasis on a school wide approach to positive behaviour for learning ensures consistency of language across all staff, in all situations at all times. This provides the students with clear expectations in every aspect of school life. Firm, high, clear expectations are easily achieved when we are consistent, insistent and persistent. This sets our students up for success as they know what is expected of them at all times.

The School Advisory Council discussed the strength of using a positive based approach over a ‘rules’ based approach and the notion of having the same sentence stems and language to use as families. This is a terrific recommendation as the more that this is consistent for students in every aspect of their lives this becomes a natural way of working.

Please find attached the sentence stems we are using to support our SJB School Expectations for positive behaviour for learning.

Year 5/6 Camp to Campaspe Downs

Last week our Year 5/6 students enjoyed three days at  PGL Campaspe Downs camp in Tylden. To spend time with our students at camp in a different environment to school is always a highlight. Our students thoroughly immersed themselves in all aspects of the camp. It was wonderful to see students stepping out of their comfort zones and supporting each other to try new and different activities.

Whilst at camp the staff repeatedly received feedback from numerous members of the PGL staff in relation to how well mannered and behaved the students were throughout the entire time at camp. When external members of our community recognise such qualities it is always a celebration and testament to our families and school community.

Additionally our camp team highlighted how fantastic the students were and how much they enjoyed their time with the students. Congratulations Year 5/6s you were outstanding.

We thank Mr Wayne Daniell, Mrs Lisa Giuliano, Mrs Franca Paduano, Mrs Sue Cahill, Miss Sophie Ryan and Miss Danielle Cooke for their care and support of our students throughout the days at camp.

Parish Car Park - Family & Student Safety

We cannot emphasise strongly enough for families to please respect that the Parish Car Park on Forest Road is not a drop off and pick up zone for school families. We are most concerned about the safety of our community after recent near misses where cars have not only used the car park but have also driven in quite quickly. For the safety of all in our community please use Kiss & Go or park on either Forest Road or Selman Avenue and walk into school.

Students who are walking or riding are asked to walk along the Church entry side of the Church building rather than through the Parish car park to ensure the safety of all.

Kiss and Go

It is great to see ‘Kiss & Go’ working well on our return to school.  Given the smooth nature of ‘Kiss & Go’ we have now returned to a 3:15pm finish.

A friendly reminder to all users of ‘Kiss & Go’ that to ensure the smooth operation of after school pick that it is a left turn only onto Forest Road.

Halogen Leadership Day

Each year Halogen presents a National Young Leaders Day for student leaders in primary and secondary school to have the opportunity to hear and learn from young leaders in the community. This year the St John the Baptist School Captains have the opportunity to attend the Halogen National Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre on Monday 3rd March.

This year's guest speakers include: Emma McKeon - Swimming Olympic Medalist, Majak Daw - AFL Player, Catherine Laga'aia - Actress & Thomas Duncan-Watt - Award winning screenwriter and author.

We look forward to an informative and inspiring day with our SJB School Captains.

First Reconciliation Family Evening

On Thursday evening our Year 3 families came together to enjoy our First Reconciliation Family Evening.  It was wonderful to see our Year 3 families come together to share experiences of Reconciliation and gain an understanding of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We thank the Year 3/4 team, Marialisa Mandarino REL and Mary Makarucha SJB Faith Development Co-ordinator for their work in preparing the evening and our parish and school students for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

NAPLAN

In the coming weeks our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

The NAPLAN assessment tasks consist of the following assessment tasks:

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)

  • Numeracy

NAPLAN is one aspect of St John the Baptist’s assessment and data collection used to monitor student progress and growth.  NAPLAN data is used in conjunction with school based data, student work samples and anecdotal records. All of this information is reflected upon in the planning of learning and teaching, as well as assessment and reporting.

We ask families to support our students as they prepare to undertake NAPLAN by encouraging them to give it their best.  This is all we ask of any of our students when entering all tasks.
