Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Chickenpox (Varicella)
There has been a number of new cases of Chickenpox in the school. We are continuing our additional cleaning and precautions to minimise transmission. Please watch your child for symptoms. If your child has chickenpox, they may:
• have a mild fever
• feel tired and irritable
• be itchy
• have a rash /blister like spots.
Please advise the school ASAP if you suspect your child has contracted Chickenpox.
Children with chickenpox should not go to kindergarten or school until the last blister has dried.
Parents and Visitors to Lihir International School
We have had a number of cases of both parents and visitors to the school walking through the school grounds without first checking in at the main administration office. While we encourage teacher parent communication it is preferred an appointment be arranged prior to any formal meetings. For any informal correspondence please do stop by the main administration office to touch base before entering the school. Also, it is a courtesy to knock on the classroom door before entering the classroom, particularly if the teacher is busy with other students and not aware you are there.
Student Absences
Please note, it is not the classroom teacher’s responsibility to provide learning packs or work for students who are absent for a period of time for either travel or sickness. Our teachers will generally assist with providing core work and assessment for students, but this should be organised via email prior to coming to the classroom. This provides teacher’s an opportunity to gather resources and provide clear instructions for absent students. Sick students should not come into the classroom to collect resources.
Wellbeing
As part of our student Wellbeing program, we are hosting a Wellbeing afternoon today after lunch. Thank you to Ms Langusch, the Wellbeing Team and all teachers for organising this important afternoon. Thanks also to the P&W who have made donations of fresh fruit as a healthy snack for all students from Prep to Grade 10 as part of this afternoon.
Athletics Week 6
I’d like to sincerely thank former PNG Olympian Rellie Kaputin who assisted this week with running athletics workshops for all classes form Prep to Grade 10. The year is moving ahead quickly and it will not be too long before year 8 and year 10 National Exams are upon us. Next week our Grade 8 students will do their second lot of mock exams, the following week Grade 10 will sit their mock exams. LIS teachers have a comprehensive program to well prepare students in place, including afterschool and weekend remedial studies. A timetable for the upcoming holiday program will go home to Grade 8 and 10 parents in the coming weeks. Please note this will take place during the first week 23 to 27 June. Attendance is very important leading up to the exams.
