A message from Clare

Good afternoon families and friends,

Well what a fortnight it has been. Thank you to all of you who inquired about the ACEC conference l attended in Cairns. Whilst the setting was fabulous, the content and quality of the keynote speakers and presenters was absolutely outstanding. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to engage with colleagues- known and unknown- from across Australia. I think a reassuring undercurrent was that Catholic education is in a good space and we have much to celebrate and showcase in our schools.

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT:

Last Friday, we held an Open Morning and welcomed four families to visit our beautiful learning spaces inside and out. The P&F, SAC and Elena from Macseye were invited to attend and it was very successful. I think our visitors got a very strong sense of the strength of our community here at St Luke’s. My thanks to Sabina, Jess and Jacinta from our P&F, and to Nader from our SAC who were able to join us. I would like to thank the other members from both groups who volunteered for other open mornings and l will definitely establish this as a vital element of our enrolment campaigns in future years. A little piece of feedback from one of the visitors was on just how strong he could sense the community feel and that his son's current school really is missing the community events etc…It goes without saying that our Year 6 student leaders did another great job promoting our school.

On Monday, the staff enjoyed a wonderful day of personal faith formation and self-care. Fr Alex and Nina Grieve led the group through two Alpha sessions where we looked at some big questions: Is there more to life than this? and Who is Jesus? It was very well received by all people and many felt that having time to listen, reflect and respond was great. The second part of our day was personal well-being and self-care. Gabi Carter did a great job, tailoring just-right sessions to promote practical ways we can look after ourselves. We are so fortunate to have really incredible school leaders here at St Luke’s.

MAINTAINING and ENSURING THE SAFETY OF ALL…I’m sure you have all noticed that the carpark has been remarked. We are very pleased with the end result and feel we are well on the way to reducing the risk for our student pedestrians. One parking spot has been removed in the 5 minute drop off zone and has been made an Emergency Vehicles ONLY park. Please observe this. There have been 16 car parks allocated to staff. I am asking adults NOT TO PARK in a staff carpark. Parking, reversing and exiting these parks poses an additional hazard to our children.

Please make sure you, or the person dropping off/ collecting your child walks them to/walks across to the lawn to do so.

COMMUNITY

Our P&F organised Colour Run is sprinting with many families enjoying the fun of getting sponsorship. Thanks to Dani Fusca who is like a little hurricane behind the scenes, making sure the momentum continues to build. Congratulations to Reuben Thong who won this week’s incentive- $500 worth of prizes. The next challenge/incentive is to win one of the many vouchers… but you’ve got to be in it, to win it. Any amount- small or large will be really appreciated.

We are so very grateful for the money that the P&F raises each year. It makes small and large initiatives possible. Many families have been asking how the P&F fundraising money is spent. You will see below just how broad ranging the projects, resources and initiatives are for which  the money is used. Sometimes it is for a carefully planned resource or program or at other times it may be an unexpected need that our school budget has not allowed for and so l call on some funds from fundraising to support these unexpected expenses.

To date we have spent money on:

  • A new phone system (2022 Fete funds and unexpected)

  • Commissioning an Aboriginal artist to work with our children to paint the totems in the Sensory garden

  • Materials for the working bee- (playground mulch etc)

  • Year 6 Graduation Memory books

  • Literacy resources (decodable books) to support our Science of Reading approach

  • Website upgrade

In the future, some thoughts are, but not confirmed:

  • Contribution to upgrade our IT infrastructure

  • Lego Club

  • STEM program- incursions, robotics, Lego

  • Furniture upgrade supplementation

I circulated a very quick, 5 minute survey for families to complete on Audiri earlier today. We’re asking for your ideas. Please make sure you add your thoughts.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION:

Grab your tickets now if you haven’t done so already. We can’t wait to raise the roof with our voices and create a rumble as we dance our time away. We are so looking forward to showing you our talents.

Please note the following time change:

The MATINEE SESSION will begin at 12.30pm SHARP on Thursday afternoon. Please let relatives know who may be taking a younger sibling. We need to be on buses no later than 2.20 pm to return to school, hence the earlier timeslot.

The PREMIERE (in the evening) will begin at 7 pm sharp.

Expected duration of performance: approximately 1.5 hours (90 minutes)

STAFFING:

As mentioned in an Audiri message last week, Julie Inglese will begin her long service leave on Monday for two weeks. I am very excited for Julie and her family, who will fit some travel into the next couple of weeks. Please keep her in your thoughts and we will all look forward to her return in Term 4. I will also be taking a few weeks at the beginning of next term with some pre-arranged travel with my husband, Mark. We’ll be heading back to the land of our ancestors- Ireland.

What can l say- our FATHER’S DAY Breakfast was fantastic this morning. The hall was full with Dads, grandads and other special men who managed to grab a bite to eat, catch up with friends AND fly their paper planes. What could be more perfect? It was fantastic to see the kids busily practising their paper planes throws and l would have to say, the kids definitely outdid their dads! The old boys need to practise. Congratulations to the MANIAS family who won the family voucher with their combined- sister, brother and Dad- winning throws. Thanks to our staff who helped with the set up, serving and pack-up of this special event. Thank you also to the P&F for organising the Father’s Day stall today. Sabina and others did a great job.

To finish off, can l offer the following blessing to all of our Dads- those here with us or no longer with us. To other men who love us and who hold a special place in our hearts…

Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary,to the care of Joseph, an earthly father.Bless all fathers as they care for their families.Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience;support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them,as we look to you for love and salvation, through Jesus Christ our rock and defender.Amen.                                    - Author Unknown

Have a great weekend everyone,  Clare

REMINDER: Masses of Thanksgiving for our Sacramental Candidates

      Numeracy Term 3

This term in the classroom, teachers have been focusing on building number fluency as a part of the ‘Daily Review’.

Mathematical fluency is a key part of your child’s learning. It means being able to carry out basic maths calculations quickly and accurately, using well-practised methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It also involves knowing number facts (like times tables, friends of 10, ect) by heart and understanding maths language, symbols, and how to read and work with number sentences or equations.

When children are fluent in these basic skills, they can focus more easily on solving challenging problems and developing their reasoning and thinking skills. Fluency helps unlock the confidence and ability to tackle more complex maths.

Regular practice, both at school and at home, helps strengthen this important foundation and supports your child’s long-term success in mathematics.

These websites are helpful resources to support students in building their number fluency.

      3/4 Sage Camp Memories

Our campers from Sage have had the chance to reflect on camp, and these are their thoughts..

MaxwellI liked the talent show because the acts were so GOOD. Aubrey and Oliver were epic. My act was epic ,the supper was butter chicken CYC is the most goated of all the city. But before that was ACMI I loved the games. And lastly the state library ,it was so PLEASANT.
MaddieMy favourite part of camp was the State Library because it had towers of beautiful books and lots of history, we even saw Ned Kelly's armour. But I also loved the talent show, ACMI and spending time with my friends. It was amazing!
ArchieI liked the talent show Aubrey was the BEST in the  talent show. I liked how Oliver had eggs and he ate them and then his noodles when it was my group. Jimmy's handwriting was hard to read so Jimmy read all the jokes out. After the talent show we had dinner. We had butter chicken, bread and green beans then when we got back we went to sleep. The end
AlexandraMy favourite part of camp was Ruffey Lake Park. Ruffey Lake Park had 2 or 3 slides and even had a flying fox! We ate our splendid lunch there and lots of people high-fived the runners that were doing cross country! It was the best camp ever!
AubreyI  loved the talent show. I was the host. We went to the Sports Museum. I saw jerseys, cups and the flags at the museum.
PoppyI loved watching the movie Stuart Little, finding out about our cabin partners and so much, much more. It was the morning of CYC city camp and my heart was pounding ‘Boom, Boom, Boom’ as we were getting in the car.
Dylan SMy favourite part of the Melbourne city camp was the MCG in the GAME ON footy section. I loved it and I was the first one to see it. I probably had the lowest score, only 18 points, that was my highest. Stuart Little was so good, I loved it as well. The cabins were so fun. We did some funny business past our bedtime. I went to bed at 11:oo and woke up at 4:57 am and stole Athen’s Uno. At dinner I had a little wrap and butter chicken, it was so good! And the dessert was actually so good. Best dinner! Breakfast was so good we had pancakes and I scoffed. When we got back to St Luke’s we watched the movie until it was finished.
ReubenI had a super time when I went to camp. My favourite part was the talent show because of my act and Aubrey and Ollie. The next day we went to the State Library and Ruffey Lake Park. I liked how we could read the books at the library and we had lots of fun on the playground at the park.
ChiaraOn camp my favourite thing was the talent show because all the acts were really good. The Sports Museum was also really fun because everything was really cool and you got to give yourself nicknames. My cabin was really fun as well.
      Florence

I really liked when the teachers were announcing the cabins because I got all my friends in my cabin and my view was amazing. Nearly the whole night I was watching this homeless man sleeping then he spotted me. I really thought the Sports Museum was splendid. I liked the games section of the Sports Museum.

Tilly LOn camp my favourite part was ACMI, with all the technology old and new, it also had lots of history. We also went to the State Library and it had a lot of cool books and paintings. It had a very creative Lego replica of the State Library.
MadisonAt camp, I could not choose what my favourite thing was, so I chose EVERYTHING! It was VERYYYY fun!!! In my cabin room, I had Tilly K, Sophie, Chiara, Ava and Olivia! We did activities like: ACMI, Birrarung Marr, MCG Sports Museum, Ruffey Lake Park and more!
Tilly KI had a super awesome time at camp. I loved going to the MCG for the Sports Museum. At the Sports Museum I loved the game section because we could earn points and look back at my points back at home. IT WAS SO FUN!
VanessaAt camp I had a really stupendous time. A few of my favourite parts were at Ruffey Lake Park, there were some really cool play equipment there and when we were eating lunch some kids were doing cross country, we were all high-fiving and cheering them on. Another thing that was really fun and amazing was definitely the Sports Museum, we even got our own wrist bands that we could scan on things. Last but not least, the rooms were amazing. I had soooo much fun, I can't forget anything about it!
OliverMy favourite thing  about camp was the talent show. I especially liked being the host. I liked Jimmy's joke group. It was funny. I had a joke of my own. I said to Lachie, did you leave your fridge running, yes he said ,then you better go catch it! At dinner we had butter chicken and for breakfast we had pancakes with whipped cream and maple syrup.
MilaCamp was amazing! My favourite parts were the State Library and finding out about our cabin friends. At the Sports Museum I loved the games areas because it had lots of games that were fun! Ruffey Lake was also fun because of all the different equipment like the flying fox.
MitchellMy favourite thing about camp was the Sports Museum. The ‘Game On’ section was my most favourite in the MCG. It was so cool, especially the soft balls.
HannahThe most exhilarating part about camp was the spectacular questionable trivia. My most preferred part would be the exhilarating cabin sorting. The most supreme part was basically everything and it was the finest adventure ever. Some of the activities and adventures were Birrarung Marr, the Talent Show, MCG Sports Museum, especially the adventurous games there! I would admire going to camp with so many wonders and adventures again.
SophieMy favourite thing about camp is probably finding out our cabins and the talent show! I also loved my bed because I could  see the view of the city!

      SMART WATCHES & MOBILE PHONES

If a child wears a smart watch to school, it must be de-activated so the child is not receiving or sending messages etc...

Mobile Phones are requested to be left at the office in the morning and collected at the end of the day.

      FOOD ALLERGIES:

Allergic reactions to food… can be harmful to our children. For that reason we ask parents to think carefully about what they are packing in their child’s lunch boxes. Occasionally, something might slip through and once aware, we take precautions to ensure the safety of every child. As stated in the Family Handbook 2025:

We are an EGG and NUT free school due to the allergies of children within our community.  We ask that parents respect this request and the potential harm this could do to children if brought to school.

Thank you for your care and attention to this.

CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER THE BELL OR LEAVING EARLY:

As part of our wellbeing care of children at St Luke's, every class engages in a morning routine at 8.50 am.  This quiet, calm time allows children to gather together in a circle, to greet each other by name, to pray and/or enter into some Christian meditation and get ready for the day.  Please make sure you allow enough time to get your child to school BEFORE 8.50 am.

If children arrive after the gate and student entry doors are locked, parents/carers are required to walk their child/ren to the school office and sign them in on the VPass iPad.

If leaving early (before the end of the day), parents/carers are required to sign their child/ren out on the VPASS iPad.
