TERM 3 WEEK 4 - 9 August 2023

Principal Update

NAIDOC Week

We had a fantastic week last week celebrating NAIDOC Week. Last week also marked Education Week and 175 years of Public Education. We were extremely proud of all students last week for their exceptional behaviour and engagement in all activities. It was also lovely to have parents, community members and students and staff from Moruya High School join us throughout the week. We are committed to ensuring there are a range of opportunities for students at Moruya Public School. Last week Chalk Art, our Excursion to Bingi and a range of cultural activities were definitely highlights.

Darryl's Retirement

On Friday afternoon and evening we farewelled Darryl Cruse. Darryl has retired from his position as Aboriginal Education Officer at Moruya Public School. Darryl was a valued member of our school community who left a lasting impact on students, staff and community members. He was committed to ensuring success for all students. We wish Darryl all the best for his retirement and look forward to seeing him at school often as he continues in a volunteer capacity in numerous activities.

Year 1 Phonics Screening

Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read. Some children struggle with learning to read so it is important that these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support they may need. The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, quick assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The test normally takes a few minutes. If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check. The check is carefully designed not to be stressful for your child. The assessment includes pseudo or nonsense words to see if the student is able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before. Students in Year 1 will complete the phonics screening over the next few weeks. If you have any further questions, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

School Climate Survey

At Moruya Public School we want to ensure that all students have access to the best possible education. School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW) is constantly reviewing the condition and student demand of schools throughout NSW to anticipate their needs, whether it is to grow, adjust to meet contemporary teaching practices, or to find opportunities to implement other improvement. School Climate surveys are being conducted to better understand how students, parents, and teachers experience Moruya Public School. We hope that you will be able to support us by providing feedback through these surveys. Students in Years 3-6 will also participate unless they are withdrawn by their parent. Further information is included within this newsletter. We look forward to being able to share the survey results and our next steps with you.

Book Parade

This year we will be holding our Book Week Parade on Tuesday 22 August at 10.30 am. The theme this year is Read Grow Inspire. Parents and friends are welcome to join us for the parade. Further information will follow.

Art in the Making

All classes have been working with their local artist to complete their artwork for our exhibition on 15 September. We can't wait to share our creations with you. Thank you to all artists and our P&C for your ongoing support.

Uniform Survey

We are currently seeking feedback on proposed changes to our school uniform. Thank you to the many parents who have already completed the survey. If you would like to provide feedback the survey can be accessed at https://forms.gle/6vhThKz7TwdJczvi6 Survey feedback will be discussed at the next Uniform Committee Meeting at 3:30 pm on Wednesday 16 August in the staffroom.

Interschools Snowsport Championship

Congratulations to Zara and Lucy who competed at the Interschool Snowsports Championship. Both students qualified for the state competition.  Zara will be competing in Ski Cross and Lucy will be competing in the Alpine event. We wish them good luck.

Have a wonderful week.

Sarah Davis

Deputy Principal

This term has so many examples of the wonderful opportunities that are available in public education. This week, a Youth Connection to Country program gets underway at Moruya Public for 25 students.  Students will participate in a 6 week program run by Muladha Gamara that will engage them in the rich Yuin culture both here at school and through various on-country experiences.  We look forward to hearing from these cultural ambassadors as they explore cultural identity, bush tucker, medicine, tools, artifacts, housing, as well as men’s and women’s business.

11 of our students are also currently participating in a music tuition program run by staff at Moruya High School. The tuition program will culminate in these students performing in the Moruya High School MAD (Music, Art, Drama) Night on Thursday 7 September. Please put this date in your calendar now! Some members of our school community may even get a peak at the show in a matinee performance during the day.

Year 6 began their transition to high school program this week with today set aside to get a taste of what they will experience once Year 7 gets underway in 2024. This will be the first of a couple of visits to Moruya High School and we encourage all students to attend regardless of the choice of school students will continue their education in.

Please do not miss our Assembly this week, the focus will be on achievement – whether it be attendance, involvement in extra-curricular activities, sport or application to learning.  Parents/carers of students that are being acknowledged will be contacted prior to the assembly.

Hope to see you there

Mrs Scobie

OUR CLASS SUPERSTARS

DISTRICT ATHLETICS - SURFSIDE

Last week MPS had a successful group of students who qualified and participated in the PSSA District Athletics Carnival. We had 34 participants across a range of events over the Track and Field programs. All students gave a huge effort in the events of track sprint racing, sprint relay, shot put, long jump and high jump. Our student relay sprint teams worked hard together to race competitively with our Junior Girls team successfully achieving a third place. We also had students who placed in top three positions in shot put, high jump and in sprint racing. MPS are proud of all the students who attended the carnival and thank the families who came out to support them on the day. We are looking forward to seeing the achievements of our MPS students who qualify for the Regional Athletics Carnival in September.

Art in the Making - Class Summaries

gwiyallas -  Will be doing mosaics - outdoor setting and guitar-connection and relax.

dulumas - Acrylic paint pouring project.

Pelicans - Have started our two or three large trees on wood and corflute for outdoors - depicting various stages of tree regrowth from fires/drought. (drawing and painting)

Penguins - We are doing Japanese braiding called kumihimo.

Seals - Painting jigsaw of Moruya river, mountains and seals.

3B - Are going to do an underwater theme on a large canvas.

5T - Will be creating geometric patterns, inspired by Morroccan tiles, on fabric. The process involves blocking out a pattern on chemically treated fabric, then exposing to sunlight, causing a chemical reaction. Each student will be printing a 15cm square, which will be used as part of a cushion cover. We intend to make 3 cushions in total.

6A - A photomontage created from (very) small photographs (taken by the students on phones, ipads) of life in and around Moruya in various colours (blue sky, yellow sand, red bricks etc but not just close ups of textures, predominately images with people and places), to create small tiles to stick to a large sheet of foam core or similar that we could arrange to form a larger image.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

The SRC had a busy term 2 culminating in a competition to rename our playground areas (now known as Lilli Pilli, Bottlebrush and Waratah).  The class that submitted the winning names celebrated with pizza - which judging by the photos, they really enjoyed (see below).

This term the group are working on a whole school pledge as part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.  Students have planned an activity where each of our students will place a handprint in a designated area to remind us all of our stance against bullying and violence.

UPCOMING BIRTHDAYS

NAIDOC WEEK

Last week, MPS celebrated NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme was ‘For Our Elders’.

Our NAIDOC Week commenced with an assembly, flag raising and Elders’ Morning Tea run by our Aboriginal Student Voice. During our assembly, students shared thoughtful and heartfelt words on the Elders who inspire them in their life.

On Tuesday, the whole school attended Riverside Park for chalk art. As previous years, the competition was fierce, making it hard for the judges to pick a winner.

Everyone had an amazing time at Bingie Point on Wednesday. Students and parents participated in a cultural walk with Trish Ellis, dhurga sand creations with Mrs Boyenga, weaving with Vikki Parsley with the assistance of Moruya High School students and staff, and traditional games run by Moruya High School’s Clontarf students. We were blessed with great weather, a pod of whales close to shore and seals off the point.

Our Bingi Dreaming Track whole school excursion was funded by the "National Indigenous Australian's Agency".

On Thursday there was a school favourite - johnny cake making. Members of the Aboriginal Student Voice assisted classes by conducting a safety talk, demonstration, and cooking johnny cakes with added butter, jam and/or golden syrup to their cooked johnny cake. Uncle Darryl also came and assisted on the day.

The week ended with a mufti day and afternoon tea for Uncle Darryl. It was bittersweet, all sad to see him go, but all wishing him the best for his retirement.

A big thank you to everyone, who contributed to making NAIDOC week a success!
