NAIDOC WeekWe had a fantastic week last week celebrating NAIDOC Week. Last week also marked Education Week and 175 years of Public Education. We were extremely proud of all students last week for their exceptional behaviour and engagement in all activities. It was also lovely to have parents, community members and students and staff from Moruya High School join us throughout the week. We are committed to ensuring there are a range of opportunities for students at Moruya Public School. Last week Chalk Art, our Excursion to Bingi and a range of cultural activities were definitely highlights.
Darryl's Retirement
On Friday afternoon and evening we farewelled Darryl Cruse. Darryl has retired from his position as Aboriginal Education Officer at Moruya Public School. Darryl was a valued member of our school community who left a lasting impact on students, staff and community members. He was committed to ensuring success for all students. We wish Darryl all the best for his retirement and look forward to seeing him at school often as he continues in a volunteer capacity in numerous activities.
Year 1 Phonics Screening
Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read. Some children struggle with learning to read so it is important that these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support they may need. The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, quick assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The test normally takes a few minutes. If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check. The check is carefully designed not to be stressful for your child. The assessment includes pseudo or nonsense words to see if the student is able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before. Students in Year 1 will complete the phonics screening over the next few weeks. If you have any further questions, please talk to your child’s class teacher.
School Climate SurveyAt Moruya Public School we want to ensure that all students have access to the best possible education. School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW) is constantly reviewing the condition and student demand of schools throughout NSW to anticipate their needs, whether it is to grow, adjust to meet contemporary teaching practices, or to find opportunities to implement other improvement. School Climate surveys are being conducted to better understand how students, parents, and teachers experience Moruya Public School. We hope that you will be able to support us by providing feedback through these surveys. Students in Years 3-6 will also participate unless they are withdrawn by their parent. Further information is included within this newsletter. We look forward to being able to share the survey results and our next steps with you.
