Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 3 Issue 5

Principal's Message

Welcome back to Term 3. I trust that you all had an enjoyable break and could slow down and breath! We have another very busy term lined up with many activities in place. Congratulations to our student leadership team and Room 21 who have run our assemblies this term. Room 21 students did an absolutely, amazing Auslan presentation. They signed the entire song of “My Island Home”. We were all very proud of you! The time and effort that you have put in to learn this has gone above and beyond.

This term we have welcomed Mrs Stacey Price to our NPS team. Mrs Price has been very busy since arriving in Newman. She has taken on the Health component of the curriculum and is filling in when we have staff absent. It is hopeful that this is only for a short time before undertaking some extensive 1-1 work with some of our students.

We had some very successful events since our last edition of our newsletter. The whole school learning journey night was another fantastic opportunity for our community to come into the school and see what the incredible work that the students have been doing. Thank you to our P&C who fed many hungry families on the night. We held a very successful NAIDOC event, and it was wonderful to see community members attending our event. A big thank you to Mrs Bateman who worked very closely with me in making this event a success. The parents that provided a tasting dish on the day – we had the best spread Newman has ever seen!

Our Year 1 students have completed a 6-week project across the year working with Barking Geckos. The focus for this project was social and emotional development. A celebration of their learning was held last week, and the students all enjoyed this special time with the families.

A massive thank you to our School Psychologists, Koby and Dani who have delivered 2 very important workshops for parents. One on “bullying” and the other was Fear-Less, which was all about Anxiety and strategies that can be beneficial to use with children.

Next week we will be celebrating Book week with a whole school parade on Wednesday 20 August, commencing at 8:20am. Parents are more than welcome to join in the fun of dressing up and coming along to watch the parade.

Every morning, our school gates are unlocked and opened at 7:45am. Students in Years 1 - 6 go to the undercover area where they are supervised and sent to class at 8:00am. The Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students should be sitting down out the front of their classrooms waiting for the doors to be open. In the afternoon, the locked gates in the early childhood will be open at 2:10pm to allow parents to enter. Most times, the gates at the front of the school are open all day.

Our priority is always your child and in developing a close relationship with our school community where we all work together to provide the best educational opportunities for all children at Newman Primary School. Please remember to make yourself known to your child’s class teacher and don’t hesitate to seek clarification on any questions you may have. Your child’s teacher is always the first port of call. If further clarification is needed or you would like to discuss other areas, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Primary Principals Day - Friday 1 August

Building strong foundations for life and learning - foundations that last the distance, stand the test of time, and enable young people to really thrive - takes dedication, expertise, leadership, and courage. Every day, our Principal Mrs Hudson contributes in this way to the lives and learning of the children in our school community.

Students made cards thanking Mrs Hudson and these were presented to her by two of the student leaders.

Bullying NO WAY: National week of action: 11 to 15 August 2025

Proudly supporting Bullying No Way: National Week of Action

This year Newman Primary School students will be participating in the Bullying No Way: National week of action: 11 to 15 August 2025.

Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention. It gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and school communities to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.

The theme for this year's campaign is Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.

It takes a community to be brave and address bullying behaviours, within and beyond the school gate.

Students can be bold, kind and speak up to support others being bullied. While trusted adults are there to support children and young people learn how to be kind to each other and report bullying.

This Bullying No Way Week, we’re asking you to be bold and say something, be kind and support someone and be proud to speak up against bullying.

By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying.

Families play an important role in helping children understand bullying and know how to respond to it.

Questions you could ask:

·         What do you think bullying is?

·         Have you seen it? How did you feel?

·         Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?

·         As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?

·         Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?

·         Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.

Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.

By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.

If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.

ELP 0-3 Program

Newman Primary school runs an on-school site Early Learning Program for children and families aged 0-3.  This program targets children’s readiness for school by offering a coordinated approach to engage children and their families with important services and early intervention to address areas of developmental concern.

Come down to Newman Primary Room K9 in the Early Childhood area on Thursday and Friday from 8:00am - 10:00am to meet Miss Lisa Mahoney and learn about the importance that language plays in your child’s developmental journey.

This program is proudly sponsored by BHP and there is no cost to families who wish to attend.

Attendance and Absences

Newman Primary School transitioned to a new system, all Attendance SMS messages will now come from a new contact NewmanPS.

The new system will notify parents, guardians, and caregivers of unexplained absences or late arrivals.

The new system started on the 4 June.  It will send parents an SMS on their mobile phone when their child is marked absent without an explanation.

Parents should delete the old Absentee SMS number to avoid confusion.

Parents will get this SMS with the link if their child is marked absent without explanation.  Parents should use this link to add attendance about their child's absence.  Please note that the link will be valid for only 48 hours.  Do not reply to this message via SMS as the school will not receive this.  The school will receive your response via the link provided.  Ensure the phone is connected to an internet data plan or has WIFI access to use the hyperlink.

If your child is absent again without prior explanation, parents will get a new one-time link.

If parents do not use the link provided, they can notify the school of their child's absence via telephone or email (newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au).

If you have any questions regarding the Attendance SMS Communication, please call 9154 3900.
