Dear families,
Celebrating Our Wonderful School Volunteers — National Volunteers Week
As we mark National Volunteers Week, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and sincerely thank the extraordinary members of our school community who commit their time, energy, and expertise to Hallett Cove East Primary School. Our volunteers play a vital role in enriching the lives of our students, and we are incredibly grateful for your dedication.
Across our school, volunteers are the quiet champions who go above and beyond in so many ways. To those who serve on our Governing Council and committees, your leadership and support are foundational to our school’s progress and success. Our heartfelt thanks extend to parents, carers, and community members who assist on excursions, support at sporting events, manage and coach after-school sport programs, and help coordinate fundraising events, providing students with valuable learning experiences and a real sense of community.
We also deeply appreciate those who support our canteen, assist with our school garden, and dedicate time in classrooms. Supporting learning activities within and outside the classroom makes a substantial difference and helps our community to be at its best.
The generosity and spirit of support shown by our volunteers create a vibrant learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Your contributions; no matter how big or small, are valued and deeply appreciated.
Number Fact Fluency
We are continuing to strengthen students’ mathematical skills through a focus on number fact fluency at our school. Number fact fluency is the quick and accurate recall of foundational maths facts and procedures, and it plays a vital role in helping students become confident and capable mathematicians. Research shows that when students struggle early in mathematics, they are more likely to develop maths anxiety towards later learning. By building strong and early foundations and automatic recall, students can reduce the cognitive load placed on their working memory, allowing them to focus on solving more complex problems, making connections, and applying their learning in new situations.
Students participate in short, daily fluency routines that are explicit, consistent, and highly effective. These routines use repeated and deliberate practice to strengthen long-term memory, helping students move from learning new concepts to applying them fluently and confidently. By practising foundational 'gateway skills' such as number formation, number recognition, and recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, students develop the strong mathematical skills needed for future success. We are excited to see our students growing in both confidence and mathematical understanding.
With regards
