A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear families,

Celebrating Our Wonderful School Volunteers — National Volunteers Week

As we mark National Volunteers Week, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and sincerely thank the extraordinary members of our school community who commit their time, energy, and expertise to Hallett Cove East Primary School. Our volunteers play a vital role in enriching the lives of our students, and we are incredibly grateful for your dedication.

Across our school, volunteers are the quiet champions who go above and beyond in so many ways. To those who serve on our Governing Council and committees, your leadership and support are foundational to our school’s progress and success. Our heartfelt thanks extend to parents, carers, and community members who assist on excursions, support at sporting events, manage and coach after-school sport programs, and help coordinate fundraising events, providing students with valuable learning experiences and a real sense of community.

We also deeply appreciate those who support our canteen, assist with our school garden, and dedicate time in classrooms. Supporting learning activities within and outside the classroom makes a substantial difference and helps our community to be at its best.

The generosity and spirit of support shown by our volunteers create a vibrant learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Your contributions; no matter how big or small, are valued and deeply appreciated.

Number Fact Fluency

We are continuing to strengthen students’ mathematical skills through a focus on number fact fluency at our school. Number fact fluency is the quick and accurate recall of foundational maths facts and procedures, and it plays a vital role in helping students become confident and capable mathematicians. Research shows that when students struggle early in mathematics, they are more likely to develop maths anxiety towards later learning. By building strong and early foundations and automatic recall, students can reduce the cognitive load placed on their working memory, allowing them to focus on solving more complex problems, making connections, and applying their learning in new situations.

Students participate in short, daily fluency routines that are explicit, consistent, and highly effective. These routines use repeated and deliberate practice to strengthen long-term memory, helping students move from learning new concepts to applying them fluently and confidently. By practising foundational 'gateway skills' such as number formation, number recognition, and recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, students develop the strong mathematical skills needed for future success. We are excited to see our students growing in both confidence and mathematical understanding.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS Community

At Hallett Cove East Primary School we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful volunteers who generously gave their time to support our Mother’s Day Stall.

Your assistance with organising gifts, setting up, helping students choose special items and creating such a positive atmosphere was greatly appreciated. Events like these are only possible because of the support of our school community, and we thank you for helping make the experience so special for our students and families.

We are also excited to begin our mid-year transition process for students joining HCEPS. This week, our Reception students from 7W visited Karrara Kindergarten where they participated in an Aboriginal Dreamtime story, artwork activities, a picnic and play. The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for students reconnecting with their former kindy to share familiar experiences, while also helping new students build positive connections with HCEPS staff and students ahead of their transition. We look forward to continuing to welcome and support students and families as they begin their journey with our school community.

Our official transition visits for students commencing mid-year will begin later this term during Weeks 7, 8 and 9. These visits provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with school routines, learning spaces, staff and peers in a supportive and positive environment. Transition opportunities are an important part of helping students build confidence, develop connections and feel a strong sense of belonging as they prepare to start at HCEPS.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

Deputy Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR STUDENT WELLBEING LEADER

Supporting Children with Anxiety – Parent & Staff Resource

Recently I attended a professional learning workshop presented by Dr Kirrilie Smout, a highly respected Clinical Child Psychologist and the founder/director of Developing Minds Psychology & Education and creator of Calm Kid Central.

Dr Smout is well known across Australia for her work supporting children and adolescents with:

  • anxiety
  • emotional regulation
  • school wellbeing
  • parent coaching
  • child-friendly mental health education

The workshop explored how anxiety presents in children, why anxiety develops, and practical ways that parents, caregivers and schools can work together to support children experiencing worry, stress and emotional overwhelm.

Some of the key messages included:

  • Anxiety is a normal human emotion and exists on a spectrum.
  • Many children experience worries at different stages of development.
  • Anxiety can look different in children than it does in adults and may appear as avoidance, anger, physical complaints, clinginess, withdrawal or difficulty concentrating.
  • Supportive relationships, empathy, emotional coaching and gradual confidence-building are incredibly important.
  • Avoiding or “rescuing” children from all uncomfortable situations can sometimes unintentionally increase anxiety over time.
  • Consistent support between home and school can make a significant difference for children.

Following the workshop, I have summarised some of the information into a visual resource for our school community to help support conversations around children’s anxiety and emotional wellbeing.

We hope families and staff find this resource helpful and supportive.

Warmest wishes,

Katrina Leucuta
