A Good Night’s Sleep

It is important for children to have a good night’s sleep. There is no magic number for exactly how much sleep we need, but the Australian Centre for Education in Sleep (ACES) suggests the following as a guide:

Primary school: 10-12 hours per day

High school adolescents: 8-10 hours per day

Adults: 7-9 hours per day

One of the key components of GEM-EL in ‘The Resilience Project’ is mindfulness but what exactly is mindfulness?

Key facts

  • Mindfulness is a mental state where you focus on the present, deliberately and without judgement.
  • This can help you feel calm, so that you can work through stressful situations.
  • Mindfulness can help you accept and manage your feelings.
  • This can be good for your mental health; help reduce stress and improve your sleep.
  • You can use mindfulness in your everyday life, or more formally using meditation techniques.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is paying full attention to what is going on in and around you, in a deliberate, open-minded and non-judgemental way. It’s a way you can support your mental and emotional health.

Mindfulness does not try to change or control your experience — you just observe and learn to accept what is happening in the moment.

Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditation principles. Mindfulness is also a big part of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). However, anyone can use mindfulness to improve self-awareness and wellbeing.

What are the benefits of mindfulness?

Mindfulness trains you to notice when you are distracted and to focus your attention in a certain way. It can help you in your:

  • day-to-day life
  • work
  • relationships
  • overall wellbeing

Daily Reading

All students from Prep should be reading each day as part of their regular homework routine. Older students are encouraged to read their library books after progressing through the reading levels. Please remind students to be borrowing from the library each week.

Thank you to parents who have again started reading with students at school at the start of each day to help support our reading program. If you would like to help with reading, please see your child's teacher.

Year 8 and 10 Exam Prep - Saturday classes

Parents and carers of our year 8 and 10 students have been advised that Saturday morning remedial sessions commence this Saturday. These sessions are compulsory for our year 8 and 10 students (except for students with religious beliefs) and it is important that students arrive on time. If your child is unable to attend a session due to illness or other reasons, please contact Ms Yip to explain their absence. Thank you to our STM staff for running these lessons.

Wellbeing Matters!

This term, we continue our rollout of 'The Resilience Project' program across all classes from Prep to year 10. As part of our Wellbeing program, this term Mrs Amanda Amidy will be taking our year 7/8 and 9/10 classes for some mindfulness and meditation. The primary classes will have mindfulness sessions with Amanda in either term 3 or term 4. We thank Amanda for her enthusiasm and support of our students.

This term, we will also hold another Wellbeing afternoon and we thank the P & W for funding a healthy fruit snack for all students on that day to promote the benefits of healthy eating.

Student folios

We ask that students folios are returned if they have not yet been bought back to school.

Friday assemblies

Each Friday, we hold a short assembly in the basketball court and parents and wantoks are welcome to attend. Today was the year 5/6 assembly and next week it will be the year 3/4 assembly. Friday assemblies commence at 8.10am.

Kind regards,

Ms Langusch.
