December 2023, Term 4 Week 10

A Message from the Principal

Christmas in the Gully was a huge success this year. It was awesome to see our school community in numbers attending this event. A massive thank you to all involved with the event. We had our P&C, staff, students, volunteers, our attractions staff and everyone else who made the event possible. Such a great way to end 2023.

Presentation Day was another huge success. I was so honoured to stand in front of our community and present awards. A massive congratulations to all of our students involved and who received awards. Thank you to all the parents who turned up and supported the ceremony. We had a lot of special guests and we thank them for their attendance.

Our Year 6 Farewell is always a very emotional time for our departing students. Today it was a special afternoon to see our Class of 2023 farewelled.

As Relieving Principal I have enjoyed working with all the families and am very grateful for the opportunity. I look forward to 2024 and continuing to work with all our school community. I also want to welcome back Ms Bax in Term 1 2024.

To all our school community please enjoy a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Regards,

Mr Hopson

The Year that was 2023

It has been another awesome year at Plattsburg Public School. 2023 started with the return of our very excited students to school. It didn’t take long before we were in full swing of the hustle and bustle of school life.

We welcomed a new face to the canteen. Miss Mel joined the team and has had so much fun feeding all our hungry students each day. We had several meal deal days throughout the year which are always a big hit.

There was always something sporty happening, whether it was Mr Hopson’s sporting group, Mr Henderson’s lunchtime soccer, the many Crossroad Zone trials or our very own athletics and cross country carnival. We were always on the move. We had AFL Kickstart, Football Australia, netball and gymnastic clinics all at school. A visit from an NRLW star was an inspiration to many. But we always look forward to the teacher verse student matches, whether it be the handball competition or a friendly Oz Tag match, the crowd rolls in to watch the spectacle.

Our lunchtime clubs were a huge hit this year, whether it was Miss Rebecca's dance group, Chess Club, Minecraft Club, Art Club, Lego Club, we had it all.  Plattsy was kept very busy during our breaks.

Plattsy students love a good dress up day and we don’t disappoint. Imaginations run wild and the effort families go with the Easter hats, Book Week costumes, Harmony day and Pirate day costumes is next level.

Community is very important at Plattsy, we have many events on our calendar throughout the year where we invite you all to share. This includes termly School Values Gala Days, Mother’s and Father’s Day breakfasts, Grandparents Day, the Fun Run, or Walk Safely to School Day. Sharing these occasions with our community builds strong relationships between school and community which is at the core of our School Value, Connecting.

Other School Values our students are very good at showing us are Empathy, Respect and Independence. We held several events throughout the year where these values were on display. Do it for Dolly, a Day for Daniel, Biggest Morning Tea and Pyjama Day for Soul Café, a lot of these were initiatives of our students.

We celebrated NAIDOC in the park. We invited schools from around our area to join in sharing culture. Culture is strong at Plattsy with our Didge boys and Cultural dancers performing all over Newcastle.

We are gradually experiencing more excursion as we distance ourselves from the years of lockdowns and home schooling. We saw Mr Stink at Civic Theatre, our primary students saw the CCJSC production of the Little Shop of Horrors. We had several incursions including Being Brave, Water Wise and Drum Corp and our infants students had the best day ever at Oakvale Farm.

As the year rolled to an end, we held our inaugural Great Duck Hunt. This saw students racing around the Gully each lunch to find the hidden ducks. This brought incredible excitement at the end of a long year.

In our final week at Plattsy, we celebrated student achievement, enjoyed our last community event at Christmas in the Gully and farewelled our Year 6 students as they now embark on the next chapter of their schooling life.

The year of 2023 has been this and so much more, from everyone at Plattsy, we wish everyone a happy and safe summer holiday and we look forward to seeing all those smiling faces back in 2024.
