Class News

Year Six

This term has flown by and we can’t believe we are at the end of term 3! Our class has been learning about finance through class economy. We get paid for our school jobs and homework, but we also have to hire our desk and chairs as well as pay income tax each week! We’re not looking forward to that in real life!

We’ve also designed a scarecrow for the Royal Show Schools Scarecrow competition with the criteria ‘Diversity in Agriculture’. We chose to incorporate maggots as a diverse way to solve land fill. Did you know despite the “ick-factor,” maggots can be helpful for the environment by reducing waste and serving as an animal feed source. It may sound gross, but it reduces decomposition time for compost by months and doesn’t release any greenhouse gases. The dried larvae become feed for animals that humans then consume. The most common example is as a protein source processed to isolate the protein, which can then become part of a feed for livestock, poultry and fish.

Early Childhood Dental Program Kitchen Table Conversations

The Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) is leading and commissioning the Early Childhood Dental Program (ECDP) in collaboration with:

  • Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (ACHWA),
  • Dental Health Services (DHS),
  • Office of the Chief Dental Officer (OCDO), and
  • Western Australian Country Health Service (WACHS).

The Early Childhood Dental Program (ECDP) is a Statewide program that will provide free, universal access to child-friendly, oral health education and dental care for all Western Australian children under 5 years of age. To make sure that the voices of families and communities are included in the design of our program we are now seeking parents, families and carers to register to host a kitchen table conversation. I have included the cover and contents page as a ‘taster’ but the full guide will be provided to the hosts once they have registered.

What is a kitchen table conversation? Kitchen table conversations are just like having a chat with your friends and neighbours around your kitchen table- but they can be hosted anywhere that you like. This may be at your house, a local park, cafe or anywhere you all feel comfortable. The main idea is to get together and share stories, thoughts, and experiences with each other.

What we're keen to know:

• What makes it easy or hard for you to look after your little ones' teeth?

• Important things that you think we should keep in mind as we plan our program?

• How you'd like us to share info with you?

• What you're curious to find out about keeping kids' teeth healthy?

The flyers attached provide more details about how hosts will be supported. Please register your details if you are interested to be a host, or share the information with your families and friends who may be interested. If you have any questions, please email ECDP.Commissioning@health.wa.gov.au directly and we will be happy to help!

Eric Hind Scholarship

Eric Hind was born in Nottingham in England in 1901. He migrated to Western Australia in 1926 and came immediately to the Wheatbelt. In 1928 he took up farming land at Burracoppin and so commenced a lifetime of interest in the Burracoppin Area.

During the Second World War Eric enlisted in the R.A.A.F and served overseas.

In 1953 he was elected to the then Merredin Road Board and continued to represent the people of Burracoppin on the Merredin Shire Council until his retirement in 1989.

After 36 years of service on the Road Board and Shire Council, the Merredin Shire Council presented Eric with a long service award and made him a Freeman of the Shire. In 1990 he received the Order of Australia Medal for services to the community.

Eric Hind was an accomplished violinist who had gained his A.L.C.M (Eng) diploma before leaving England. As an active member of the Merredin Musical Society and Concert Orchestra of the day, Eric was much sought after as a violinist and was willing to perform at any function if possible. Eric also served on the local W.A Symphony Orchestra Committee and was instrumental in getting many concerts in Merredin over a number of years.

In his honor, the Shire of Merredin offers a yearly music scholarship to the value of $1000.00.

Please see below for more information and the application form for the 2024 Eric Hind Scholarship, the Merredin Shire encourages eligible family members, friends, or acquaintances to apply.
