Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 9 Newsletter - Friday 29 March 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community

Parent-Teacher Interviews

I was pleased to see so many of you were able to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with your child/ren’s teachers this week to share your understanding of your child/ren and strengthen the collaborative effort necessary to ensure their success at school. I hope you found the meetings useful and informative. Open and transparent communication between home and school is key to maximising your child/ren’s time at Drummoyne PS and I encourage you to contact your child/ren’s teacher/s to organise a time to meet should you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.

P&C Easter Hamper Fundraising

My office has been host to some very impressive easter hampers over the last few weeks and it has been great to see the parent community come together to support this fundraising initiative. I have been particularly proud to hear about our students getting involved and helping to sell raffle tickets to neighbours and family members. A huge thank you to the P&C for organising the event. Through your combined efforts, we have been able to raise approx. $4000 for the school.

I hope you all enjoy a happy and restful Easter with your families - for those of you ‘road tripping’ over the long weekend, please remember to drive safely.

Regards,

John Nguyen

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Kindergarten Incursion with Kaleidoscope Science

Students took part in an exciting presentation with Mitchell from Kaleidoscope, focusing on push and pull forces and movement. Some students got to take part as Kindergarten learnt about the Laws of Motion and why we use experiments to test scientific ideas. Even the teachers got involved!

The Adventure of Raising Bilingual Children

One can never underestimate the benefits of learning more than one language. Working in many classrooms across the school, I am always saddened by the number of students who have immediate family members who speak a language other than English but they themselves do not. Some students indicate that they are able to understand or can work out what a parent or grandparent is talking to them about but will respond to this communication using English.

Much research into bilingualism and psycholinguistics shows that learning another language leads to an increased volume in the prefrontal cortex. So why is this important? The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain which is important for high-level thinking, such as decision-making and problem-solving.

In addition, and from my personal experience, learning a second language assists students to better understand the language structures and features of English. Better still, learning to read and write in a language other than English, enables students to compare the similarities and differences between both languages which ultimately helps them in the classroom and beyond.

Finally, and hopefully a long way off, research also shows that speaking more than one language involves mental exercises which build brain resilience. Like muscles, working out the brain helps it to maintain cognitive functioning. As a result, it has been suggested that this can help delay the onset of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

The good news is that it is never too late to learn a second (or third) language. If your family is fortunate enough to speak more than one language at home then I would highly recommend this great read by Isabelle Gerretsen (11 March 2024 - BBC)  'A wonderful opportunity': The adventure of raising bilingual children:

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

3-6 Vocabulary Glossary

This week the glossary will be focussing on vocabulary. Vocabulary refers to words that students can recognise, understand and use for communication. Vocabulary knowledge supports students to recognise humour in wordplay and brings precision to spoken and written uses for language.

Vocabulary is closely related to reading comprehension - for any reading of a text, the extent of a reader’s word knowledge is crucial for comprehension. Accurate and fast retrieval of word meanings unburdens working memory and allows the brain to connect words into sentences, and sentences into larger passages of text.
