Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 4 Issue 7

Principal's Message

I would like to welcome all our existing families back to Newman PS for Term 4 and a warm welcome to our new families who have joined us.

Our first assembly was hosted by the student leadership team and what a wonderful job they have been doing with their events this year! On Wednesday, Room 1 shared their learning about Sustainability. These students have been working hard to keep our school clean. Great song and movements year 4! Congratulations to all award recipients for Term 4 so far. You have made a great start to the term. Ensure you keep up this hard work, as your teachers are always watching.

Our year 1, 3 and 5 students have been very busy over the last week and continuing into this week with their daily swimming lessons. Whilst these lessons are vitally important for our students, it does take extra effort on the teachers’ behalf. Thank you so much to all our staff who have been doing this daily for your students!

Our school has recently had a visit from the Regional Director of Education, for the Pilbara, Mr Ashley King. Ash enjoyed a school tour and meeting some of the teachers and students. He was so lucky to have a “sneak peek” at the end of year concert rehearsal that was taking place in the pre-primary. Ash was very impressed with the school and is looking forward to future visits.

Last week World Teacher's Day was celebrated. I would personally like to send a massive thankyou to all our staff at NPS for the dedication and work they do to support the students learning each and every day!

Student leader nomination forms were sent home with students on Thursday. Any student from years 3 – 5 can nominate themselves to deliver a speech to our student body if they wish to be considered for the 2026 Leadership team. If you child is interested, please read the note carefully and ensure nomination forms are returned to the front office by 13 November COB. No late nomination forms will be included.

Wednesday 19 November, NPS will be holding student speeches, commencing at 8:30am in the undercover area. This is for all students who have nominated themselves. The 2026 Student leadership team will be announced at the end of year concert on Thursday 11 December.

Traditional Friday afternoon sport: After several discussions with the staff regarding my concerns with children participating in whole school sport, in the intense heat and immediately following lunch, there have been some changes. Years 3 - 6 have sport during period 1 on a Friday and Years 1 - 2  have their sport session on a Friday period 2. So far, the feedback has been positive.

We would like to thank and farewell Ms Emma Robinson and her family who left Newman earlier this week. Ms Robinson has been involved with the school for the past 18 years. The family made the decision that it was time for them to move onto greener pastures. We wish Emma and her family all the very best for their future endeavours.

Our new incoming kindergarten students should have all received their information for next year. A parent information session will be held on Thursday 27 November commencing at 10:45am in the school library. Following from this, there will be 2 orientation sessions for students and parents to attend: Wednesday 3 and 10 December. Times vary, depending on whether your child has been placed in the Possum or Koala group.

Planning for 2025 is in progress. To assist us in the process, if you are leaving town in the coming weeks or at the end of the year, and not returning to Newman Primary School for the 2026 school year, please send an email to newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au or contact our front office on 9154 3900. This information will greatly assist our planning.

Keep an eye on the Term 4 parent planner as there are many activities coming up in the next 5 weeks of the school year.

If you do have any questions or queries regarding upcoming events, please ensure you ring the front office. The ladies will be only too happy to assist you!

ELP 0-3 Program

Newman Primary school runs an on-school site Early Learning Program for children and families aged 0-4.  This program targets children’s readiness for school by offering a coordinated approach to engage children and their families with important services and early intervention to address areas of developmental concern.

Come down to Newman Primary Room K9 in the Early Childhood area on Thursday and Friday from 8:00am - 10:00am to meet Miss Lisa Mahoney and learn about the importance that language plays in your child’s developmental journey.

This program is proudly sponsored by BHP and there is no cost to families who wish to attend.

Attendance and Absences

Newman Primary School transitioned to a new system, all Attendance SMS messages will now come from a new contact NewmanPS.

The new system will notify parents, guardians, and caregivers of unexplained absences or late arrivals.

The new system started on the 4 June.  It will send parents an SMS on their mobile phone when their child is marked absent without an explanation.

Parents should delete the old Absentee SMS number to avoid confusion.

Parents will get this SMS with the link if their child is marked absent without explanation.  Parents should use this link to add attendance about their child's absence.  Please note that the link will be valid for only 48 hours.  Do not reply to this message via SMS as the school will not receive this.  The school will receive your response via the link provided.  Ensure the phone is connected to an internet data plan or has WIFI access to use the hyperlink.

If your child is absent again without prior explanation, parents will get a new one-time link.

If parents do not use the link provided, they can notify the school of their child's absence via telephone or email (newman.ps@education.wa.edu.au).

If you have any questions regarding the Attendance SMS Communication, please call 9154 3900.
