Term 4 Week 2 Newsletter - Friday 24 October 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Logic Lounge Parent Information Evening

We were pleased to welcome Dr Neil Jeyasingam, Clinical Psychiatrist from Logic Lounge Drummoyne, for an informative parent session on adolescent mental health. With over 70 RSVPs, the evening drew strong interest from our parent community and we were treated to a very thorough and insightful session.

Dr Jeyasingam shared his deep knowledge on topics such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, neurodivergence and the impact of gaming on mental health, answering many thoughtful questions from parents along the way.

The evening was both enlightening and reassuring, giving parents practical insights and a better understanding of how to support young people through the ups and downs of adolescence. We’re very grateful to Dr Jeyasingam for his time and expertise and hope to offer more sessions like this in the future.

Students Representing

Congratulations to Maya L in 3/4C, who continues to make us proud! After joining Stephanie Di Pasqua MP last week as “MP for a Day”, this week Maya represented Drummoyne Public School in the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition at NSW Parliament. Twelve students from schools across the Drummoyne electorate took part, each presenting a speech on one of three topics. Maya chose the topic “If I could swap places with someone for a day it would be…” and delivered a thoughtful and confident speech about swapping places with Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

Congratulations also to Maeve O, Jake L and Olivia D on their outstanding performances at the NSW State Athletics Championships! At this level, students compete against not only public school representatives but also athletes from private schools across the state, making their achievements even more impressive. Maeve placed 17th in the 11 Years Girls 1500m, Jake placed 24th in the Boys 12–13 Years Shot Put and Olivia achieved 15th in the 8–10 Years Girls Multi-Class 200m, 10th in the Shot Put and an incredible 6th in the 800m.

A special congratulations goes to Olivia, who has now qualified to represent NSW and compete at the Australian Track and Field 12 Years and Under Championships in the ACT - a truly remarkable achievement!

Stage 1 Swim School

A big thank you to our Stage 1 team and to Ms Koula Mavrakis for their outstanding work over the last two weeks coordinating and supervising the Stage 1 Swimming School program. It’s a huge task to organise, and we truly appreciate the care, energy and enthusiasm that went into making the week such a success.

The program provides our students with vital swimming and water safety skills - an essential part of growing up in a country where being around water is part of everyday life. Today’s clothed swim was a highlight, giving students the opportunity to experience what it feels like to be in the water wearing everyday clothes and to practice staying calm and safe in a simulated emergency situation.

Halloween Disco

Finally, thank you to Susan Murray for her wonderful work in coordinating tonight’s P&C disco, and to all the parent and staff volunteers who have volunteered their time to make the event possible. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend this evening, but I know our students are in for a fantastic night of fun, music and dancing.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Bear Pit Public Speaking competition at NSW Parliament

On Monday I represented Drummoyne Public School at the Bear Pit Public Speaking competition at NSW Parliament. There were 12 students speaking from different schools across the Drummoyne electorate area.

There were 3 topics to choose from and I chose ‘If I could swap places with someone for a day it would be….’ I spoke about swapping places with Australia’s first female prime minister, Julia Gillard.

It was a great experience to learn about the history of the legislative assembly and how it works, and for me to speak in the Bear Pit. I also enjoyed meeting Superintendent Christine McDonald who is the Commander of all the police in our area and was a special judge at the speaking competition.

Stage 1 Swim School

On the first day of swim school all Stage one went to the pool to learn how to swim. First everyone got into their group then walked to their spot. Next we all started to learn how to swim, we even pretended to be a lifeguard and someone got to pretend to drown and say help!

Finally we had playtime in the whirl pool. I love playtime and swimming!

By Heidi O'N 1/2A - Year 1

Over the past two weeks, year one and year two have been learning to swim at Ryde Aquatice Centre.

Firstly we got on the bus, it took about ten minutes to get to Ryde Aquatic Centre. Secondly when we got there and got into our groups we were learning different styles. Our teachers were very nice and the activities were fun.

Finally our lessons sadly finished and we came back to school. I hope we go again.

STEAM

1/2A STEAM Lesson

This week in Steam we have been making a cardboard tower with only 4 pieces of cardboard each. It was hard but it wasn't impossible. We didn't use anything except scissors. It was fun but the part that wasn't fun was when the tower kept falling. However we came up with a smart idea and it stopped falling.

CAPA

Assembly Star

This week’s Assembly Star is Claire L from 5/6O. Claire recently represented DPS at the Opera House as part our Senior String Ensemble, playing with schools from across NSW at the Festival of Instrumental Music.

We are proud of your hard work. Well done!

Wild At Art Competition - Australian Conservation Foundation.

Students in 5/6O had the opportunity to unleash their artistic creativity while learning about Australia’s threatened animals and the threats facing them. They researched various threatened animals in Australia, exploring the reasons these animals are at risk. Some animals face habitat loss due to logging, land-clearing, or bushfires, while others are threatened by introduced species like foxes and cats.

Using their research, students created original artwork representing their chosen animal, employing drawing, painting, and collage. Students also had to submit a short piece of writing that described anything they wished to mention about the artwork, such as what inspired them to depict that species.

Turquoise Parrot By Evin B

I chose to do the Turquoise Parrot because its vibrant colours shine through the dense forest of Australia. Endangered. Always will be. Small but beautiful. The way I captured the true features of this stunning creature was that I used a variety of techniques. Including flat wash, rough strokes and sketch to paint the background and the bird was just a collage of an array of different colours. The Turquoise Parrot continues to surprise me with its unique and amazing features.

The Thorny Devil by Aleksandra M

I chose the thorny devil because it inspired me as I was looking for endangered animals to make a collage on. When I found the thorny devil, I researched it and found amazing adaptations that the spiky animal had. It could collect water through its skin from small pores, without having to use its mouth. I thought this was absolutely amazing so I decided to make a collage on the Thorny Devil. I first took a few magazines and cut out very small pieces. Then, I glued them down on a piece of paper and I repeated. It took about 5 days to finish and I am very proud of it.

Whale Shark By Zoe F

I chose a whale shark because I think that we should definitely recognise the state of danger this animal is in, due to lots of human activity and habitat degradation. I also swam with one earlier in May this year, and it was an amazing experience. I love their unique stripes and dots, even though it was hard to put onto my collage. I eventually used a white posca pen. For the rest of my whale shark, I cut up lots of small pieces of grey paper, and stuck them onto my paper, changing them from a lighter grey to a darker grey. For my background, I used a dark blue and then used a light blue to outline the whale shark, so it would stand out.

Common Mist Frog By James W

Although this frog has common in its name does not mean it is. As my animal I chose the common mist frog. This endangered animal lives near small flows of water just sitting there all day long. I chose this animal because this frog isn’t really well known. Also frogs are one of my favourite animals and I find the lifecycle fascinating going from a small fish-like tadpole to a grown frog. The way they communicate is also really cool as they make all these different sounds from just the vocal sac and it's also funny watching the neck inflate like a balloon. My art style I chose was a collage frog with a water color background but instead of cutting the paper I ripped it so it would pop out.

    MONTY’S MUNCH CANTEEN NEWS

    Hello wonderful school community!

My name is Sivine, and together with Anna, we’re thrilled (and slightly terrified) to announce that we’ve joined the canteen team! After years of dedication, efficiency, and pure magic, our incredible Eugenie has handed over the works. She’s left some very big shoes to fill—we suspect they’re lined with organisational superpowers. Thank you, Eugenie, for everything you’ve done to keep the canteen running very close to perfection and efficiency 💛

We’ve been at it for few weeks now, and let’s just say—we’re still finding where the trays go and which button makes the oven not explode. But we’re learning fast, we’re laughing lots, and we promise: your kids will be fed (eventually and safely).

Our busiest days are Thursday and Friday, and we’d love some extra hands! If you’ve got few spare hours, a knack for chaos, or just a great sense of humour, come join us. We’re a work in progress—but a fun one!

Together, we’ll keep the canteen buzzing, the sandwiches rolling, and the laughter echoing.

A big thank you to this week's parent volunteers; Steven, Heidi, Christine and Sylvia! We are always grateful and appreciative for any help.
