Term 4 2025 Newsletter

"STRIVE TO BE YOUR BEST'

From the Admin Team - Mr Jasper, Miss Hoskins and Ms Thomas-Smith

What a year 2025 has been, it is hard to believe that the year has now come and gone. Thank you to all our families for your support this year, together we have achieved so much in what is a short period of time. Thank you to our wonderful staff, School Board, P and C, but most of all the families that make up this great school.

CLUBS

This year, our Clubs program has been a tremendous success, providing opportunities for parents and community members to coach and engage with students. It has also allowed groups of students who don’t usually share classes to come together and explore activities they are passionate about.

In particular, the Design and Technology area has been buzzing with activity this term. Mr Ben Elliott and his team of students have been working hard to create seating for our Aboriginal Bush Tucker Garden, combining creativity, teamwork, and practical skills.

Clubs continue to be a highlight of the school week, fostering collaboration, curiosity, and enjoyment for all students involved.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT (PBS)

In 2025, Cunderdin District High School has seen strong improvements in student collaboration, engagement, and overall positive behaviour. This is thanks to the dedication of Mr Cameron Hill and the PBS committee, who have delivered explicit lessons on our school expectations throughout the year.

The PBS Shop continues to acknowledge secondary students using expectation tickets, while primary classes use expectation tickets to work towards class acknowledgement activities. These programs have helped foster teamwork, motivation, and a strong sense of belonging across the school.

A highlight of the year was when Regional Coordinator, Mrs Christina Lockyer from Western Australia Positive Behaviours Support (WAPBS)  met with staff and students and noted the strong, positive culture evident throughout Cunderdin District High School. Mr Hill was then invited to presented to surrounding school and the Director of the Wheatbelt, who praised the positive impact of our program on students and the school community.

Programs such as Play is the Way continue to support students in developing self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skills.

The positive feedback from external evaluators and the wider community reflects the success of our approach. Thank you to all students, staff, and the PBS committee for creating a supportive and thriving school environment.

WHEATBELT BALL

On December 5, 27 Cunderdin secondary students attended the Wheatbelt Ball, hosted by Dowerin District High School at the Dowerin Town Hall.

The event brought together students from surrounding District High Schools, including Dowerin, York, Brookton, Quairading, Corrigin, and Bruce Rock. It was a fantastic evening filled with music, dancing, and the opportunity to connect with peers from across the Wheatbelt. A big thank you to Dowerin District High School for organising such a wonderful event and inviting us to be part of it.

YEAR 7/8 TRY A TRADE – WESTERN AUSTRALIA COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE CUNDERDIN (WACoA Cunderdin)

On October 30, Cunderdin District High School students were invited to participate in the WACoA Cunderdin try a trade day. Students participated in hands on learning from WACoA Cunderdin staff in woodwork, metalwork, and automotive workshops. This was an invaluable experience for our students to gain insight into potential coursework available to them for Year 11 and 12 studies.  On behalf of Cunderdin District High School, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to WACoA Cunderdin for the opportunity to participate in this great initiative.

KINDERGARTEN INDUCTION

Our 2026 Kindergarten Induction was held on Monday 1 December. It was terrific to meet parents and discuss what occurs in Kindergarten, clarify questions and start to develop a relationship with new families. It was great to see all of our new Kindergarten students enjoying their time in the classroom and in the playground.

2026 STAFFING

This time of the year is always full of mixed emotions and with many much-loved staff members moving on, this year is no exception. On behalf of the staff, students and school community we would like to acknowledge Miss Aleesha Hoskins and like to sincerely thank her for her dedication, professionalism, and the positive impact she has had during her time with us. Her expertise, care, and commitment to our students have been truly appreciated, and her contributions have made a lasting difference in our school community.

Thanks also to Miss Lucy Gibson during her time as both a classroom teacher and DOTT provider. As a graduate stepping into such a demanding role, she has approached every challenge with care, commitment, and a positive attitude. Her thoughtfulness, patience, and willingness to go above and beyond have not gone unnoticed, and her contribution has made a real difference to our students and our school.

Mr Terry Chivers is set for retirement and we would sincerely like to thank him for his outstanding contribution as our D&T specialist area since 2020. His expertise and dedication have provided countless Cunderdin DHS students with a wealth of practical knowledge and skills, helping them to engage confidently with technology and trade. Thanks to for all these staff for their considerable contribution to our school. We wish you all the very best for the future and whatever it may hold. While we will certainly miss your presence, we wish you all the best in your new role and know that you will continue to inspire and lead wherever you go.

The process for the Primary Deputy is still in progress with interviews scheduled this week.  We look forward to welcoming them to our school in 2026.

Next year we are pleased to be welcoming back Mr Jonathon Arnott as Principal while Mr Paul Jasper will resume his position as Secondary Deputy, and Ms Jody Thomas Smith will return to her role as Secondary English and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) teacher.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ms Thomas Smith for her outstanding commitment and hard work in fulfilling the responsibilities of Secondary Deputy throughout Term 4, 2025, while simultaneously managing her teaching duties in English and HASS.

SCHOOL BOARD

Thank you to our School Board Chair, Mrs Tracey Irving. Her leadership has been instrumental in guiding our school through this year of strategic development and renewal. We thank her for her calm, thoughtful, and solution-focused approach, and for the countless hours she dedicated to ensuring strong governance and clear direction for our school.

Thank you to all School Board members, their contributions continue to strengthen our planning, our decision-making, and our confidence in the future we are building. We are grateful for your time, expertise, and unwavering support. Farewell to Mr Dan Byrne who will step down as a community representative on the school board.

CUNDERDIN DHS P & C

Thank you to the P&C for their ongoing commitment to supporting our students and school. Their fundraising efforts and sponsorship of our PBS Shop have once again made a meaningful difference throughout the year.

Special recognition goes to Squiz Hill for her outstanding work in the canteen and the uniform shop. The canteen has been a real highlight for students and staff, and this is a credit to Squiz and the dedicated helpers who assist her each week. Their efforts create a warm, welcoming space that our school genuinely values.

Thank you to our wider school community for your continued support of the P&C. We look forward to many more opportunities and successes in 2026.

YEAR 6 TRANSITION TO SECONDARY SCHOOLING

In Weeks 8 and 9, Cunderdin District High School ran a whole-school transition program from Kindy through to Year 10. Primary classes moved into their 2026 classrooms and cohorts, working on tasks to prepare for the new school year.

As part of the program, Year 6 students and incoming Year 6 students from feeder primary schools participated in a two-day “secondary experience,” giving them a taste of life as a secondary student. On the first morning, they were guided on a school tour by Secondary Student Councillors and met with Principal Mr Paul Jasper and Secondary Deputy Principal Ms Jody Thomas Smith to discuss what secondary schooling involves.

During the two days, students attended lessons in Science, English, HASS, Physical Education, Digital Technology, Language other than Engligh (LOTE), and Mathematics with secondary teachers in their future cohorts. They also spent recess and lunch with current secondary students and participated in Form activities, experiencing a full secondary timetable.

The program allowed students to explore:

  • Differences and similarities between primary and secondary schooling
  • Diary use, homework, and study skills
  • Secondary assessment policies and expectations
  • Understanding a secondary timetable
  • Extra-curricular opportunities
  • Year-level requirements across all subjects

The transition was an exciting learning journey for all students, helping them bond as a group and feel prepared for secondary schooling in 2026.

INTERM SWIMMING

We are in the process of finalising Swimming Lesson for the Pre-Primary to Year 6 students in Term 1, 2026. They will run from Tuesday, 10 February through to Friday, 20 February 2026. Hopefully this will mean the weather is warm and the students would have had an opportunity to build their swimming fitness prior to the Faction Swimming Carnival on Friday, 27 February 2026.

Finally, can I thank all those that have supported myself and the admin team this year in whatever role that may have been. I am confident that the school has taken many fantastic steps in the right direction to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning at Cunderdin District High School. I wish all a safe and festive holiday season and I look forward to seeing what 2026 has in store for us.

Farewell from Miss Hoskins

As I prepare to farewell Cunderdin District High School, I would like to sincerely thank our parents, caregivers and families for the warmth, trust and support you have shown me during my time here. Cunderdin District High School is a truly special school, defined by its strong sense of community, care for one another and shared commitment to supporting every child. It has been a privilege to work alongside your children and to partner with you in supporting their learning, wellbeing and growth. I am incredibly grateful for the relationships I have built and the experiences I will carry with me into the next chapter. I wish all families a safe, happy and restful holiday break.

Kindergarten end of year news with Mrs Freind.

What a wonderful year it has been in Kindergarten! As we reach the end of the year, it’s amazing to see just how much the children have grown, learned, and achieved.

In our Sounds Write lessons, we have been extending our knowledge of letter sounds and beginning to sound out words to build simple CVC (consonant–vowel–consonant) words. It’s been so exciting watching the kindy students become confident early readers and writers as they blend and segment sounds to make words.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring numbers in lots of hands-on ways. We’ve been practising one-to-one correspondence when counting to make sure we count each object only once. We have also been learning about the numbers that come before and after a given number, as well as creating and continuing patterns using colours, shapes, and everyday objects.

During our Talk for Writing lessons, we have loved learning the story Hairy Maclary. The children have become fantastic storytellers, confidently retelling the story using actions and expression.

As the festive season approaches, we have started incorporating Christmas into our literacy and maths activities. The classroom has been filled with excitement, creativity, and lots of Christmas cheer!

We have also started attending sport with Miss Linton in the undercover area, helping us build our gross motor skills and confidence in preparation for Pre-primary next year. Orientation days have also been a wonderful opportunity for the Kindy students to become familiar with their new learning spaces and teachers.

With the weather warming up, we’ve been enjoying plenty of water play and wet sand play outside. It’s been a lovely way to cool down, explore, and have fun together.

It has truly been a fantastic year in Kindergarten. We are so proud of each and every child and how much they have achieved. We wish all our Kindergarten students a wonderful, safe, and happy holiday and can’t wait to see them continue their learning journey in Pre-primary next year!

Pre-primary and Year 1 Class with Miss Reynders

Room 1/2 has enjoyed a busy and exciting term filled with hands-on learning, new discoveries, and plenty of memorable moments. Students have embraced each week with enthusiasm, supporting one another and showing wonderful growth in both their learning and teamwork. With Christmas just around the corner, the excitement in the classroom has been building, and it has been lovely to see the joy and anticipation as we head into the festive season.

Our Class Focus:

This term, we have been focusing on helping students develop responsibility and respect for our school equipment. Through explicit PBS lessons, class discussions, and engaging activities, students have been learning what it looks like to care for shared resources and use materials safely and appropriately in the classroom.

We have also been recognising and celebrating moments when students show responsibility, cooperation, and care for their learning environment. By highlighting these positive behaviours, we are encouraging all students to take pride in their classroom, look after the equipment they use each day, and work together to keep our learning spaces safe and organised.

Writing:

This term, our writing program has continued to explore both storytelling and procedure writing. We began with storytelling using the Talk for Writing approach and the text The Gingerbread Man. Students loved joining in with the actions, creating their own story maps, and helping with shared writing. These experiences have supported them in understanding how a story flows and in building confidence with writing complete, meaningful sentences.

We have now shifted our focus to procedure writing. Through the text How to Catch a Gingerbread Man, students are learning how to break a task into clear, simple steps and explain each one in order. They are becoming more confident in organising their thoughts and sharing their ideas in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence.

Reading:

This term, our reading program has continued to help students deepen their understanding of the stories and texts they encounter. We have been practising important comprehension strategies, including questioning and predicting, which support students in making connections and thinking more carefully about what they read.

To make lessons meaningful and engaging, we have also completed a picture book study using The Gruffalo. Students have enjoyed exploring the text’s features, including characters, setting, the problem and resolution, and the feelings of different characters. We have also been discussing different types of sentences and how they contribute to the meaning of the story. These activities have supported students in developing a richer understanding of texts and building confidence as thoughtful, active readers.

Mathematics:

This term, students have explored a wide range of mathematical concepts and skills. They have analysed teen numbers, explored shapes and time, and investigated equal groups, chance, probability, and statistics. Students have practised counting-on strategies, addition and subtraction strategies, and used tally charts and other ways to represent and interpret data. We have also begun exploring area, building early foundations for measurement. It has been wonderful to see students grow in confidence as they apply these skills to solve problems. Their learning has been supported through fun, interactive games during maths rotations and creative, maths-based activities.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS):

This term in HASS, our focus has been on Geography. In the early weeks, students explored different types of places—natural, managed, and constructed—examining their features and learning ways we can care for and protect them. We have also practised mapping local places, including our school. More recently, we have looked at how places have changed over time, how different weather conditions can affect them, and have continued learning about Our Local Community. Through discussions, activities, and reflections, students have dived deeper into the ways people can care for places, developing a stronger understanding of their connection to the environment and the positive impact they can have on their community.

Music:

This term in Music, students have continued to build on their understanding of key musical elements, including beat, rhythm, tempo, pitch, and dynamics. They have also been introduced to musical notation and have been learning how to write and read simple music. Students have enjoyed exploring these concepts through clapping, movement, singing, and playing instruments, as well as creating their own original music pieces. These activities have helped them develop both their creativity and confidence, and it has been fantastic to see how they are applying their skills to express ideas and emotions through music.

Design and Technology:

In Room 1/2, students have been exploring different materials and the properties of products. Using our writing text How to Catch a Gingerbread Man as inspiration, they have applied the full design process—planning, designing, creating, and testing—to design and build their own traps. Students have enjoyed experimenting with different materials and strategies to make their traps effective. We have also investigated how food is produced and where it comes from, helping students make connections between products, materials, and the wider world.

Exciting Events:

This term, we had a wonderful class assembly, where students proudly performed the song You Are My Sunshine for their friends and families. Following the assembly, we enjoyed a lovely morning tea together, giving students and families time to chat, celebrate, and enjoy each other’s company.

On Monday, 24th November, we celebrated Fairy Bread Day. As a class, we wrote the steps for making fairy bread together, practising our procedural writing skills and learning how to sequence instructions clearly. After this, students enjoyed making their own fairy bread, following the steps we had written and sharing their creations with friends. The activity was a fun and engaging way to combine writing, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Year 1/2 Classroom happenings with Mrs Chant

Term 4 has flown by, and the end of year is near. We have had another fantastic term with lots of fun and learning.

This term, we were very lucky to welcome Miss Ebany into our classroom for three weeks. Miss Ebany is studying to be a primary teacher and decided to do one of her placements with us. We enjoyed having Miss Ebany and showing her all about teaching and learning in a country school. We hope she enjoyed her experience.

In Talk 4 Writing this term, we have been learning about superheroes and sidekicks. In week 6, some ‘baddies came and trashed out classroom while we were out enjoying the sunshine and having crunch and sip. Mrs Chant was very sad about the state of the classroom. Luckily, there was a superhero and his sidekick to help us out. We then learnt about persuasive writing and wrote texts about why every superhero should have a sidekick. For reading, we studied the book “Where the Forest Meets the Sea” by Jeannie Baker. It is based on the Daintree Rainforest in Queensland and how important it is to conserve the rainforest and its history. We had a lot of great discussion about what should be done as well as about how the author portrayed her story and made us feel. We then moved on to reading a new book called “The Imagineer” by Christopher Cheng. This was a story about a girl who like to imagine and invent new things and her grandfather who had a shed full of amazing bits and pieces she could use for her inventions. This story created a lot of discussion about how inventions have changed our lives and what new inventions could help make our lives better. We have also done a lot of work using alliteration and onomatopoeia.

In Mathematics, we have been honing our fluency with addition and subtraction number facts by doing Ninja Maths at the beginning of our maths lessons. Students are given 100 questions to complete in three minutes. Everyone is doing so well, and we have all levelled up as Ninjas. We have also been doing a lot of other maths work, including money, area, sharing and grouping and using number lines.

The 1/2 class would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holidays, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Year 4/5 Classroom with Miss Gibson

As we approach the end of Term 4, our Year 3/4 students continue to show remarkable resilience and adaptability. Despite recent staff changes, they have remained positive, focused, and dedicated to their learning. Their ability to adjust so smoothly, support one another, and stay engaged has been truly impressive. It has been a pleasure to watch their maturity, confidence, and skills grow throughout the term, and they should be incredibly proud of the way they are finishing the year.

Literacy In Reading

Students are diving into our class novel The One and Only Ivan, exploring its characters, themes, and unique narrative voice. In Writing, they are strengthening their persuasive letter-writing skills, developing clear arguments on topics including whether wild animals should be kept in captivity.

Mathematics

Students are building fast and accurate multiplication recall through daily Ninja Maths. They are also practising recognising and using Australian money, working with grid references on maps, and developing their understanding of measurement and conversions.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

Students are expanding their mapping skills, learning Australia’s states, territories, capital cities, and neighbouring countries. They are also exploring First Nations maps, comparing cultural representations of Country with modern political maps to deepen their understanding of Australia’s diverse histories.

Music

In Music, students are exploring beat and tempo through body percussion and small-group composition. Their creativity, teamwork, and growing confidence continue to shine.

Year 5/6 Classroom with Miss Harper

This term has been a whirlwind! Joining the Year 5/6 class has been an absolute pleasure. From the very first week, I’ve been welcomed by a group of kind, curious, and energetic learners.

For our Year 6 students, this term marks the end of their primary school journey, and what a wonderful way to finish! For our Year 5s, it’s been a great opportunity to begin to step up as leaders and prepare for their final year of primary school.

A highlight of this term was our visit to play games with the local seniors. Students played a variety of games alongside the seniors, showing fantastic sportsmanship and enthusiasm.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on narrative writing and developing our ability to create stories with interesting characters and detailed settings. Students worked hard to design their own dragons and then write, edit, and publish their final pieces. We also explored the world of advertising, where students created their own spy gadgets and developed marketing campaigns to present to the class.

In Mathematics, we have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as shapes and symmetry. Students have demonstrated persistence and collaboration, particularly during group investigations and problem-solving activities.

In Economics, the Year 5s learned about wants and needs, as well as different types of resources. They designed their own theme parks, considering the wants and needs of their visitors. The Year 6s explored business and budgeting, practising how to create successful budgets that balance wants and needs. They planned their dream holidays to any location in the world while staying within budget! Throughout the term, we’ve also enjoyed using Class Bank, where students earn money for classroom jobs, pay rent, and practise budgeting and saving to purchase classroom rewards.

In Drama, we learned how to analyse and respond to performances. Students applied these skills by creating “Shark Tank” style product pitches for their spy gadgets. They worked hard to use persuasive language, expression and creativity to convince the class that their gadget was the best.

It has been special to share this final term of primary school with our Year 6 students. They have shown maturity, humour, and kindness throughout the term and should all be proud of how far they’ve come. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break!

Secondary English and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

Year 7/8 English the students have been studying a novel called "The Year the Maps Changed". The themes and ideas have linked with their HaSS topics from Geography last term and Civics and Citizenship this term. Their thorough preparation for exams has resulted in some very high scores. The Year 9/10 students have been studying documentaries. They have been looking at intergenerational community programs and viewed "Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds" and "Old People's Home for Teenagers". They were able to see the links with their Civics and Citizenships topics and made very mature and insightful comments on the importance of such programs.

Secondary happenings

The secondary students have been working hard this term preparing for exams. Their adherence to exam conditions and determination to answer every question on every exam certainly showed them being their best.

It has been a busy term with some uncertainty with staffing, throughout it all the secondary students have shown resilience and fantastic school spirit in supporting each other and the staff to give everyone the best opportunity to get their work done.

We have had Shani Webb, school psychologist, deliver Teen Mental Health First Aid training to all of our secondary students. The level of participation and willingness to learn how to provide help if it is needed was encouraging.

The students are looking forward to the end of year events like the Ball in Dowerin, and the pool party.

Thank you to Miss Emma Bradbury for arranging the movie night where families got to watch How to Train Your Dragon under the stars.

Science and Mathematics with Mrs Tozer

Year 9/10 Science:

This term we have been looking at Motion. Students have been exploring how forces and mass affect the motion of objects. For their assessment, students (in groups) produced their own videos using Newton’s Laws of motion to describe the effect of interactions between objects. The videos were all very entertaining and showcased the originality of the students. I especially enjoyed the ‘out-takes’. We ended the term looking at work and energy.

Year 7/8 Science:

This term we have been looking at forces and how they can affect the shape, direction, or speed of an object. Students especially enjoyed looking at non-contact forces (magnets) and contact forces (friction and air resistance). For their assessment students (in groups) designed and made parachutes of different sizes to see if they could land their skydiver (a washer) gently on the ground. We ended the term looking at different types of energy.

Year 5/6 Science:

Started the term without a fulltime teacher before moving up to the high school science laboratory to do Science once a week. We have been looking at Earthquakes and volcanoes, and how scientists study and measure the force and destruction caused by such events. Students were very interested to look at famous Earthquake events from around the world including the Meckering Earthquake of 1968.

Year 9/10 Maths:

This term we have been investigating Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry and their applications to solve problems using triangles. We had a break in the middle of the term to revise for exams and the year 9/10 camp, before finishing the term investigating statistical data and graphing.

Year 7/8 Maths:

This term we have been learning to find the perimeter, area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes. We also had a break in the middle of the term for revision and exams (but no camp). The term finished with us learning how to solve basic algebraic equations and solve problems using these equations.

Design and Technology

We have been incredibly lucky to have Mr Ben Elliott working with students in Design and Technology this term! Secondary students have participated in a Woodwork club on Friday afternoons and year 5/6 students have had their first taste of Woodwork lessons. Meanwhile lower primary classes have created several projects including musical instruments, bridge design challenge and mini plant holders. Thank you Ben for sharing all of your expertise with us here at CDHS!

Design and Technology

Physical Education

With all the carnivals done for 2025 we are back to regular programming in Physical Education classes! Students have enjoyed playing a variety of sports throughout the term, including soccer, touch rugby, volleyball, tee-ball and cricket. Below are some photos from the 5/6 cricket lessons and 7/8 volleyball lessons.

Year 9/10 Camp

In week 8 the Year 9.10 class attended their Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)/Careers camp at Woodman Point. Students participated in a wide variety of activities including an excursion to Rottnest Island, History tour around Fremantle and a guided tour to HMAS Stirling on Garden Island. Other highlights included beach fishing, bowling and a visit to the Fremantle Markets. All students were wonderful representatives for Cunderdin District High School  throughout the week and came home with an appreciation of WA's maritime history and future careers inspiration!
