Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

The School Board met last week for our first of two meetings this term.  The meeting included healthy discussion relating to collated 2023 student data across a wide range of areas including literacy, numeracy and the social-emotional domain.  Given teachers had spent considerable time analysing the data, the Board was also privy to the initial planning thoughts under consideration.  During the meeting there was also a deep dive into the draft Business Plan that will span the 2024 to 2026 period. Prior to the next meeting, refinements will be made to this document and draft versions of the 2024 Operational Plans shared.

Our current group of Year 5 children have been undertaking a leadership course in preparation for nomination and selection of Student Councillors and House Captains for next year.  While the course culminates with the selection process on Friday, last week witnessed the “Great Race” through Perth’s CBD and the ability to showcase their leadership skills.  Based on these efforts, our student leadership for next year is in good hands.

Finally, next Friday we recognise Careers Day where we challenge gender stereotypes in society.  Our children are our greatest asset and as such they should be encouraged to seek any career that will allow them to maximise their potential, regardless of gender.  What career would your child like to pursue?

Steve Manzoney Community Service Award 2023

Following a request to extend the nomination timeline for this award, nominations will be accepted up to Thursday, November 16.

This is an annual award presented at the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony in December.

The award has been in place since 2004 and was established to honour the hard work and commitment to the school and Duncraig community by one of our parents, Mr Steve Manzoney who sadly passed away in September 2004. In 1999 Steve took up a position on the P&C social committee and committed an enormous amount of time and energy organising a variety of functions that raised valuable funds for the school and brought the community together. In 2001 he also was the P&C Treasurer.  He was always willing to lend a hand around the school, helping out on carnival days and other school events. He was someone you could rely on.  Steve was also involved in the Duncraig community, coaching basketball, umpiring T-ball and actively involved in the junior football as a coach and runner.

We are now requesting nominations for this award.  The criteria can be found on the nomination form which can be downloaded within this article.  A copy will also be sent via Connect.

Please return the form to the office marked “Attention to the Principal” or directly via email (peter.meston@education.wa.edu.au) by Friday, November 16.

Cyber Safety Workshop

While doing the cyber safety workshop we learned about how on online gaming can hacked and how to be safe online. We also learnt some online purchases can be dangerous and cause money to be lost. We have learnt how to be safe online and to turn off any location. We know to ask a parent before publishing something online.

Year 6 Camp

Woodman Point Camp Recount

By Ayla & Aliana

Last week on the 25th of October, the two year six classes went on camp at Woodman Point. We were split into four activity groups with four teachers; Ms Powley, Mr Lillico, Mrs Barrett and, Mr Delpino.

In these groups we were challenged with eight activities to push our boundaries whilst being resilient. These activities included flying fox, abseiling, rock climbing, bike ride, archery, orienteering, surf lifesaving and raft building. Each activity taught us to be confident in ourselves and others.

Outside of our activities, we continued teamwork by constantly playing soccer. We even played another school that was on their camp. People who didn't want to play, showed their support by cheering on from the side-lines.

A highlight of camp was a game called Escape from Quarantine. This was kind of a version of spotlight, this game was very enjoyable for everyone, including the teachers! We had a games night consisting of a series of one-minute challenges in teams. The second night was movie night which resulted in half of the year falling asleep!

Overall, camp was the highlight of the year, no…not just the year, but all of Primary School!

Colour Blast

Despite the 37 degree heat all students from K- 6 enjoyed being coated in slime, chalk and saturated with water. We loved seeing many parents support this great event and help out where needed. The winners of the raffle prizes were:

Adventure World Family Day Pass: Ellie B - PP Red

Nintendo Switch Lite: Ivy G - Room 4

Thank you to Mr Richard Van Wyk for the amazing photos

Year 5 Leadership Excursion

🏁 The Great Race 🏁

By: Taya G & Meera V

On Tuesday 31st October, the Year 5 students of Glengarry arrived at Stirling Gardens in the city for the race. Each year, students from Year 5 compete in a race full of challenges and riddles. We spent ages preparing for the big day, making bandannas, and practicing a chant. Not only was it fun, but it also helped us develop our leadership skills for next year. We had to take pictures, do dances, and sing at the top of our lungs, but most importantly, we had to work together as a team. It was a very close game, with the Leadership Lions taking the victory (and a medal) with 89 points, and The Racing Rats and Barrett's Bandits tied in second place only one point behind. In the end, we all had fun, and the day ended with a nice, refreshing ice cream and some spooky stories.

Good luck to the next Year fives and GO LEADERSHIP LIONS!🦁🏁

Careers Morning

Empowering Futures!

Friday 3 November, the students from Room 11 and 12 hosted a Careers Morning to explore our future potential. We engaged with a number of professionals who shared their career journeys and challenged gender stereotypes in the workforce. We were visited by a physiotherapist in the army, a detective on the WA Police Force, a paramedic, a nurse, a veterinarian, and a FIFO electrician. The morning made us think about our interests and what career paths we may want to take so that we can reach for the stars in our future careers.

Kindergarten Busy Bee

The Kindergarten playground enjoyed lots of maintenance work from many parent helpers at our recent Spring Busy Bee. Many parents assisted with preparation tasks and some finishing off jobs too! Our sandpits have never been this full for a very long time. Enjoy the photos of their clever work...

Thank you again from Jenny McFarlane and the Kindergarten teaching team.

Sunny's State Championships Success

After a very successful competition season with notable placings across all apparatus, the season ended with State Championships.

Sunny’s team took out 1st in the state for National Level 6 🥇

With her consistency in scores across apparatus, as an individual Sunny has ranked 8th all around in the state, which is also incredible given she is the youngest competitor in the level. She also placed 5th on beam.

Atti Art

I repurposed an old frame I collected from a road verge & worked for many months prepping the canvas, sketching a landscape & then painting with acrylic. My art was then selected to be showcased in the City of Belmont Art Exhibition in the youth group.

What’s been happening….

It’s Kambarang season so we see colours and flowers exploding all around us. It is also the most likely time of the year that you'll encounter a snake as the reptiles start to awaken from their hibernation and look to make the most of the warm to assist them in getting enough energy to look for food. We are seeing bobtails and frogs at school.

It's also a time that many young families of birds will be singing out for their parents to feed them. Koolbardies (magpies) will be out protecting their nests and their babies. Wattle birds will be swooping. Try to stay away from walking near nests.

Room 6’s vegetables still need to be planted out into the kitchen garden. The bugs and caterpillars have discovered our garden, so it’s time to spray with harmless white oil and pull the little critters off by hand!

Room 5 & 6’s native plants, near Alfreton Drive- now have a few more natives.  If you are passing, please pull any weeds or grass creeping into the plants or give them a drink. The shed will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays so you can fill up a watering can.

Seeds in the nursery, are ready to plant by Rooms 1&2.

This bobtail was in the HOPE shed, stuck in a bucket…saved and released to the bush by Beau. This Motorbike frog was also stuck in a bucket…saved by Ben. We will be keeping the buckets on their sides to stop this happening again.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Art in the Park

I remember sitting in my Nana’s lounge room painting all afternoon at the age of 8. It was my first ‘Paint by Numbers’ set. I was amazed how something that looked like blobs of different shades of green up close, became a landscape of beautiful trees and farmland when you stepped back from the painting. Today I still marvel at the simple techniques that produce a picture. This term I have introduced ‘Art in the Park’ to the students. Gradually every student will have the opportunity to experience some simple art techniques on a Wednesday lunchtime. The setting under the Jacaranda trees by the library is calming. The art activity is creative, yet relaxing. So far the experience has been very positive for the students who have signed up. Recently Djeran (y 3-4) did ‘Leaf rubbings and crayon resist painting.’ See the photos.

The first group from Bunuru (y 5-6) flourished during their Island ‘Paint by Numbers’ canvas work. Their project took four consecutive lunchtimes to complete and some stayed for the four lunchtimes whilst others tag teamed and let their classmate paint their canvas. Cooperation and Collaboration values were on display! If your child asks to go to Kmart art and craft section you can blame me! They are asking because they have flourished during the art workshop and want to do more. Art can be done anywhere, doesn’t involve a screen and is so calming and creative at the same time. For some it can become a lifelong hobby, a happy place, a place for self-care and processing one’s thoughts for the day. Have I hooked you yet?
