Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and carers,

Firstly, ACER PAT testing is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. These assessments are essential for benchmarking student performance across key learning areas, allowing us to track progress and ensure we continue delivering high-quality education.

Additionally, our Grade 8 students have been diligently preparing for the PNG National Examinations with their recent Mock Exams. This experience is invaluable in helping them develop confidence and find out where they need to improve in preparation for later in the year. Well done to all our students for their commitment to their studies!

Our Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) conclude this week, marking the end of a term filled with enriching experiences beyond the classroom. Thanks to all teachers, parents, and community members who dedicated their time and energy to running these programs. Your contributions help enhance the holistic education we provide at LIS.

For those interested in leading an ECA next term, we encourage parents and community members to reach out to the relevant Head of Campus. Your involvement makes a significant difference, and we look forward to seeing new activities in the coming months.

I also wish to congratulate our Boarding House on the completion of their new common room—a fantastic addition that enhances the already excellent facilities we offer to our boarding students. Providing a comfortable and supportive environment for our boarders is a priority, and this new space will further enrich their experience at LIS.

Finally, we extend a warm welcome to all new families who have recently joined the LIS community. It has been wonderful to see fresh faces around our school, and we look forward to many more new enrolments in Semester 2.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Warm regards

Mr Greg Neville

PAT Testing:

Next week our PAT testing for Grade 1 to Grade 8 commences. All Students in these grades will sit the English, Maths, and Reading progress tests. This will enable their teachers to support their students with extra intervention where needed in these three areas. Parents will receive the PAT Test reports with the end of semester 1 report.

UK Biology Challenge Grade 9 and 10:

We are delighted to share that our Grade 9 and 10 Biology students participated in the UK Biology Challenge online. This involved two tests covering content from Grade 9 and 10 Biology each lasting 25 minutes long. All students that participated in the correct age range gained a participation certificate.

Four of our students managed to achieve special recognition (See Pictures Below):

Giaan Gima achieved a Bronze Medal in the challenge scoring 83% across the two tests.

John Morgan was Highly Commended just missing out on the Bronze Medal.

Caitleen Boas and Kelthon Ghona were Commended for their scores.

This highlights are continued commitment and focus on STEM across the school.

Upcoming Teacher Only Day and Public Holiday:

Monday 16th June is a scheduled teacher only day, on this day teachers will be focused on professional learning alongside planning and preparation for Term 3.

Tuesday 17th June is a schedule public holiday.

Students should not come to school on either day.

Track and Field Spirit Carnival:

From Week 6 in PE lessons all students Prep to Grade 10 will be covering track and field sports to support them in this year’s Spirit carnival. Grade 11 and 12 will be participating and have the opportunity for afterschool and lunchtime training. We expect all Day and Boarding students to be present for these days in Week 9.

Drone Lunchtime ECA Opportunities:

In the secondary school we have started a sign out system for the school drones at lunchtimes. Students can come and sign out one of our 5 drones for use in lunchtime and then sign it back in at the end of the lunch period. So far students have enjoyed having this opportunity and we welcome all to gain experience in flying the drones.

STEM Fair:

Students should have signed up their groups for the upcoming STEM fair themed, ‘Putting an End to Plastic’. We encourage all students from Grade 5 to Grade 12 to make the effort and participate in the fairs. In the final heat in week 9 we will have prizes will be available for the winners.

School Arrival Times:

As a reminder to all parents and guardians, supervision of students on the primary campus begins at 7.30am with students able to enter classes from 7.45am. We advise all parents to ensure they do not drop their children off earlier than 7.30am. If students arrive between 7.30am and 7.45am they will be supervised in the hall and need to remain in there seated quietly until they can enter classroom.

Head of Primary Campus Notices

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to this week's edition! In this edition I’d like to stress again on the importance of campus safety during student drop-off and pick-up—a priority that ensures a secure and efficient routine for all children, families, and staff.

We deeply appreciate the cooperation and attention of parents who have been diligently following our safety procedures. Your commitment helps maintain a smooth flow of traffic, ensures students enter and exit safely, and supports a structured and organised environment.

Campus Safety

To support campus safety, there is a new procedure for entry and exit. The campus entry gate will remain locked during school hours, and all parents or visitors arriving between 8:30 AM and 3 PM will need to report to the security desk for assistance. At 3 PM, the gate will be opened, allowing parents to enter and collect their child/ren from the hall.

We also want to emphasise the importance of lesson completion and structured transitions at the end of the day. Packing up and maintaining focus in the final minutes of class are vital to ensure students retain key learning. Minimising disruptions helps keep learning on track.

School Ending time and Late pick up

A reminder that school ends at 12:00 PM for ELC and Preschool half-day learners and 3:00 PM for the rest of the school. Students in Afterschool ECA programs should be picked up by 4:00 PM.

Picking up students on time is important. It ensures they get enough rest and avoids unnecessary waiting. Regular late pick-ups can be disruptive, so we ask that parents/carers avoid this.

If you will be late, please inform your child’s teacher in advance. Your cooperation helps us maintain a safe and organised environment.

Head of Secondary Campus Notices

Dear All,

Thank you for another productive and successful week. The past few days have been particularly busy, with various assessments taking place—an expected rhythm in secondary education. I sincerely appreciate the patience and dedication of both teachers and students in ensuring that all academic activities proceeded smoothly without disruption. We now look forward to three more exciting weeks before concluding the term for the second-semester break.

Below are some important notices and updates for your information and appropriate action.

Grade 10 and 12 Intervention Sessions

Starting next week, intervention sessions for Year 10 and 12 students will commence. These sessions are designed to provide additional academic support, enhance comprehension, and improve overall performance in key subjects. The primary goal is to help every student reach their full potential.

The sessions will focus on core subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Science, along with other areas where targeted learning can be beneficial.

We strongly encourage students who require extra help to participate actively. These sessions will be instrumental in advancing academic progress and preparing for upcoming examinations.

For further details contact the Head of Campus or the Secondary Learning and Assessment Coordinator. A separate flyer with additional information will be sent out shortly.

PNG 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Our school is planning to commemorate Papua New Guinea’s 50th Anniversary, and we invite interested secondary school parents to join the organizing committee. Your contributions will be invaluable in planning and ensuring a meaningful observance of this important event.

For those interested, please contact Ms. Julianne Ngasoi at jngasoi@lis.iea.ac.pg

Grade 10 Written Expression Examination

Year 10 students will sit for the Grade 10 Written Expression Examination next week. This will be the first English paper, with the second paper scheduled for October alongside other objective assessments.

Students are advised to take care of their well-being in the days leading up to the exam and maintain focus. With two practice sessions completed, I am confident that our students will perform well. I take this opportunity to wish all Grade 10 students the very best in their upcoming Written Expression Examination.

Mock Examination Updates

Both Grade 10 and 12 students have undergone multiple mock exams throughout the past two terms. The final objective mock exams are scheduled for Week 8 next term, serving as a crucial preparation step before the final examinations in October 2025.

These structured practice sessions, combined with intervention programs, will be highly beneficial in helping students refine their skills and readiness for their final examinations.

IGCSE Mock Examinations

In Week 1 of Term 3, mock examinations are scheduled for IGCSE students in Year 10. Please note that PNG students will not participate in these mock exams and will instead be placed into a separate class for further intervention.

For those seeking past papers for CIE IGCSE courses, they can be accessed here:

🔗 [Past Papers for CIE IGCSE](https://papers.xtremepape.rs/index.php?dirpath=./CAIE/IGCSE/&order=0)

ACT Scaling Test

Grade 12 students enrolled in the ACT program will undertake mock tests for ACT Scaling Test (AST) Papers 1 & 2 on Wednesday of Week 1 in Term 3, followed by Paper 3 on Thursday.

Unlike other exams, AST assessments emphasize general reasoning and critical analysis across multiple subjects. Since the questions are unpredictable, students should focus on understanding the types of questioning involved rather than traditional revision.

Students should ensure these dates are marked in their planners. The final AST exam will take place in August.

STEM Fair and Spirit Carnival

Further updates will soon be shared with parents regarding our upcoming STEM Fair and Spirit Carnival, scheduled for Week 9 this term.

More details will be provided via email and the app, covering:

·        The first heat of the STEM Fair for secondary students on Friday of Week 7, starting at 2:00 PM.

·        The Track and Field Spirit Carnival, which will be held at the primary campus on the final day of the school term.

We encourage maximum participation in both events, to make sure that our students enjoy an engaging and enriching experience.

Thank you all for your continued cooperation and dedication in making Week 6 a success. We look forward to another exciting few weeks ahead as we wrap up the term with these upcoming events.

Wishing you all a productive and fulfilling week ahead!

Common Room Now Open!

We're thrilled to share some wonderful news with all our boarding families! The common room is now officially open and ready for all boarding students to enjoy.

We envision this vibrant new space becoming a true home away from home for our students. It's designed to be a versatile hub where students can unwind after a busy day, collaborate on projects or simply gather to build lasting friendships and create cherished memories.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to Mr. Neville for his incredible dedication and unwavering support. Without his commitment, this much-anticipated space would not have become a reality.

We're confident that the common room will quickly become an integral part of the boarding experience, offering a comfortable and engaging environment for all. Your children are already beginning to enjoy it and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it has on their daily lives.
