Deputy Principal's Notices

ACT Moderation:

As part of our commitment to our delivery of international courses this week Mr Winas and Mr Pokayeh have represented LIS in Canberra at ACT Moderation Day 2. During this time both Mr Winas and Mr Pokayeh will contribute to quality assurance of student work by moderation. This is beneficial for teachers individually and the school as whole. It provides valuable information regarding the work of students submitted across all the ACT schools and creates good links between us and other schools delivering the course. I am sure both teachers have found this process rewarding and we look forward to them sharing their insights of the process on their return to Lae.

Primary Assembly:

Today was the Grade 2 learning assembly and it was great to see them share their work over the past few weeks. Class assemblies provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop their confidence in talking about their learning and public speaking. Well done Grade 2.

Grade 12 Tertiary Education Choices:

This year we introduced our new careers program to support students in their choices for tertiary education. It is paramount for students to act on the advice they have been given to ensure they have every opportunity to gain a placement in their desired courses. Their careers teachers will be providing feedback on their choices ahead of our Grade 12 Tertiary Selection Day in week 1 of term 4, details of this will follow before the end of this term.

We will be beginning the initial conversations with our current Grade 11 students with regards to their aspirations for education post-LIS in Term 4 as well.

Revision and Past Papers:

As our Grade 8, 10, and 12 approach their exams in T4 I want to highlight the need for good revision habits and past paper practice. Teachers will be supporting students with past papers from both the PNG National Exams and any International exams they may be taking.

We ask parents to support their children in revision. You can help by monitoring progress and time spent on past paper practice and revision. Motivation is key so discussing good study habits like those in the graphics below will further reinforce the advice we are giving to all students.

Together we can help all our students to reach their best potential.

Early Learning Matters Week:

We are fast approaching our celebration of Early Learning in the primary. We ask all our parents to share the date of our open morning to anyone they think may be interested in seeing the excellent teaching, learning, and facilities we have at LIS.

The open morning is between 9am and 11am on Friday 22nd August.

School Arrival and Departure Times:

Parents are reminded that school finishes at 3pm on both campuses. Students should only remain past pick up time 3.00pm – 3.15pm in secondary if they are participating in intervention classes or a sports ECA. Students not participating should leave the secondary campus promptly after 3pm.

ECAs finish have now finished in primary. All primary students should be picked up promptly between 3.00pm – 3.15pm. In the rare event of a late pick up, due to unforeseen issues, parents should be contacting the school office to advise them. Students should not be regularly picked up late as the school is unable to provide supervision for them.

The school bus service is available as an option if parents are unable to pick their children up at the required times.

As a reminder to all parents and guardians, supervision of students on the primary campus begins at 7.30am with students able to enter classes from 7.45am. We advise all parents to ensure they do not drop their children off earlier than 7.30am. If students arrive between 7.30am and 7.45am they will be supervised in the hall and need to remain in there seated quietly until they can enter classroom.

We have had notification that the ‘Early Learning Matters’ week date has been changed. This has now been moved on our calendar to reflect this change and to ensure we coincide our Early Years celebrations in the correct week of the term. The week will now be in school week 6 this term between 18th – 22nd August and our Early Years open morning will be on Friday 22nd August, more information will follow closer to the ‘Early Learning Matters’ week.

Head of Primary Campus Notices

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to this week’s edition of Primary News.

Parent teacher conference

Student progress meetings are a great way to provide a foundation for a partnership between families and schools. These meetings encourage home-school linkages and help support children’s learning when:

  • Parents and teachers engage in dialog about the student’s learning and development on a regular basis.
  • Parents and teachers are willing to listen and learn from each other.
  • Parents and teachers come to the conference prepared to ask questions and share information that will benefit the student.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held in Weeks 6 and 7. Teachers have sent out meeting invitations this week. Please make time available to attend this meeting.

Next week, our focus will be on STEM learning—that means exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths in ways that connect to what we’re learning in class. There will be hands-on activities, creative thinking, and plenty of smiles as we discover new things together.

We’d love for you to join us for a special Open Day on Friday. Come and see the amazing things your child has been learning and creating! Bring a friend along to share the fun with.

SRC Fundraising – T-shake sales

We’re happy to share that the SRC T-Shake fundraiser has come to a successful end! A big thank you to everyone who supported the fundraiser by purchasing a T-Shake. Your kindness and generosity helped make this event a great success.

Thanks to your support, the SRC raised enough money and proudly presented the funds to our school principal to go towards the SRC project. We’re excited to see the positive impact this will have on our school community.

Hat policy

Students are encouraged to wear their hats at all times when outdoor. Please ensure your child comes with his/her school hat/cap to school every day. students without hat will not participate in outdoor activities including playtime. Class teachers will reach out to parents of students who are not wearing the correct school hat//cap in school.

Carpark Safety Reminder

To help keep everyone safe, please follow these important carpark rules when entering and exiting the school:

  • Drive slowly — the speed limit is 5 km/h at all times
  • Stop behind the cones — do not drive past them
  • Avoid stopping on the crossing line — keep it clear for pedestrians
  • Be considerate — watch out for other drivers and pedestrians
  • If you’ll be parked for a longer time, please use the parking space under the tree

Your care and attention help make our school a safer place for everyone. Thank you for your support and cooperation!

Head of Boarding

Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome to LIS Boarding House section of this week’s newsletter.

Theme for the term: Getting closer to the ideal outcome.

We expect our students to be able to consistently demonstrate at the end of the year, respectful, responsible and safe behavior. Boarding parents are working hard to achieve these outcomes through the weekly discussion of our step to success and the weekly virtue discussion.

Weekly Virtue Discussion

This week, we have been discussing Resilience. It is important that our students bounce back from every set back and move forward towards achieving their goals.

  • Resilience – the ability to recover from setback and keep striving.
  • Why it matters - The path to ideal outcomes is rarely smooth

I kindly, invite parents to join us in talking to your child about the virtues when you get a chance to talk to them. Next week discussion will be on integrity.

Highlands Trip

Principal and I will be visiting Hagen, Kundiawa and Goroka next week to meet with parents and promote LIS boarding house. Kindly pass the message to any interested parents and individuals in these three locations to meet with us and learn why many parents past and present continue to choose boarding at LIS. It’s an opportunity to hear testimonies of our past students on how their boarding experience helped set them apart at the work place. We will also share exciting stories from our current students on how LIS boarding is assisting them

Our meeting times are as follows;

  • Kundiawa - 5pm Tuesday 19th August at Kundiawa International School
  • Hagen - 5pm Wednesday 20th August at Hagen International School
  • Goroka - 5pm Thursday 21st August at Goroka International School

Reminders

  • All parents and guardians are asked to adhere the sign out procedure.
  • Unless in the case of emergency, visitors or guardians will not be allowed to enter the campus after 6pm. This will ensure students are not disturbed from the scheduled activities and boarding staff are not disturbed from their supervision.
  • We are experiencing rain most evening and the place is cold. We encourage all students to have an umbrella and a school issued coat.

Warm regards,

John Kalenda

Head of Boarding
