From the Principal

 Dear families & friends,

Well done to everyone on the fabulous costumes for our Book Week celebrations and thank you to families who supported children with their costumes and came along to watch our parade!

Auslan Choir

Once again we have a small group of students who auditioned and were chosen to perform in the Festival of Music Auslan choir. The 8 students (Annie, Stella, Nina, Crisnage, Tori, Evie, Zofia and Tess) have been practicing regularly at school and at home with support of Sharni and will perform later in September to an audience of over 2000 people. We wish them well and I look forward to seeing them represent our school!

Sports Day & Colour Run

We are looking forward to seeing lots of you at our Sports Day this week and Colour Run.  If you would like to help out on the day please see Di for BBQ instructions, Kelly for Colour Run jobs and class teachers for any support needed during events. We will have our Felixstow Cafe area to sit and relax and have a cup of tea or coffee (from the kitchen, this is only available for Adults)

Keep an eye out for further events this term including Learning Expo, Piano Recital evening and the last day of term 'Crazy hair Day' fundraiser which has been organised by a group of students in Laura's class.

Remember after Sports Day we have a closure day, so enjoy the longer weekend!

Felixstow Highlights

Student School Value Awards

In Ban Ba Ban Bayla this week, ten students received an award for displaying the school values of respect, responsibility and compassion or showing one or more of the attributes of the six global competencies (6 C's); character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Well done to the following students;

Juniors; Violet, Thomas, Gurbaaz and Mark

Primary; Charlotte, Helena, Ella, Jaiveer, Oliver and Ethan

Juniors with Sharni, Sarah and Abby

In Inquiry this term, our topic ā€œAnimal Survival Depends on Usā€  has sparked curiosity and deep thinking across the class. We began our immersion by exploring different animals and categorising them, before extending our learning with a visit to Gorge Wildlife Park. This led to rich discussions as students debated whether the animals could survive without human help. A highlight was when Sharni brought in her bearded dragon, Godzilla, which inspired conversations about his basic survival needs. Students then designed and built their own habitats in the forest, reflecting on the importance of shade, safety, food, and water, while recognising that Godzilla would not survive in the wild as he is a pet. Our investigations continued with a focus on owls, where we posed the big question, ā€œWhat if all the trees in the world were chopped down?ā€  Students shared thoughtful responses such as, ā€œWe could not grow fruit which would affect humans and animals,ā€ and ā€œBirds would be left to live on the ground and could be attacked by bigger animals.ā€ As the unit progresses, students will explore real-world, man-made causes and their effects on wildlife as well as proposing a solution or planned action, leading to their final reflections on the statement: ā€œAnimal survival depends on us.ā€ Stay tuned!

Big Night In

Our year 2  & 3 students had a fun time at the Big Night In on Thursday evening in week 5. The Big Night In is an annual event to introduce our current year 2's to the primary space, teachers and students they will be in class with next year. Everyone enjoyed playing games, watching a movie and eating pizza.

News from Laura's Class (P1)

Shout out to the awesome students in Primary 1 who have settled back into learning with Laura and a big thank you to Leigh for taking the class. We have been working diligently to write facts about our adopted animal we have chosen from the Animal Welfare League Website. These will then be used in our planning sessions to turn into persuasive statements, encouraging people to adopt an animal. We are hoping in the next few weeks to have a representative out to share with us what they do and give us some feedback on our writing. Here are some students ideas on our writing topic:

Ethan - we have been choosing which animal we like the most and researching about it to help get it adopted.

Jaiveer - I have chosen Buster (a dog) , a sweet little gentleman who needs to find his forever home and it might be yours!

Violet - we are writing about adopting a pet off AWL and lots of people are enjoying it because lots of us love animals and finding facts about them.

Steve's Class (P2) News

P2 have had a fantastic few weeks full of learning, sharing and fun! In Maths, we have been diving into the world of data and chance. From creating colourful graphs to predicting weather outcomes, the class has been busy collecting information and using it to answer interesting questions. In Literacy, P2 recently completed their class speeches. Everyone worked hard to prepare, practise and present to their peers. The variety of topics was impressive, and the courage shown by students speaking in front of the class was inspiring. It was wonderful to see how supportive the audience was, giving encouragement and celebrating each speaker’s effort. This week we are starting a unit on developing scary narratives. A special highlight this term was welcoming Shaun, who joined us from China for a week. Even though he didn’t speak much English, we quickly discovered that friendship goes beyond words. Shaun joined in games, activities and classroom learning with a big smile, and the class loved having him as part of P2. It has truly been a busy, rewarding time in our classroom, and we are looking forward to even more learning adventures ahead.

PE & Health with Leigh

Over the past few weeks, the students have been hard at work practicing several activities for our upcoming sports day and improving skills in running, jumping and throwing. Our upcoming health lessons will look at health messaging and a variety of safeties such as water safety, road safety and safety in relationships.

Just a reminder that the notice detailing the timetable for next Thursday's Sports Day is on Audiri.

Breaktime Activities

The Resource Pod is now open for one breaktime a day, offering students a variety of activities to participate in or just a safe space to relax and read a book. We will be holding some themed sessions in the near future and welcome any suggestions the students may have.

All books are on loan for two weeks and the due date can be found on a slip attached to the inside back cover of the book or on a book mark. OSHC

What's New at OSHC?

Hi everyone,

OSHC is excited to announce that we will be open for Spring Vacation Care, three days a week! We have a fun-filled program planned and would love for you to join us. Places are still available—please contact me at felixstow.oshc@schools.sa.edu.au for more information or to make a booking.

We are also delighted to welcome a new educator, Sharlin, to our team. Sharlin is currently studying teaching at Charles Darwin University and brings wonderful enthusiasm and fresh ideas to our program.

This term, we have been working on a special OSHC project inspired by the children’s love of Minecraft. Our Minecraft House Building Challenge began with children designing their houses on paper or with Lego before recreating them in the game. Minecraft encourages creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and planning skills, and we are excited to see the children’s designs come to life. We look forward to sharing the finished creations with you soon!

Warmly,

Hannah

Director, Felixstow Primary School OSHC
