Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

This edition of our Newsletter will be the final one for 2023.   A special "Presentation Assembly" edition will be published next week and include some final, last-minute reminders.

Please allow me to take this opportunity to thank all members of our school community for the wonderful support provided throughout the year.  This thanks extents especially to our super supportive School Board and wonderful P&C for all the support we have enjoyed this year.  I look forward to welcoming all members of the community who have supported our school in any way at the 'Thank You Morning Tea" next Thursday.  I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of the entire staff at our school - these people are integral to maintaining the high calibre learning programs we successfully implement and the incredible support provided to children.

Student Reports will be distributed on Monday (December 11) via Connect.  This is a terrific opportunity to celebrate the successes your children have enjoyed at school this year.  Please take the time to read the report with your child, recognising achievements and highlighting those areas identified for further development.  Please also keep in mind, a "C" grade means your child has made sound achievement across the year and met all requirements for the relevant learning area.

Finally, at this time of the year, I take great pleasure in sharing the success of our Year 3 to 5 students challenged by the Literacy Pro strategy.  Essentially, this entails students reading books (assessed to be at an individual’s reading level) and undertaking online quizzes.  For words to be counted in this total, the quiz must be passed, i.e., with a score of 80% obtained.  The last time I checked this week, the total to date for 2023, our students had read well over 37 000 000 words – congratulations to all these children.

Important Information

iPad Unlocked

If you would like your child's iPad unlocked over the school holidays, meaning they can access additional sites and apps, please complete the survey using the following link:

https://forms.office.com/r/AcuWp4my67

If you choose to have your child's iPad unlocked, please note it will be wiped again at the beginning of the school year and school settings reinstated. It will also mean your child may not be able to use a device as soon as school returns due to the volume of iPads that are required to be set up.

If you want school restrictions and apps to remain on the device, you do not need to respond to this survey.

Christmas Concert

Thank you and well done to all of the Band and Choir students who participated in the Christmas Evening at Glengarry PS. Your hard work paid off in a highly successful and entertaining performance, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the school community! I am extremely proud of your efforts - now we will work on the performances at the Yr 6 Graduation and the Presentation Assembly. Parents, please note that Yr 6 parents and parents of award recipients have priority in the audience for these performances in Week 10.

Well done, all!

Critters Up Close

In week 8, the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary classes enjoyed a very exciting incursion from Critters Up Close. This incursion consolidated lots of our learning from across the year.

They we able to listen observe,  and sometimes touch or hold a range of creatures that live in trees, on the ground, under the ground and in sea water. We will continue to be "Nature Warriors", to look after the land and seas to protect the homes for these creatures.  Did you know that a Tawny Frog Mouth is not an Owl... it belongs to the Tawny Frog Mouth group of nocturnal birds.  Our favourite creatures to touch and hold were the Stimpson and Olive pythons.

Glengarry Running Club

Glengarry's Running Club has come to an end for 2023.

We ended with music, muffins and a few races this morning.

Thanks for all those that have attended this year.

Pre-Primary Christmas Party

On Wednesday 6th December Pre-Primary Blue and Red came together to celebrate a fantastic year of learning. The families enjoyed a picnic in our playground area underneath the shade sails and the children sang a few Christmas songs and a ‘Graduation’ song showing how ready they are for Year One! Families then had the opportunity to look through the classrooms at the fabulous work on display and share the children’s workbooks from the year with them. Thank you to all the families who came along and supported this event.

Water in Indigenous Culture

On Thursday the 30th of November, Jon from the Water Corporation came to visit our school. He came to talk to us about water in Indigenous Culture. Jon is a Noongar man; he can speak fluent Noongar language. He spoke to us using Noongar language and played us his digeridoo.

Jon showed us a traditional water storage method using a kangaroo skin backpack and explained why water is important to make Kylies (boomerangs). Jon uses boomerangs as part of his dance performances all over the world! He showed us how to make music and dance with them.

Jon explained the importance of animal totems in Indigenous Culture in helping people to act sustainability and care for the land. We learned about Indigenous paintings which were made by mixing water with Ochre to make paint. We used some symbols to make and tell our own stories.

At the end of the lesson, we had a very fun game of musical bobs to the music of the digeridoo.

  • Looking after plants in the greenhouse and bushland.
  • feeding the worms by emptying the bins each week.

It is likely to be a long, hot summer so if you think you may be able to pop in and water or look after the worms, please get in touch.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

REST = compassion for your self

With the school value of compassion being emphasized currently, I thought I'd throw a curly thought at you!  Sometimes we are good at showing compassion to others but forget to show it towards ourselves.  A wise person once said that you cannot love someone else until you learn to love yourself.  For those of you out there who are always helping others and putting yourself last, I give you permission to REST.  I'm talking to myself here as well.  It is very easy to load our plate with just one more act of kindness, or event, or even a Chistmas party.  However, we can also be so busy that we don't have time to rest up.  Recently I heard someone say 'Take time to sharpen the axe.'  That has stuck with me since and I'm trying to apply it.  This Christmas time is a perfect opportunity to say 'No' to the superfluous activities and 'Yes' to rest.  If you feel guilty resting, then you probably need to practice resting more often.  I've included a restful photo of some students doing 'Art in the Park' recently.  Enjoy your Christmas and holidays rest.  See you next year!
