Term 3 Weeks 3 & 4: 31st July - 11th August 2023

Principal's Blog

Welcome to Week 4

Welcome to Week 4 Term 3 Caves Beach Public School for 2023!

Education Week

Education Week is an annual celebration of NSW public education and the achievements of our schools, teachers and students. Education Week was held from 31st July to 4th August and celebrated 175 years of public education in NSW.

This year CBPS will celebrate Education Week in Week 6 of Term 3 with the combination of Book Week and our School Art Show.

Although no official Education week activities were held at school last week our students were involved in many educationally focused activities. These included Zone Athletics Carnival, Galgabba Public Speaking Zoom connection with PSSB Chennai School India and Dr Stuart Blanch from WWF Australia, Art Club, Science experiments and more.  Some photos from these activities are included later in the newsletter.

Signage

Over the last 12 months we have been adding to our signage across the school to improve the aesthetics. The most recent addition is to Block C, our double storey building. Our school values have been placed along the plain concrete façade which is a bright way to help remind our students of our important school values.

COVID ILSP Programs

The NSW Department of Education has provided school with additional funding to help ensure no student is impacted by the educational restriction of COVID. These funds support literacy and numeracy small group tuition program (COVID ILSP) for students who need it most across NSW primary, secondary and specialist schools. Small group tuition involves supplementary teaching and learning support for groups of 2-5 students. Students are taught consistently for a predetermined amount of time with the intention to reinforce classroom instruction.

Tomorrow the department’s COVID ILSP fieldwork team will be visiting our school to interview students, staff and parents and gather information from our Learning and Support team around the implementation of this program at our school.

Major Works

Last week the roof to Block D was replaced. This is the roof of 1H, 2R and the connecting office areas. This week Block A, K/1P and the Science room will have new floor coverings and cabinetry installed. The senior toilets will also be closed while these areas will be painted. Next week, Week 5 our canteen will be closed for the week as this area will be painted.

Healthy Lunch box Choices.

Our K-2 staff have asked to remind parents to make healthy choices when filling student lunch boxes. Lollies and unhealthy snacks can be detrimental to students’ ability to maintain concentration to complete classroom tasks and do not provide kids with the fuel needed to get them through the day.

Education Week

Please enjoy some of the activities that students participated in during Education Week.

2023 EXCHANGE

Self-reflections from Senior Environment Group who attended an online meeting with PSBB Chennai, India and Dr Stuart Blanch, conservation scientist (WWF Australia).

We enjoyed the 2023 EXCHANGE program. It gave us a chance to explore different facts and features of Olive Ridley Turtles, koalas and White Seahorses. We found it interesting how Dr Blanch got involved as a conservation scientist. He was very honest and open about his experiences and perspectives on the environment and how to look after it. The take home message for us was ‘you can make a difference no matter how old you are’.

Thank you PSBB and Dr Blanch for being a part of this year’s amazing EXCHANGE. We hope our school can continue this inspirational program and partnership in future.

We celebrated our learning experiences with a scrumptious feast of Indian food and Australian dessert.  Thank you to Uditi's mum for the yummy rotis and Mrs Chensee for our dhal and aloo gobi.

Science

Stage 2 have been investigating the differences between solids and liquids. They had a great time experimenting with custard power, cornflour and water.

Art Club

Art Club has been busy painting pictures of beautiful birds for the upcoming art show.

Debating

Caves Beach Sharks

Introducing our Caves Beach Sharks! This talented group of students have been participating in the Premier's Debating Challenge, competing against schools on the Central Coast.

The students have learnt to plan their arguments within a short timeframe as one hour before the debate begins, the team finds out the topic and which side of the debate they are on. After every debate, the students reflected on the feedback from the adjudicator and focused on honing their skills. We had two very close debates in the early part and then two consecutive wins. We couldn't be prouder of their determination, teamwork and positive attitudes. Well done Sharks!

100 Days of Kindy

Our beautiful Kindergarten children celebrated 100 days of Kindy last Thursday. They dressed up in bright clothes and engaged in plenty of special activities. Well done Kindy!

Grow Your Mind

In life we can be faced with challenges such as friendship fights, making mistakes, setbacks and sadness. It is important to remember to be RESILIENT and use our strengths and focus on them to help us  be the best of who we are so we can stay focused, achieve our goals and flourish.

Show REILENCE by knowing your strength and growing it, start today!

  •  do the things you love
  • give new things a go and try your best
  • if you have a shark thought that bites you bite back
  • tell yourself your strength and believe in it

Learning and Support

Tip 2 - Eating for a Healthy Mind

Making healthy school lunches and snacks saves money and boost your child’s health and well-being. Most convenience foods are highly processed with high-fat, high-sodium and high-sugar content.

Did you know about ABC of lunchboxes?

A is for just right amount of food and water so that waste is minimised.

B is for balance of dairy, fruit, vegetables and whole grain foods

C is for core foods that provide energy, vitamins and fibre.

Discover how to add variety to your child’s lunchbox.

Quick Easy mini pizzas

Pita or Lebanese bread

Leftover roasted pumpkin or mushroom slices, or capsicums

Some fetta cheese with a couple slices of ham or salami

Basil or baby spinach leaves

Homemade or bought dip

1.            Spread dip on bread base and top with cheese and vegetables of your choice.

2.            Place on baking tray. Bake for 10 mins at 190 degrees Celsius.

Schools Tree Day

On Friday, Caves Beach Public participated in Schools Tree Day. Student representatives from each class had the opportunity to plant native plants provided by Landcare. Students from the Support Unit classes and Stage 3 planted in the new sensory garden. Kinder, Stage 1 and Stage 2 planted in the Aboriginal garden near the cola and in the raised beds in the quiet area. Thanks to the students who participated - we planted over 20 native plants and helped contribute to a healthy environment at our school!
