Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Gregory Neville

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr Kevin Collins

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Mrs Laien and the assistant teachers are busy preparing students for their track and field sports carnival at the end of the term. The twilight track events will be held at 4pm on Wednesday, 21st June, followed by a sausage sizzle. All parents, friends and wantoks are encouraged to attend and support their child/children's house.

Thanks to Mrs Patricia Yip who has taken on the task of leading the school’s 2023 School Production. We look forward to the production night! See the flyer below.

The year is moving ahead quickly and it will not be too long before year 8 and year 10 National Exams are upon us. LIS teachers have a comprehensive program to well prepare students in place, including afterschool and weekend remedial studies. Attendance is very important leading up to the exams. If you would like to understand the preparation or would like more info on how the exams are facilitated at LIS, please see our exam coordinator, Ms Patricia  Yip.

It has become evident that some students are slack in their care of school issued text books. Please note that these text books are very expensive and parents will be charged replacement costs for damaged books.

Mr Greg Neville

In his recent visit to Kavieng, Mr Neville visited our Lihirian scholarship students at OLSH.

Thank you to Ms Saua and the Year 1/2 class on their HASS assembly about the differences in family roles in the past compared to the present.

2023 LIS WHOLE SCHOOL MUSICAL PRODUCTION!

This year, at the end of term 2, LIS will be staging a whole school dance and drama musical production titled – ‘Travel into Space on Apollo 23’. This production will involve all classes, Prep to Year 10, as well as the LIS/STM staff. It is a musical drama about the Solar System that not only involves dance and drama but planning and preparation as well.  Apart from it being fun and entertaining, being part of a production is an activity that boosts students’ confidence. This will be a great experience for our LIS students.

Thanks to Ms Patricia Yip for being our production director.

Student-led Conferences gives students the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and carers. This is not a parent-teacher interview and there are no set times; however, a student-led conference should take about 15 minutes. Siblings will be supervised in the library when you are attending your child's conference.

High School will hold a High School Open Day/Evening next term.

Friday assemblies

A reminder to parents (especially our new parents) that you are very welcome to attend our school assembly each Friday morning, commencing at 8.10am at the basketball court. Each Friday there is a short class presentation. This week it was the year 3 assembly and next week will be the year 4 class.

Kind regards,

Ms Cathy Langusch

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

Next week, we will welcome our next Work Ready Program cohort. This group are commencing their electrical apprenticeships with Newcrest and will undertake a shortened Work Ready Program for the next 5 weeks at the School to Mine Campus.

Our STMC staff are continuing to assist former Work Ready Program trainees to apply for a range of positions both with Newcrest and other stakeholders including apprenticeships. They are also continuing to support our BEd Teachers to compete all of the required assessment in our STMC Computer Lab over weekends and after school.

Our FODE students are continuing their studies and making good progress.

We have begun working with Callan Services to confirm our Certificate Delivery for Teachers across Lihir and look forward to presenting these details with the Local Education Office in the near future.

We are continuing to finalise details with IT staff in Australia to get our School to Mine Student Database up and running, this database will be integral in sharing information with HR regarding the local talent available from our previous programs, when recruiting for future employment opportunities.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins
